Healing burn victim Engel poised to join hockey partner in Czech Republic
Less than four months after the accidental fire that nearly killed her, Hana Engel is piecing her life back together.
A positive attitude has taken Engel places, including to a state of mind she didn’t think she could have this soon, and now it is about to accompany her overseas.
On Labour Day, Engel’s partner, Jake Cardwell, whose quick actions saved Engel’s life, is flying to the Czech Republic to resume his pro hockey career with HC Dynamo Pardubice.

Man electrocuted, but fast action by co-workers saves him
A man’s heart is beating again because his co-workers knew what to do in an emergency.
Ottawa paramedics say the man, in his 50s, was electrocuted while he was working on underground fuel pumping equipment on Cyrville Road, north of Innes Road.
He went into cardiac arrest, but his co-workers managed to turn off the current and bring him up to the surface. They immediately started doing CPR until firefighters arrived, and paramedics arrived two minutes later to do defibrillation.

Developer takes patient stance after $400-million condo project gets spiked
Brigil Construction’s plans for a $400-million highrise complex across the street from the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau was dealt a seemingly fatal blow, but a Brigil spokesman on Wednesday said the company is a very patient one, seeming to hint that it may simply wait for more favourable political winds before developing land on rue Laurier.
“We’re sad,” said Yves Ducharme, special adviser to Brigil president Gilles Desjardins, regarding Gatineau city council&r -
Reevely: Ontario students' math scores keep slipping but new government is changing little
Ontario’s elementary students still aren’t as good at math as we’d like them to be, according to fresh data from the province’s testing agency, though the most worrying new information is about literacy among some higher-risk students.
Only 39 per cent of Grade 10 students in the applied high-school stream (as opposed to the more challenging academic one) met the provincial standard for literacy in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s tests last school -

What happened at Ottawa city council: 'Gateway' speed limit signs get green light
Council approves neighbourhood ‘gateway’ speed limit signs
Blanket speed limits of 30 or 40 km/h may be coming soon to some neighbourhoods now that council has signed off on a new policy for speed limit signs at community entry points.
Council on Wednesday approved a plan to have “gateway” speed limit signs now that the province allows municipalities to create speed limits lower than 50 km/h and post the speed limits at entry and exit points of neighbourhoods.

Frontenac paramedics, responding to a call, greeted by man with a knife
Kingston police arrested a man on Tuesday after he allegedly pulled a knife on two paramedics while they were responding to a call.
According to police, the 51-year-old man was holding a knife while he approached two Frontenac paramedics in the hallway of an apartment building while they were responding to a call around 9 p.m. in Kingston’s west end. The paramedics fled the building and, when police showed up, they arrested the man on the second floor and found the switchblade he had used. -
'His face was covered in blood': Dog killed after attacking two men
Staring at a pit bull that had just mauled two men, Marcel Lamoureux decided to try and calm the animal down — using some banter and some roast beef.
It was Tuesday evening. Lamoureux had heard yelling across the road from his home on Highway 148 just west of Aylmer and at first thought it was a loud argument. Then he figured it might be a fire, and went to check.
He found two badly injured men and the dog, described by police as a “pitbull type,” standing defiantly betwee -
Mayor directs city officials to plan ahead for pot shops
Mayor Jim Watson directed city officials on Wednesday to compile as much information as they can on the province’s new pot store scheme in hopes of providing the next council with the crucial answers it will need to make decisions on cannabis stores, including where in the city they’d be allowed to operate.
The marijuana file is moving at a smoking-fast pace for Ontario municipalities — it becomes legal in Canada on Oct. 17 and, in this province, privately-run shops will be all -

Have you seen this woman, wanted by Napanee OPP
The Ontario Provincial Police in Napanee are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman who allegedly bought things with a stolen credit card.

Glavin: Britain's Labour Party rotting under Jeremy Corbyn
If it’s hard to get your head around just how far the rot has spread in the three years since Jeremy Corbyn won the leadership of Britain’s Labour Party, this should give you an idea.
In just the past week, Corbyn has been complimented by David Duke, a former grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, applauded by Nick Griffin, the former leader of the neo-fascist British National Party, and condemned by ranking Labour MP Mike Gapes, former chair of the Commons foreign affairs committee. -
Greenbelt farm may become sound stage for film and TV
The last farm scientists were laid off 20 years ago and their equipment sold at auction. Now artists may move into a former Agriculture Canada lab in the Greenbelt to build a “creative hub.”

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for capital region
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the capital region.
Environment Canada says the storms may develop near noon or early this afternoon and rapidly intensify.

Quinte West man dies of injuries sustained in fire
A 24-year-old man has died after being injured in a Trenton fire last week.
Quinte West OPP said on Wednesday that Raven Dagnall died Sunday in hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the fire Aug. 23.

Dog killed after attacking and injuring two men
Police in Quebec had to shoot and kill a dog in Pontiac on Tuesday night after it attacked its 40-year-old owner and a 69-year-old member of his family.
MRC des Collines police said in a release they were called to the man’s property, about 40 kilometres west of Ottawa, at around 8:30 p.m.

One more day of muggy, rainy discomfort before sunny, cooler weekend
Capital residents should only have to endure one more muggy, rainy day before things take a turn for the much better, the weather office says.
Wednesday is forecast to see another humid, rainy afternoon — there is a chance of thunderstorms and rain this afternoon, along with a high of 29 C that will feel hotter than that, with a humidex of 38.
The outlook is for the heat to break tonight, though, following the rain, and the weather is hopefully going to continue to improve after that.

Denley: Teachers must do the job they are directed to do
Ontario teachers’ unions and the provincial government are at war, again. That’s something we have seen far too often over the past 20-plus years.
This time, the fight is ostensibly over the elementary school sex-education curriculum. Teachers’ union leaders are outraged over the temporary reversion to a curriculum last taught in 2014. They are doubly outraged by Premier Doug Ford’s announcement that parents can complain by phone to the Ontario College of Teachers if teac -
'We know the problem exists': Ottawa Food Bank grapples with accessibility issue in east end
When Sara Woodill went to the food bank for the first time, this past April, she assumed it would be an easy enough experience. The food bank at the Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre is a 20-minute walk her Des Forets Avenue home. She said if she strolls to the end of her street, she can almost see the food bank itself.
Instead, Woodill — a 27-year-old multimedia artist who had to drop out of Algonquin College’s game design program for financial reasons — was -
Today's letters: Is it time for a national capital district?
Time for national capital district
Re: Hull tower project’s fate hinges on heritage vote (Aug 27).
Declaring the area near the Canadian Museum of History a heritage district is a smart move, which will discourage turning the area into a future developer’s ghetto. An important museum like the Canadian Museum of History shouldn’t have to be over shadowed. It’s probably time to declare Western Quebec and Ottawa a national capital district, akin to Washington, D.C., so t -
Cohen: Sen. John McCain stood out by standing up to Trump
In 1956, John F. Kennedy published a study of character in the United States Senate. Reviewing the giants of the institution, he celebrated eight who put the country’s interest over their own, for whom principle mattered more than politics.
Profiles in Courage won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1957. When he ran for the presidency in 1960, the book gave Kennedy the intellectual heft to silence critics who said he was too young and too inexperienced for the office.
To JFK, courage was -

Gatineau council votes down $400M development with heritage designation for Museum District
In front of a room packed to the brim with members of the public, Gatineau city council passed a heritage designation for the city’s downtown Museum District late Tuesday night and in so doing blocked the development of controversial highrise complex proposed for the area.
The 12-7 vote concluded months of uncertainty regarding the future of a historical neighbourhood near the Canadian Museum of History between Laurier and Victoria streets and Maisonneuve and Des Allumettiè -
