Elgin Street reconstruction will mean burying hydro lines, city decides
Elgin Street won’t be cluttered with hydro poles after it’s rebuilt between now and 2020, the city says, because the wires they hold will be buried instead.
Buried hydro wires make for a cleaner streetscape, but they’re also much more expensive than wires run overhead from pole to pole. As a rule, the city won’t pay the premium even when a street is being completely rebuilt.

The younger visitor’s effect on the senior was powerful. “She was happy, she was smiling, she remembered we were there visiting,” Turner said, s -
They showed her the money: Victim flips tables on bad door-to-door sale
Carol Baas never thought she’d see a red cent, but there it was, via courier: a $750 cheque awarded after a small claims court victory over a door-to-door sales company.
Baas, 57, a retired public servant, was upset at herself for signing up for a water softener she didn’t need, at $59 a month for 10 years, after a door-knock pitch in February 2017 from Ontario Safety Standards, based in Toronto.
Only 41 days later, even before her first bill arrived, Baas discovered a lien had been -

Risk of thunderstorms today, tonight and tomorrow but there's some good news by the end of week
There’s a decent amount of sun in the forecast heading into what is, unofficially at least, the last week and weekend of summer — but not before a threat of thunderstorms early in the week.

EARLY EDITON: Winging it with the editor in chief
Take a step behind the scenes as we highlight some memorable coverage from the Ottawa Citizen’s storied past. Today, former TV critic Tony Atherton recalls a sartorial run-in with one of the newspaper’s most colourful editors in chief.

I owe a large chunk of my career as a journalist — and my most embarrassing moment along that path — to Captain Canada.

Fate of museum district, Brigil tower development hang in the balance before Gatineau council vote
While Gatineau city council is officially voting on a heritage designation for its downtown Museum District on Tuesday, it’s also a referendum of sorts on the future of developer Brigil’s most controversial project to date.
If council decides to pass a bylaw designating the area near the Canadian Museum of History a heritage district, there’s essentially no way the $400-million, 35- and 55-storey mixed-use Place des Peuples development could go ahead in the neighbourhood, -

10 months later, GG still not living at Rideau Hall
Does Canada even need official residences for its leading dignitaries?
We’re today cornered with the question. Since taking office in 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have not occupied 24 Sussex Drive, home to drafts and mice and cobwebbed plans, for a single day. With (low) renovation estimates in the $10-million range, it is unclear whether a prime minister will ever lay his head on a pillow there again.
As for Rideau Hall, the office of Gov. Gen. Julie Payette confirme -

Pleasant Park parents angry city won't fund crossing guard at busy intersection
With the school year rapidly approaching, a group of parents and neighbours at Pleasant Park Public School are lobbying for an adult crossing guard at a busy intersection they say is too dangerous for kids.
And though the city agrees that a guard is warranted at the corner of Pleasant Park and Delmar Drive, the group is out of luck. There’s no money for a guard at their corner.
“I’ve seen such close calls,” said Francine Beaupré, a retiree who’s been asked by
