Police arrested three people in the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville this week after officers stopped a stolen U-Haul truck.
On Aug. 21, Leeds OPP received a report of a rented U-Haul truck that had not been returned to the business owner in Elizabethtown-Kitley Township. Two days, later while on patrol, an officer stopped the stolen vehicle on Lake Street, and arrested and charged three people.

Antiques: Thrift store auction yields fine cameo glass bowl
Q: I recently acquired this piece at a thrift store auction for $75. It is a large fruit bowl, 12.7 cm tall (5 inches) with a diameter of 33.5 cm (13.25 inches). It has a floral pattern of carved glass overlay over frosted glass— possibly called Cameo Art Glass. It has no markings that I can find. I would be interested to find out when it was made, by whom and what value it may have. It is a very beautiful bowl. Thank you.
Trish, Kitchener

Departure of uOttawa's Saudi medical trainees delayed
Ottawa hospitals have been given a bit of breathing room as they tackle the problem of departing Saudi doctors.
The deadline for Saudi students to leave Canada — including 67 physicians training with the University of Ottawa Medical School — has been extended until Sept. 22. Originally, the Saudis had been ordered to leave the country by Aug. 31 as part of the kingdom’s angry response to a tweet from Global Affairs that criticized the Saudis’ human rights record.

Watson surrounds himself with Alfredsson, other athletes for campaign sign-hammering
Jim Watson on Thursday surrounded himself with athletes during a ceremonial sign-hammering event, including Daniel Alfredsson, who has made at least two campaign appearances for the mayoral incumbent this year.
They were at the Island Park Drive home of philanthropist Dave Smith to install Watson’s first lawn sign, although the sign was already hammered in for the photo opportunity and Watson’s signs were seen on the lawns of other nearby homes.

SPCA of Western Quebec in 'temporary' digs after devastating fire
An Aylmer animal shelter has moved around the corner from its former home which was destroyed in a fire that killed more than 70 animals last month.
Carole Wright of the SPCA of Western Quebec confirmed via e-mail Thursday that the organization was in the process of setting up at 1658 Pink Rd. as a “temporary” shelter. She gave no further details.
The shelter on Auguste Mondoux Street was destroyed in the July 2 blaze. Firefighters were able to save six dogs who were in the care of t -
Neighbours rejoice at arrests in east-end drug bust: Police
Residents of an east-end apartment building were so grateful to police for tackling drug-dealing at a “problem address” that one left a thank you note on a detective’s car, police said Thursday.
“Numerous” neighbours approached police to thank them after five men were arrested in the bust on Lafontaine Avenue, south of Montreal Road, on Wednesday. A substance police believe is the deadly opiate fentanyl was seized and is still being tested.

Watson: City needs to get ready for Ontario's private pot stores
The city needs to begin consultations on the new province’s new pot store scheme this fall to prepare the next council for decisions on the future of cannabis retail in Ottawa, Mayor Jim Watson said Thursday.

Bruce: Help retirement homes keep their clients out of hospital
Retirement homes are the equivalent of “dark matter” for the health care system. Although these homes are not recognized as health care institutions by Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, data obtained from one large acute-care hospital shows that retirement home residents could occupy 10 per cent of all hospital beds at a given time. That’s enormous in terms of impact and dollars – about $ 2 billion a year for Ontario.

Adam: Why Bruce McConville thinks he can be Ottawa's next mayor
Bruce McConville has lost two consecutive municipal races in Vanier, and you’d think a man who couldn’t win a race for city council after two tries would have no business running for mayor, especially against an incumbent as formidable as Jim Watson. Some might even go so far as to wonder why McConville, a Vanier garage owner, is even qualified to be mayor of the $3-billion corporation that is the city of Ottawa. The bigger question then is: If Vanier residents didn’t vote for -
