Local grannies gear up for 260-km ride to help AIDS victims in Africa
Most of them are in their 70s now, having earned the right to sit back and watch the world go by.
So, why is it that the Grassroot Grannies continue to take up their cause with a high-spirited trek on two wheels?
The answer is simple. Grandmothers from Ottawa-Gatineau, in concert with others in Canada, the US, Australia and UK, are inspired and motivated by grandmothers in Africa who raise their grandchildren – feed and educate them – when those children lose parents to AIDS-related -

Goat found by Ottawa bylaw officer was in ambitious bid for freedom
A goat that has escaped from its owner in Ottawa has been picked up by bylaw officers — again.
The as-yet-nameless goat (he’s a male, so Billy seems the obvious, if cliché, choice) was picked up near Kinburn on Monday night. The bylaw office tweeted on Tuesday that they believed the goat had chewed through his rope and, with the courage of a lion, seized the opportunity for a taste of freedom.
You have goat to be kidding us!

We caught up with her from Kinshasa, the capital city of Congo, to talk about her journey from growing up in Canada to building a fashion industry in a country that has experienced great challenges in recent decades.

Cohen: How Trump turned Philip Roth into a prophet
On Oct. 5, 2004, a month before President George W. Bush was re-elected, Philip Roth published The Plot Against America. On the brown cover was a terrifying image: a one-cent U.S. postage stamp of majestic Yosemite postmarked with a swastika.
The novel was a sensation. Frank Rich, the literary critic, suggested then that the cover and the story – an alternative history placing Charles Lindberg at the head of isolationist, autocratic, pro-Nazi, anti-Semitic administration – hit a nerv -

Denley: Amazon's fine, but we can't build a thriving economy on it
When it comes to foreign-owned megacorps, this is a very friendly town. Build a big warehouse that will employ 600 people at a wage 40 cents an hour over the minimum, and you get the prime minister, a flock of MPs, various provincial cabinet ministers, and sundry city councillors to come out and cheer you on.
That was the reception we gave Amazon Monday at a sod-turning for its east-end warehouse. A good news announcement always draws politicians like flies, and this is a good news announcement, -

From the archives: Boyne Johnston recalls days long ago when he stole $260Gs, drank with coppers who caught him
Originally published on October 11, 2013
In 1958, Boyne Johnston was the most famous bank robber in town, maybe in the country, our own scaled-down Dillinger.
People were taken by his daring – the dapper chief teller, only 25, who slipped out the bank’s back door with $260,000 cash stuffed in a bag, the quick getaway across the U.S. border, the trail of booze and nightclubs and sports cars.
It was 55 years ago this month. But amazing stories never get old.
He ought to be dead really, -

Albert Speer, Adolf Hitler’s minister of armaments, was asked on his release from prison in 1966 what lessons he drew from the Second World War and the related deaths of an estimated 50 million people. He replied that the catastrophe was primarily the result of Germans losing their independent press during the 1930s.
Abraham Lincoln, meanwhile, believed so strongly in newspapers and their role in public debate that he owned one in Illinois the year he was elected president in 1860.
