Health unit reports possible contaminated cannabis in Renfrew area
PEMBROKE — Renfrew County and District Health Unit has received reports of unexpected seizures among cannabis users in the Renfrew area.
The public is being warned that there might be contaminated cannabis (cannabis mixed with other chemicals or street drugs) circulating in this area.
The health unit said recreational cannabis use remains illegal and that cannabis use has health risks best avoided by abstaining.
For more information, http://www.rcdhu.com or call the Renfrew County and Dist -
Ontario boosts crosswalk fines just in time for back-to-school season
Provincial penalties for drivers who disobey the law pertaining to crosswalks and pedestrian crossovers will double on Sept. 1, just before many students head back to school.
The fines can be levied if a driver fails to stop at a crosswalk, or obstructs a crosswalk by stopping inside its boundaries.
Those actions could also lead to a charge of careless driving, especially if they cause bodily harm or death to a pedestrian. Fines for careless driving will increase from a maximum of $2,000 to -
After six months on machine, Newfoundland fisherman has heart transplant
A Newfoundland fisherman being kept alive since February by a heart-assist device underwent a successful organ transplant over the weekend.
The family of Jimmy Sullivan, 61, say he’s recovering well after the eight-hour operation Sunday.
“He’s doing wonderful,” said his wife, Michelle, 61, noting he was already sitting up in a chair Monday afternoon and breathing on his own.
The couple had been living on the grounds of the Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital while he was -
Several priests accused of sexual abuse in US received treatment in Canada
Several priests accused in an American grand jury report of preying on children for years were treated or assessed at a facility north of Toronto that specializes in services for members of the clergy, the recently released document reveals.
The report, which said it found more than 1,000 children were molested or raped by more than 300 “predator priests” in six Pennsylvania Roman Catholic dioceses since the 1940s, also indicated a few allegedly committed assaults while on trips to C -

Amazon breaks ground on massive east-end warehouse
It was a day for superlatives as a who’s who of local, provincial and federal politicians gathered alongside Amazon officials to break ground in Carlsbad Springs for the online retail giant’s first Ottawa-area warehouse on Monday.
Huge. Biggest. Great.
The warehouse, at a touch over a million square feet, will be the largest industrial building in the region. It will be the size of 60 NHL hockey rinks. If you were to fill the behemoth with maple syrup, there would be about 30 litres -

Higher than average catfish deaths reported in Ottawa River
More dead catfish than usual are washing up on the banks of the Ottawa River east of the city, prompting the Ottawa Riverkeepers to monitor what it believes is higher bacteria levels in some parts of the river.
Reports have been coming in to the Ottawa Riverkeeper from around Hawkesbury, 110 kilometres east of Ottawa, that there have been more dead fish than in an average year. Mike Gasher, whose house backs on to the river near Hawkesbury, said that he returned home after some time away and fou -

MacDougall: After the 'good' and the 'good enough', time for Liberals to tackle the 'ugly'
Welcome to the next phase of next year’s federal election.
Having shuffled the ministerial deck, Justin Trudeau will now meet with his revamped Cabinet in British Columbia to decide which cards to play in the run-up to the October 2019 vote.
The deliberations will be 100 per cent political, namely: what do the Liberals feel they have to nail down to ensure the best possible shot at re-election? Put differently, are there enough ticks next to their 2015 promise boxes to see off the com -
Raft crashed through roof of Florida house – investigation can’t determine why raft broke free from RCAF helicopter
Investigators haven’t been able to determine why a raft broke free from a Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter earlier this year, smashing through the roof of a Miami-area house and injuring a woman inside.
The raft had been secured on the seat of a Griffon helicopter when it tumbled out of the aircraft on Feb. 28 and fell a little more than 160 metres, noted the investigation produced by the Department of National Defence’s Airworthiness Investigative Authority. The report was releas -

Penton: ByWard Market study – Stop the funding double standard
The latest survey on the ByWard Market was announced Aug. 1. This one, run by the city’s planning, infrastructure and economic development department, seeks the greater public’s opinion on ByWard’s “public realm.” No, the city does not want your feedback on a Game of Thrones Day on George Street. The “public realm” refers to every inch you can touch without going into a private property. Sidewalks, planters, roads, public washrooms.

Enjoy a sunny Monday – rain and thunderstorms are on the horizon
Enjoy another warm and mostly sunny summer day before we’re back to showers and thunderstorms Tuesday.
