Law enforcement 'Hoopstars' take on hard-core recreational ballers
Some of the city’s top basketball playing police officers have picked up the ball to sustain the annual cops versus recreational ballers challenge at downtown St. Luke’s Park.
While it is the first year for the event under the “Hoopstar Classic” banner, the competition had been been a fixture among Ottawa’s downtown community for more than a decade.
In the past, the event was known as the Naqvi Cup tournament and community barbecue and was sponsored by former O -

'MS Bike' simulates debilitating effect of multiple sclerosis
It looks like any other road bike, but there’s nothing normal about this gleaming red and white two-wheeler.
Why does your foot keep slipping off the pedal? What’s that wobble in the wheel? Are those ball bearings digging into your palm?
It takes just a few minutes aboard it to know what it’s like to feel betrayed by a machine you think you can trust. It’s called “This Bike Has MS” and its designers have deliberately loosened bearings, misaligned the seat, buc -
Boswell: Sir John A. statue debate shows history isn't carved in stone
There’s been a lot of polarizing talk in reaction to Victoria city council’s recent decision to remove a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald from the high-profile place it has commanded in front of city hall since 1982.
The sculptor himself, Montreal artist John Dann, has remarked with regret that “everyone has dug in their heels and taken a position and vilified the so-called opposition.”
But there’s a middle ground on this controversial issue that remains largely unoc -
Today's letters: Heron Gate, doctor shortages, the Far East campaign
Other ways to handle housing needs
Re: Battle lines drawn in Heron Gate, where an evicted community doesn’t plan on leaving, Aug. 15.
Given the increasingly expensive Ottawa rental market, I am saddened by the dilemma faced by Heron Gate residents who are being displaced to allow redevelopment. The situation points to the larger issue of the conflict between private and public interests and the need for government to intervene when a public good is at stake.
Housing poorer families is one -
Editorial: Give landlord some credit for helping Heron Gate
To listen to some people, the eviction of 105 families from Ottawa’s Heron Gate development is a simple tale of a greedy corporate landlord victimizing low-income tenants, most of whom are visible minorities. Indeed, Leilani Farha, an Ottawa resident and UN special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, has accused landlord Timbercreek of “unscrupulous demographic engineering in search of profits: replacing poor and vulnerable people with those who possess greater purchasing po -
Gardella: A coming-out journey of self-awareness and success
I had a rough childhood. I was raised by a single mother who brought me to Canada when she was 24 and I was one-and-a-half. Growing up, I battled with mental health issues, culminating in an attempted suicide. In the back of my head, I felt different. I wasn’t like other kids.
I tried to run away from my feelings to university, but they followed me. I was angry, and I failed my courses and had to drop out.
Things only changed when I found a community of peers that had experienced the same -

Egan: Will pot shops wreck the vibe of small-town Ontario?
Pot shops are coming to small-town Ontario, where the pace is slower and the pie is better. But don’t expect a parade.
A number of Ottawa Valley mayors said Friday they’d like a good deal more information before taking a position on whether their municipalities should opt in or out of Ontario’s new marijuana sales system, to be run by private retailers.
