Loss of Saudi residents a 'staggering' problem for Canadian hospitals, doctor warns
It will take a “Herculean” effort from Canadian hospitals to fill the void left when Saudi medical trainees leave, says the chairman of the University of Ottawa’s department of radiology.
Last week, Saudi Arabia ordered all Saudis studying medicine in Canada home — roughly 1,000 in total — in its angry response to a tweet from Global Affairs Canada that criticized the arrest and imprisonment of human rights activists in the kingdom. The trainees were ordered home by -

Senator says judges are in best position to decide sentences
A Liberal-appointed Senator who has introduced a bill to water down the impact of mandatory minimum sentences says judges are in the best position to deliver penalties tailored to the individual criminal.
“I am pleased to see that judges are challenging the application of mandatory minimum penalties,” Sen. Kim Pate said Wednesday after learning that an Ottawa judge has become the latest member of the judiciary to strike down as unconstitutional two mandatory minimum sentences.

Ottawa judge strikes down two mandatory minimum sentences for 'nice' pimp
An Ottawa judge has ruled that mandatory minimum sentences for two sex offences should not apply in the case of a naïve and unsophisticated pimp who unwittingly recruited and photographed two underage prostitutes.
Justice Colin McKinnon said the minimum penalty demanded by law — a combined three-year prison term — would amount to cruel and unusual punishment for Steevenson Joseph, a 24-year-old first-time offender.
Since Joseph does not deserve any jail time, the judge said, &ld -
The tragic tale of the goddess Dagain and her lover, a goose
They just don’t make goddesses the way they used to, and certainly not Canadian ones, but there’s one in Ottawa who celebrated her 18th birthday on Aug. 7 this year. Her name is Dagain, and she and her lover — a Canada goose — have been flying over the ByWard Market since 2000.
In practical terms, the pair comprise a bronze 4.3-metre weathervane atop the broadcast tower of the Bell Media building. The figures were made by sculptor Bruce Garner and his wife, Tamaya. B -
Students warned about fraudsters offering fake rentals
The Competition Bureau of Canada is warning post-secondary students about the increasing popularity of fraudulent rental scams, just as many are preparing to head back-to-school.
The bureau notes fraudsters use social media or online classified platforms like Kijiji to post an attractive listing in a sought=after area. The listings often boast about the unit’s great amenities and usually have a low rental price, aimed at drawing attention.

Safe injection sites are needed, but aren't enough on their own: Dr. Jeff Turnbull
Supervised injection sites save lives, but they can’t fight the overdose crisis on their own. That is among the advice Ottawa’s Dr. Jeff Turnbull plans to give Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott when he meets with her in coming weeks as part of the province’s closely watched review of supervised injection sites.
The Progressive Conservative government has halted approval of new supervised sites while it conducts the review. Premier Doug Ford said on the campaign trail th -
City tries to connect missing cycling links around Parliamentary Precinct
One of the glaring missing links in downtown cycling infrastructure is under review by the city as it tries to connect a segregated bike lane with the pathway network along the Rideau Canal.
After installing a two-way cycle track on Mackenzie Avenue between the Château Laurier and U.S. Embassy, the city wants to design a safe two-way cycling connection from the Rideau Street intersection to the National Capital Commission pathway on the east side of the canal around Daly Avenue.

Egan: The city's wobbly history of naming things
Don’t ever let the City of Ottawa name your pet or child.
After a hellishly long wait, the new dog will be called “Hamster” or “Cat” or “Cilantro”, your twins will be named “Even” and “Worse.” Honestly, the city is that bad at these things.
Last month we stirred the waters over the decision to name the new footbridge over the Rideau Canal for Flora MacDonald (1926-2015), Canada’s first female foreign affairs minister and a N -
'It's a good kind of crazy': Camp FFIT is (literally) the hottest summer camp in the city
The car might be a fake, but the fire isn’t. Two by two, the girls at Camp FFIT (which stands for “female firefighters in training”) slowly approach with a hose, helped along by an instructor, and douse the blaze.
A few minutes later, an Ottawa firefighter hits a button, the fire ignites again, and two more young firefighters-in-training step up and extinguish it.
To some, it may be an unappealing concept: summer camp, but instead of bonfires, you get to put out flash and car f -

City prepares for photo radar rollout in school zones next year
Photo radar could be ready for some Ottawa school zones in 2019 after the city analyzes traffic data and decides what kind of camera mounts to use.
Traffic staff told councillors on the transportation committee Wednesday that the city is still waiting for word from the province about when the law allowing photo radar will come into effect. The city is involved with local and provincial working groups on the rollout.
The city has so far collected traffic data from 72 of 370 schools. Data collecti -

Legal experts say Crown questioning credibility of domestic abuse victim is 'dangerous strategy'
The child-assault case of a woman who was granted a conditional discharge after a judge ruled she was the victim of partner abuse should offer some “crucial lessons” to the court system, according to legal scholars and advocates for survivors of domestic violence.
The woman was charged in June 2017 with assaulting a child after her husband secretly filmed the incident on hidden cameras he placed around the home daycare she operated. He turned the tape over to authorities once she lef -
Guilty, but also a victim — how an Ottawa court case was upended after a woman re-lived her pain
Page after page of threatening texts from her estranged husband’s phone detailed all the ways he planned to “finish” her.
“My heart is broken,” she had texted him, telling him she’d tolerated his behaviour in the “hell” she called home because of her three children.
It’s “not fair for them to pay the price … and me,” she wrote.
A text came back from her husband’s phone late that night: “I will end you in the wor -
Police lay more gross indecency charges against former scout leader
A former Scout leader at an Alta Vista Drive church is facing five additional counts of gross indecency involving two more victims, bringing the total to four complainants and 11 charges, police reported Thursday.
Investigators still believe that there could be more victims, police said.
The scout leader at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church from 1972 to 1977 was initially charged last month.
Two men went to police in December 2017 to report incidents that are alleged to have happened in 1977 when -

Today's letters: Pot rules pose problems
Province makes pot use easy
Re: Province delays cannabis outlets, Aug. 14.
The internet is very weak at authenticating users. It is incredibly easy for a user to pretend to be someone else. If the Ontario government wants cannabis sold to people who are not supposed to be using it (i.e minors), it has chosen the right path by emphasizing internet distribution.
The private sector excels at encouraging consumption. Entrepreneurs are motivated by profit; their profit increases if they increase -

Tractor trailer crash causes Hwy 401 mess near Napanee
One eastbound lane of Highway 401 was closed at Napanee after a crash Thursday morning but the OPP was advising commuters to stay on the highway because construction in the area means there’s no quicker route.
The collision between a tractor-trailer truck and a passenger vehicle happened between Palace Road and Camden East Road, the OPP reported at about 7 a.m.
There were minor injuries plus debris strewn over the highway and a crushed guardrail.
“Expect delays but STAY on highway wi -

To rent in Ottawa or Gatineau? Here's what you need to know
So you’re moving to the National Capital Region, or you’re an Ottawa resident looking for a new rental unit. You’ve got a job in Ottawa, but you’ve heard it’s cheaper to rent across the bridge in Gatineau, and the numbers seem to reflect that when you poke around on rental listing websites.
According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s 2017 rental market reports for Ottawa-Gatineau, the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment was $782 on the -
Adam: How the Salvation Army shelter could change this election
Vanier residents are turning the controversial 350-bed Salvation Army shelter proposal on Montreal Road into a major election issue they hope will shake up the mayoral race and force a city climb-down. Whether their campaign has broad enough appeal to make a real impact remains to be seen. The good thing is, this is looking increasingly like an election in which candidates will be forced to discuss real issues facing voters.
SOS Vanier’s relentless opposition to the proposed shelter has no -

Today's letters: Should we bring photo radar to the city?
Don’t bring back photo radar
Re: Armchair mayor: Photo radar will save lives in Ottawa, Aug. 10.
Bringing in photo radar is simply the wrong approach. It is the same philosophy that has seen the steady reduction of speed limits and the lengthening of pointless waits at many red lights, where there are no vehicles or pedestrians.
Too often a small, vocal minority bullies our politicians to adopt policies which, on the surface, are all about safety. However, the unintended consequences of in -
Stewart: Saudi medical trainees mask a problem Canada should correct
The Saudi Arabian government’s pending threat of withdrawing Saudi medical residents (doctors undergoing specialty training after obtaining their MD) and fellows (those undertaking further training in a sub-specialty) is causing great consternation in Canadian university hospitals. There are between 750 and 1,000 Saudi trainees distributed among almost every medical faculty in Canada. Having known, taught and worked with many Saudi doctors, I have great personal sympathy for them if this a -
