Reward for finding Murphy the boa increases five days after his disappearance
Five days after he went missing, word on the streets of Westboro is that the reward for finding Murphy, the missing boa constrictor, has jumped to $300.
Twitter user Peter Quevillon said Wednesday that he’d spoken with the snake’s owner, and the reward for his safe return had increased from $200. An attached photo of Murphy’s missing poster showed an “X” through the original reward value, replaced with the heftier sum.
The 1.5-metre-long grey and brown snake disappe -

PCs' cannabis store scheme buys time for city to develop local policy
The Ontario Progressive Conservative government’s cannabis sales scheme has bought time for the City of Ottawa to develop a local policy, but the municipal government still needs to move fast so the next city council can make a decision shortly after taking office in December.
While the PCs are giving municipalities the choice of not having any pot shops, it’s unlikely that municipal politicians in a major city like Ottawa, sometimes bashed as the “city that fun forgot,” -
The tortuous path to Shopify's anti-gun policy
When Tobi Lütke set out 13 years ago to build an online site for selling snowboarding equipment, he had little idea just how complicated the whole enterprise would become.
Today he is piloting a $1-billion-a-year corporation whose technology underpins the operations of more than 600,000 online retailers who sell everything from cosmetics to guns.
That’s still the case despite the revision on Monday of Shopify’s user agreement policy to restrict the sale of particularly lethal we -

Shopify bans gun sales from its platforming, enraging online merchants
In an unexpected move, Shopify late Monday toughened the terms of its service agreement to prohibit the sale of many types of guns and ammunition. In so doing, the Ottawa firm has infuriated online retailers who relied on Shopify’s earlier promises to respect merchants’ freedom to sell legal goods.
“We spent a lot of time and money over the past year building out our platform with Shopify technology,” said Cole Leleux, the general manager of Spike’s Tactical, a Flor -
Pedestrians suffered minor injuries after Saturday truck incident near Parliament Hill
Ottawa paramedics say a man and a woman were slightly injured Saturday evening during an incident just west of Parliament Hill.
RCMP are investigating the incident during which a truck jumped onto a crowded sidewalk and suddenly turned into the vehicle screening area just west of Parliament Hill, leaving two people injured and lying on the ground.
Ottawa paramedics spokesperson Marc-Antione Deschamps said a woman in her 50s was injured when her foot was run over by a truck. A man in his 70s rece -
Coconut Lagoon restaurant to donate lunch-buffet proceeds to disaster relief in flood-stricken Kerala
The award-winning restaurant Coconut Lagoon on St. Laurent Boulevard says it’s donating all of its lunch-buffet revenues from this Thursday through Saturday to assist people suffering from the effects of catastrophic floods in the state of Kerala in southwestern India.
“It’s never happened (as badly) so far, the mudslides and torrential rains and flooding,” the restaurant’s owner Joe Thottungal, a native of Kerala, said Wednesday.
Over the last two weeks, floods in -
'Lucky' pilot escapes after flipping float plane in Thousand Islands
A pilot was lucky to escape serious injury late Wednesday morning when his float plane crashed on the St. Lawrence River, landing top down in water with only the pontoons visible.
The pilot, identified only as a 68-year-old California resident, landed between Mink and Hambly islands at 11:38 a.m., Leeds and Thousand Islands Fire Chief Rick Lawson said.
He’d landed on the water and was reportedly trying to take off again.
Nearby residents picked him up at the crash scene and sheltered him w -

Glavin: Removing Macdonald statue doesn't exactly fix deeper problems
Another statue, another city, another “healing journey,” and another familiar public ritual resumes, along with all the dramatic performances we’ve come to expect from these affairs, with all the loud ceremonial incantations that derive as they always do from the same irreconcilably opposing liturgies. It’s political correctness gone mad. It’s confronting our history as a racist colonial settler state. And on and on and on.
This time around, it’s a statue of S -
Woman defamed former employer with protests accusing agency of 'racism,' judge rules
An Ottawa woman has been fined $6,000 after she accused her ex-employer of “racism” in an extended protest — including a Twitter torrent and an email campaign — against her firing, a judge has ruled.
According to a judgment from Judge Robert N. Beaudoin of Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice, the story began in March 2015 when Marlene Casimir was fired — following an unspecified incident — by l’Association pour l’intégration -
House Works: Finish on an outdoor staircase, fix a loose tub surround
Conflicting advice on outdoor wood finishing
Q: What should I do about conflicting advice I’m getting about deck finishing? I just built a new staircase out of cedar and the measured moisture content of the wood is less than 10 per cent. Some brands of deck stain recommend letting new wood weather 4-12 months, then use a cleaner and brightener before applying a finish. Other brands say it’s okay to sand and apply stain whenever the wood is below 17 per cent moisture content. On -
Remembering an iconic Ottawa creation, the Contempra phone
When he was six years old, John Tyson won a sand castle-building contest at McNabb Park.
In retrospect, the other youngsters probably never had a chance. Tyson, who now resides in Barrhaven, went on to become an industrial designer best known for creating one of Canada’s most iconic and elegant products — the Contempra phone.
You can be forgiven if you’re too young to remember it by name — its decade-long heyday began half a century ago, after all. But for a time, the sle -

National Holocaust Monument fashion shoot a 'desecration of a sacred site': Jewish leaders
A weekend fashion photo shoot at the National Holocaust Monument was an inappropriate use of the site, which Jewish leaders say should be a place for reflection and learning, not levity.
“It’s not a place for fashion shoot,” said Mina Cohn, director of the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship at Carleton University’s Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies. “You wouldn’t do a fashion shoot at the National War Memorial downtown. That is no -

Man slightly hurt in Pinecrest-area car fire
A man suffered what paramedics said were minor burns to his arm after a car fire in parking lot at city police’s west-end service centre.
Firefighters were called to 2670 Queensview Dr., near Pinecrest Road, at 9:27 a.m. The flames were out by 9:46 a.m.
Paramedics were still on the scene as of 10:15 a.m.
No word yet on the cause of the blaze but Ottawa Fire Services warned the public to give car fires a wide berth of at least 100 metres and to never get back in a vehicle that’s on fi -
Wednesday wet weather: Severe thunderstorm watch in effect
Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the capital region as we head into a string of days with at least the risk of showers.
The next day with sunny skies and no chance of rain in the forecast is Sunday.
For Wednesday, in addition to keeping an eye open for T-storms, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a 60 per cent chance of showers this afternoon and evening and an extra-humid high of 29 C that will feel like 37.
The bright spot is a comfortably seasonal low of 15 C.

Kassam: Canadian Medical Association shouldn't cold-shoulder cannabis
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) recently announced that it supports the elimination of the current medical cannabis system once federal legalization is implemented in October. The rationale is “the lack of evidence, the lack of scientific studies showing it actually works, the lack of knowledge around dosing and interactions with other medications.”

Real estate race begins for Ontario pot shop locations
With the move to allow private businesses to operate cannabis stores in Ontario, the race is on to secure storefronts.

Officials at four major cannabis companies contacted by this newspaper say they anticipated the possibility of a policy shift to privately run pot shops and had already begun scouting locations. The companies are now building -
