RCMP rule out terrorism after truck injures pedestrians near Hill screening facility
An Ottawa man says he and his girlfriend watched in horror Saturday night as a truck jumped onto a sidewalk on the west side of Parliament Hill, driving into pedestrians and leaving two people on the ground injured.
“We just yelled, ‘Oh my god’,” said Moze Elfarra. “We were in shock.”
RCMP say the incident that happened at Vittoria and Bank streets near the vehicle screening facility on Parliament Hill on Saturday night was not terrorism-related.

Council candidates need to be creative if they campaign against rising transit fares
There’s probably a reason why only a handful of municipal election candidates address transit affordability in their campaign platforms posted online.
It’s not easy to stop annual fare and transit tax increases. Freezing fares would require more government money to run OC Transpo, and more government money could result in higher taxes or cuts in other services.
Transit fares might be a campaign issue in the Oct. 22 municipal election, but candidates will have to be creative if they p -

FBI warns banks about looming cyber attacks
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States has issued a warning to major financial institutions suggesting that hackers are planning a serious global attack as soon as this weekend.
The U.S. federal investigator said hackers will target automated teller machines (ATM) with the attack, attempting to steal millions of dollars in a small window of time, likely after-hours when the banks are closed.
According to Theresa Payton, chief executive of cyber security firm Fortilace Solutions -
NCC reveals $55M repair list as new minister leaves decisions on 24 Sussex up to agency
The National Capital Commission on Tuesday revealed its spending plan for the $55 million in repair funds earmarked in the last federal budget, but the agency could probably use a lot more to fix one of its most important assets at 24 Sussex Drive.
Pablo Rodriguez became heritage minister in the July cabinet shuffle, succeeding Mélanie Joly. The job comes with the responsibility for the NCC. Rodriguez said he still has to discuss priorities with the agency, but he’s letting the NCC -
No one on earth owns more bobbleheads than this Richmond collector
It started, as these things usually do, innocently enough — a promotional giveaway at a Senators’ game at the Corel Centre, with the club handing out thousands of its first-ever bobblehead doll, a likeness of right-winger Marian Hossa, to ticket-holders at its Dec. 15, 2001 match against the New Jersey Devils.
The Devils took the game 2-0, but Phil Darling went home a winner, the nodding Hossa under one arm. Little did he know the obsession in him that was waiting to be unleashed.

Losses will be small when Ontario switches to private pot stores, says Ontario Cannabis Store
Ontario won’t lose much money by shelving plans to create government-run cannabis stores, according to the subsidiary of the LCBO that was set up to operate the brick-and-mortar locations.
The new Conservative government in Ontario has changed course and decided the stores will be run by private businesses instead.
The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) agency had already leased space for four government-run stores in Toronto, Thunder Bay, Guelph and Kingston, hired some store managers and begun -
Man exposes himself, hurls puppy in Kingston
Talk about a sick puppy.
A dog was thankfully only slightly hurt Monday but a 37-year-old Kingston man is facing charges including committing an indecent act, assault, willfully causing pain to an animal and cause a disturbance after a weird incident in Kingston Monday.
Police report that a man was walking along a north-end sidewalk while “holding his genitals and yelling at citizens.”
When one told him to leave, the man picked up a puppy that was outside and threw it through an -

Police 'Hoopstar' runs and guns with kids in street basketball showdown
Getting challenged by a youngster to a quick pickup game of hoops is all in a day’s work for officers like Const. Kevin Graham.
The Ottawa Police Hoopstars tweeted a video Monday of the team member playing the impromptu game with kids while out on patrol.
In boots and a bulletproof vest, he captures the ball from one boy after a one-on-one then shows some smooth moves to dribble around another tyke before handing over the ball.

TV company offers $500 reward for town crier's stolen talking stick
A TV production company is betting $500 will get tongues wagging about a local town crier’s stolen talking stick.
The producers of Mix Métiers on TFO have issued a reward to recover Daniel Richer’s prized possession which disappeared from Majors Hill Park after they shot a segment with him Aug. 7, Richer said Tuesday.
The six-and-a-half-foot stick, carved like a totem pole, was a gift to Richer from the West Coast Salish First Nations people. It’s invaluable to -
Battle lines drawn in Heron Gate, where an evicted community doesn't plan on leaving
Though visually imperceptible, a front line has been drawn along Heron Road, Baycrest Drive and Sandalwood Drive in Ottawa’s Heron Gate rental community.
It runs across the neighbourhood’s overgrown lawns and overflowing garbage bins, in front of aging townhouses from which tenants have emerged to form a coalition that proclaims “#DefendHeronGate.”
“We are now being told, for the second time in two years, that our community will be destroyed and we have no say in th -
Solby: Ontario is making the right move with private cannabis sales
The Ontario government’s decision to take a step back and rework the cannabis retail plan toward private retail next April is a refreshing splash of common sense in the overheated cannabis world. The previous Liberal plan was by far the highest-cost solution, with a dedicated retail channel staffed by gold-plated wages.
The use of private retail will benefit cannabis consumers, government policy and taxpayers by offering three things that a public-sector solution cannot: scale, speed and s -
Cohen: Saudis and Canadians are equal in hypocrisy
Ten days after Canada’s grievous insult to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, there is enough hypocrisy and ineptitude on both sides to write another volume of Arabian Nights.
Begin with Saudi Arabia. Determined to make an example of Canada, the world’s boy scout, the Crown Prince lost it. Instead of retaliating with amputation, he chose beheading, in which his country has great expertise.
When Canada called for the release of Saudi dissidents, he could have expressed his displeasure by re -
Matt Duchene double-doubles fan's day in Timmy's drive-thru
An Ottawa Senators fan left an Orillia Tim Horton’s drive-thru with more than a bite for the ride home last weekend thanks to centre Matt Duchene.
“I honestly can’t make this up it I tried,” said the anonymous fan who tweets as @SensHky.
He, his girlfriend and a buddy in a Sens hat were in line when a “buddy in a lifted white truck” noticed the hat, got out and came over.
He said he “couldn’t help but notice the hat, thanks for the support guy -
Ottawa police arrest robbery suspect after pursuit on Highway 417
Ottawa police have arrested a man following a brief pursuit on Highway 417 Monday.
At about 2:20 p.m. a patrol officer identified a vehicle matching the description of a automobile that was reportedly used in a number of commercial robberies. The officer also recognized the male driver as someone who resembled the suspect from those robberies.
The officer requested backup from other officers, who joined the pursuit.
Police officers used their vehicles to box in the suspect’s automobil -
