City tests '3D' road markings that look like Star Trek symbols
Motorists pumped their brakes Friday afternoon as they approached two odd shapes on a straightaway behind the Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre, perhaps giving credibility to a city pilot program for “3D” road markings.
The markings look like two Star Trek Starfleet logos pressed onto Othello Avenue. They’re designed so that approaching motorists think the markings are speed bumps, slowing down traffic.
Alta Vista Coun. Jean Cloutier said the thermal plastic markings cost $3,500 to -

The Jazz Standard beckons (or, 20 or so great reasons to make a jazz journey to New York this fall)
I’m just a few days back from the jazz-saturated end of my summer vacation and I’m already thinking of taking a jazz-centric getaway in the fall.
The reason: I received a listing for this fall’s bookings at the Jazz Standard in New York.
If that club isn’t among your favourites, it should be. I’ve been a big fan of it for almost two decades, ever since I caught gigs there by the guitarist Peter Bernstein’s quartet with Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier and Bill St -

Liew: Why Crazy Rich Asians is a bigger deal than you think
Why is an all-Asian cast rom-com getting so much buzz this summer?
Crazy Rich Asians opens on August 15 and people are calling it a watershed moment in Hollywood. Chef René Rodriguez leaves Orto Trattoria, will helm new French restaurant on Elgin
Veteran Ottawa chef René Rodriguez’s Italian cooking phase has ended. This fall, he’ll turn his attention to French fare.
Rodriguez said Friday that he has left the kitchen at Orto Trattoria in the Glebe, which opened last fall. Promoted to become Orto’s chef was sous-chef Razmon Poisson. Pastry chef Marie Ford also remains at Orto.

City needs more money to keep paint on the roads
The city says it needs more money in its annual $2.95-million road painting budget to keep the standard markings from vanishing.
More people have been complaining about the quality of road markings in Ottawa since the federal government forced changes to the composition of the paint, a city analysis shows.
Coun. Diane Deans asked staff to explain in writing how federal regulations on road paint have impacted the city’s operations. The response was released publicly this week.

Gormley: Social media limits on free speech necessary, but murky
However universal we claim them to be, every democracy sets limits on the very rights that its constitution declares inalienable.
Many of these limits on democratic rights seem arbitrary. Boundaries often do; still, we largely respect them. We know, for example, that an ill-informed 18-year-old may have a lesser ability to vote than a well-informed 17 1/2-year-old, yet we understand it is sensible to have a voting age limit. So while we bicker about precisely which age limit is most appropriate, -

Volunteers, OPP mobilize to rescue dog from forest rock crevice
A doggie named Dobbie is safe and sound after rescuers teamed up with the OPP to free him from a deep crevice of rock in a Lansdowne-area forest.
According to an OPP East Region Facebook post Wednesday, the Weimaraner went missing July 20 from Reynolds Road in the community about 150 km southwest of Ottawa where his worried family had recently moved.
The owners could hear faint barks but found no trace of their dog.

Timeless or trendy, wallpaper is back and making a statement
“Wallpaper” and “sophisticated” are not words you’d traditionally pair together when it comes to interior decorating. But today’s wallpaper is anything but the tacky florals once found at Grandma’s house and it’s become a popular option for today’s designers.
“Like it or not, wallpaper is back with a vengeance,” says designer Luc Crawford. “Gone are the rooms swallowed by large prints and dark hues and colours. Designers tod -

National Capital jobless rate ticks upward in July
The Capital Region’s jobless rate ticked up slighting to 4.5 per cent in July, from the 4.4 per cent it stood at in June, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
July’s unemployment rate marked a minimal increase to what has been the lowest unemployment rate in at least 31 years and suggests that the region’s economy is continuing to hold strong and finally recovering from the effects of the 2008-2009 recession. Data compiled prior to 1987 reflects different metropolitan boundaries -

Ottawa firefighters were called to put out a stubborn fire early Friday in an end unit apartment in a rowhouse complex at 1149 Meadowlands Dr., near Fisher Avenue.

Firefighters employed a fast attack technique, both to extinguish the flames and to prevent it from spreading to connected units.
The unit was vacant and no injuries were reported. A fi -

'It's not NIMBY, it's nowhere': Opposition to Salvation Army shelter complex remains strong in Vanier
A 1992 Chevrolet van rumbles up to a home on Richelieu Avenue.
Out springs Bruce McConville, his shirt already a darker shade of blue thanks to the sweat seeping through it on this muggy, grey morning. He’s here to collect some furniture for an upcoming garage sale intended to raise money for SOS Vanier’s legal fight.
The community group needs $200,000 to cover the cost of appealing to the Ontario Municipal Board to prevent a 350-bed Salvation Army homeless shelter complex from openi -
Armchair mayor: Photo radar will save lives in Ottawa
This fall, citizens of Ottawa elect a new city council. To foster debate during the campaign, we’ve asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place – without necessarily breaking the bank. Today, safety advocate Emile Therien brings us up to speed on his proposal.
—
The biggest improvement our city could make would be introducing photo radar.
I and many other safety advocates were disappointed in 1995 when the Ontario government rescinded its ph
