Innes candidates out to prove they can stickhandle hot planning files with councillor on leave
Municipal election candidates in an east-end ward are trying to show their planning chops on an application that proposes to change a community design plan while the local councillor is on leave from city hall.
The east urban community design plan calls for a low-density residential development on the forested land at 2983 Navan Rd. Taggart Realty Management wants the city to reclassify the land as commercial to allow a retail centre, which would have a grocery store, two restaurants, a drive-th -

Here, in alphabetical order, are the long list’s 30 picks:

Mayor Jim Watson will meet with two of the main players in the LeBreton Flats redevelopment on Friday.
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and Trinity executive chairman John Ruddy are scheduled to be at city hall in the morning.
The Senators and Trinity are the major partners in RendezVous LeBreton Group, which has the negotiating rights with the National Capital Commission to redevelop the Flats.
RendezVous wants to build an NHL arena, Sensplex, residential towers and other amenities.

Acclaimed young chef to close her restaurant, the Beechwood Gastropub, at the end of August
The Beechwood Gastropub in Vanier is to close at the end of August, with its much-respected young chef-owner Harriet Clunie citing insufficient revenue and her exhaustion as two of several reasons for the closure.
“I’m at a level of burnout that’s unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced,” Clunie, 33, said in an interview this week, explaining that her business, which she has owned for a little more than a year-and-a-half, had “perpetually been short-staffed -
Doucet rails against Timbercreek demolition in Heron Gate
Mayoral candidate Clive Doucet says he wouldn’t let a landlord gentrify a piece of Heron Gate with tall towers to replace affordable housing.
“I would not be creating a system where you’re actually advantaging the mismanagement of property and rewarding that mismanagement with an upzoning,” Doucet said Thursday. “I think that’s unconscionable.”
Timbercreek Communities is evicting 105 households from its Heron Gate properties because the company says the -

Stop the Bleed: teaching citizens how to react in event of mass shooting
A public health initiative that grew out of one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history could help save lives in Ottawa starting this fall.
The program called Stop the Bleed, which was begun in the U.S. after the Sandy Hook school shooting, is being compared to CPR training but for traumatic injuries involving bleeding. The Ottawa Hospital is expecting to launch the program in Ottawa next month, with courses for the public starting soon after.

Adam: Time to consider electing councillors-at-large
Mayor Jim Watson may have changed his mind about shrinking council, but that should not stop the city from a serious debate this election cycle on what Ottawa really needs: councillors-at-large.
The trouble is, 18 years after amalgamation, we have city councillors only in name. Many, if not most of our city politicians are really ward councillors whose main focus is their small enclaves. The interests of the larger city are often secondary.
Most of the 23 councillors represent rural and suburban -
Police warn about jewelry thieves prowling Ottawa
Ottawa police are warning capital area residents about a group of scam artists that are targeting people and stealing their jewelry and other valuables.
According to police, the suspects have been approaching potential victims on the side of the road, in parking lots, or outside their homes. They then ask the victims for assistance, sometimes asking for directions or other help.
The suspects then distract or scam victims, for example offering to trade pieces of jewelry, or forcefully remove -

Severe thunderstorm watch issued, but a glorious weekend ahead
Stop us if you’ve heard this before: Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the capital region.
The agency had issued a forecast for a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 per cent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon or evening, Environment Canada reports. The high was expected to be 27 C with a humidex of 32. The UV index is 7 or high.
But, seriously, Friday looks fabulous — mainly sunny and 25 C with a smidge of humidity that will -

Kindergarten teacher struck by PWC recovering after second extensive head surgery
Casey Delaney was on the mend in intensive care Thursday after a second hours-long surgery to her skull since she was struck by a personal watercraft on the Gatineau River.
The Canada Day hit-and-run left the 26-year-old kindergarten teacher in a medically-induced coma but after her family waited on pins and needles all day Wednesday and into the night, sister Kristin said that Casey is on the mend.
“I am so happy to say that Casey’s surgery was a success and she is recovering well,& -

Antiques: Dollar paid for lacrosse book buys rare piece of Canadian history
Q: I picked up a great little book at an estate sale for $1. I was told its quite rare and that I should look into it. It is hard cover, approximately 15 x 10 cm (6 x 4 inches), 256 pages and titled ‘Lacrosse — The National Game of Canada,’ published by Dawson Brothers, Montreal, 1869 authored by W.G. Beers. It does have one page of pictures missing at the front. Is it valuable?
Austin, Ottawa
A: You were given good advice. This is a very rare book. The p -
One more risk-of-rain day, then a glorious weekend ahead
One more sleep and then a string of dry and sunnier days arrives just in time for the weekend.
For Thursday, the forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 per cent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon or evening, Environment Canada reports. The high is 27 C with a humidex of 32. The UV index is 7 or high.
But Friday looks fabulous — mainly sunny and 25 C with a smidge of humidity that will make it feel like 28 and a UV index of 8 or very high. Then -

Trillium LRT line shuts next week for maintenance
Users of OC Transpo’s Trillium LRT line will be back on the buses next week as Line 2 shuts down from Sunday, Aug. 12 to Sunday Aug. 19 for maintenance.
As usual in such cases, Route 1087 buses will travel between Bayview and South Keys every 15 minutes. There are stops along the route close to LRT stations.
The maintenance work takes place in summer when ridership — such as the usual high number of Carleton University students — is lower.

Citizen letters: Whose rights are worthy of taking a stand?
Standing up for human rights never wrong
Shocking that the Citizen would challenge Canada’s “diplomacy” over human rights. And then not back off when the Kingdom tries to bully us. The Saudis picked on a woman, Freeland, who had the audacity to say what is painfully obvious. Being proactive on human rights and wrongful imprisonment with lives associated with Canada is never wrong, however blunt, and if democratic countries like America don’t stand with us then they are ab -

The remarkably unremarkable 'Gee-Gees case' and what it means
It was a cause célèbre that not only focused attention of the issue of sexual assault and violence, but also on the behaviour and treatment of star student athletes at the University of Ottawa, the largest post-secondary institution in Canada’s capital.
But in the wake of the judge’s not-guilty verdict — and the Crown’s decision not to appeal — the “Gee-Gees case” has fuelled questions about the complex nature of prosecuting sexual ass -

Kindergarten teacher struck by PWC awakens from coma, undergoes surgery
The family of Casey Delaney waited on pins and needles all day Wednesday and into the night as their beloved daughter and sister underwent a second surgery to her skull more than a month after she was hit by a personal watercraft while floating on the Gatineau River.
The 26-year-old kindergarten teacher and avid athlete has been recovering at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus since the hit and run on July 1. Her sister, Kristin, 24, confirmed she was placed in a medically induced coma for
