Local Buddhist society planning grand temple near Richmond
A local Buddhist society is leaving urban Ottawa to build a unique grand temple in a more peaceful area near the village of Richmond, hoping the ornate facility will also be a draw for worshipers from across eastern Ontario and Quebec.
The International Buddhist Progress Society of Ottawa-Carleton has applied to the City of Ottawa for land-use permission to carve out a piece of forested land for a temporary worship facility and traditional Chinese-style temple at 6688 Franktown Rd.

Towed last month in the Glebe, Yakko Takko food truck reopened Tuesday in Hintonburg
Yakko Takko, a Mexican food truck that was towed from its location in the Glebe last month after it violated city bylaws, has found a new home in Hintonburg.
Roberto Reyes, the food truck’s owner, said Tuesday that his business reopened at 1195 Wellington St. W., near Hamilton Avenue, where a gelato stand had been.
“It’s a better vibe now,” Reyes said Tuesday.
In early July, after a slew of complaints from neighbouring businesses, Ottawa bylaw officers towed Reyes Truck f -

Vandals scorch monument to staff of former City of Kanata
Police are without leads – including exactly when it happened – in a case of vandalism to a granite monument commemorating pre-amalgamation employees of the former City of Kanata.
The local councillor, the first mayor of Kanata, vowed Tuesday on Twitter to have the area cleaned up.
Coun. Marianne Wilkinson reported the arson at the monument on Maritime Way at Canadian Shield Avenue on Aug. 1, police said. Vandals appear to have tried to set the monument on fire leaving the platf -

Tree topples, unseating Mary at St. Patrick Basilica
Monday’s punishing storm winds appear to have felled part of a majestic maple that in turn levelled the column supporting a statue of the Virgin Mary outside St. Patrick Basilica.
Mary looked serene through photographer Wayne Cuddington’s lens, but she’s surrounded by pieces of her toppled pedestal and caged by broken branches on the lawn of the basilica at the corner of Kent and Nepean streets.
There’s no word on the age of the statue or tree – a neighbour estimate -

Jazz on a summer's day at the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival
My summer vacation ended last week on a high note — or more precisely, innumerable beautiful notes played during the opening day of the 2018 Newport Jazz Festival.
The premier American outdoor jazz festival’s latest edition, presented by Natixis Investment Managers, kicked off Friday morning at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island, with prodigiously talented teenagers playing Salt Peanuts and Senor Blues. Cohen: If we really care about progress in Saudi Arabia, call it the medieval absolute monarchy it is
Pity Saudi Arabia, the world’s most fragile flower. It is feeling aggrieved. It is wilting under Canada’s withering gaze. Oh, the shame of it all.
It took only two terse statements to set off the poor, put-upon Saudis. Now this has become a casus belli with Canada worthy of the Zimmerman Telegram.
The great offence? Chrystia Freeland tweeted that she was “very alarmed” to learn that Samar Badawi, the sister of imprisoned blogger Raif Badawi, has also been jailed in Saudi -

Thieves make off with municipal dock in Quinte West
Merely paddling off with a kayak or canoe is clearly for landlubbers, but these thieves pirated the whole dock.
Quinte West OPP are hunting for the paddle craft dock which was stolen from a fuelling area at the Trent Port Marina last month. The wooden dock valued at more than $3,200 went missing some time between July 9 and July 19.
The hardware was all intact, suggesting the dock was stolen and not swept away, although there’s no evidence of whether it was taken by land or water.

Some home ownership challenges are easy to understand and others are mysterious. Summertime mustiness is one of the mysterious kind. I was reminded of this when I got a message from a puzzled man growing weary of battling mustiness rising from his carpet. “If I don’t run the dehumidifier all the time during hot weather”, he explained, “the carpet on the concrete main floor of our home smells strongly of mould. Modernization program could see Cormorant helicopters return to Trenton
The federal government’s plan to move ahead with the modernization of Cormorant search and rescue helicopters could see the return of Cormorants on the flight line at Trenton, Ont., says the Canadian Forces. The RCAF is hoping for “the potential re-introduction of the CH-149 Cormorant helicopter to Trenton” once the Cormorant modernization program is finished, it added. If that happens the Griffon helicopters currently assigned to 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, would be ret -

Editorial: Delicate dance of diplomacy too important to stage on Twitter
International affairs can be a delicate, and sometimes dangerous, dance for world leaders.
The steps and missteps come with the most serious of stakes – from security, to the economy, to matters of life and death.
As such, this weekend’s blowup between Canada and Saudi Arabia should be viewed with concern.
While most Canadians were enjoying a holiday long weekend, a days-old tweet from Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland escalated into a major diplomatic row with the King -

Today's letters: An idea to bring generations together
An inspiring ‘armchair mayor’
Re: Armchair mayor – make Ottawa a real learning hub, July 31.
One of the ways I stay connected to what people in Ottawa think is by reading the letters to the editor. Charlie Lowthian-Rickert’s letter caught my eye, and my heart.
What an inspirational young person, already making a difference in our community! Not only are her thirst for learning and pursuit of knowledge and discovery notable, her inter-generational idea of “Rent-a-Gra -
Rubin: Government silence on Hassan Diab shows full inquiry is needed
Ottawa academic Hassan Diab, held for three years in France without charge over accusations of terrorism, had little choice but to boycott the limited external review of his extradition case that Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould has set up under former Ontario deputy attorney general Murray Segal.
Segal’s review, with its narrow scope and powers, could end up hitting the same roadblocks and secrecy – and falling short of needed answers – that I am experiencing in my i
