  A pair of presumably avoidable blazes kept Gatineau firefighters on the go on Monday.
  The first, sparked by a dish left unsupervised on the stove, caused at estimated $15,000 damage to a three-story home on rue du Blizzard, just north of Pink Road, in the Plateau neighbourhood just before noon hour. Two people were forced to evacuate and were placed in the care of the Red Cross.

• Man, 52, killed in motorcycle crash in Killaloe

  A 52-year-old man is dead after the motorcycle he was riding crashed north of Killaloe, about 170 kilometres west of Ottawa.
  Steven Mayhew of Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards Township lost control of his motorcycle on Round Lake Road, near Tramore Road, and crashed into the ditch at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police said in a media release.
  Mayhew was taken to hospital by ambulance but died as a result of his injuries.

  Gatineau police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run between a vehicle and a pedestrian.
  So far there’s little information to go on.
  A 60-year-old man suffered minor head injuries when a vehicle knocked him down at the intersection of Gréber Boulevard and Orléans Street at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
  Police can only call it a vehicle for now because no one has been able to give them a description of it.

  A home was destroyed in Ottawa’s south end early Monday morning.
  Ottawa Fire Services reported that a working two-alarm fire was declared at 4:41 am at 2055 Baffin Avenue.
  Crews arrived and, after evaluating the situation, declared a “defensive fire attack.”
  The fire at 2055 Baffin Avenue is under control and crews are beginning to clear the scene. There was no one home at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported. #OttNews #ottcity #ottfire pic.twitter.com/qginvi

  The good news is that the end of this mini-heat wave is in sight.
  Today’s high is expected to reach 32 C but the humidex will push that to 40.
  Like yesterday, there’s a chance of rain and thunderstorms beginning this afternoon.
  Unlike yesterday, however, that system will be accompanied by a cold front, which should provide some relief.
  Tonight’s low will be 19 C.

  Ottawa police say they expect to lay weapons charges after arresting two men and seizing a loaded handgun early Sunday.
  On Saturday about 10 a.m. someone fired a series of shots at a private home on Heatherington Road, nearly Walkley Road. The gunman drove away in a car.
