Flames engulfed a garage in south Barrhaven on Saturday afternoon, causing injuries to one person.
Ottawa fire crews prevented the blaze from spreading to any homes.
The fire broke out a little before 3:30 p.m. at 230 Alex Polowin Ave., and it was declared under control by 3:49 p.m.
Ottawa Paramedics treated one person at the scene, but did not need to take the patient to hospital.
An Ottawa fire Investigator was sent to the scene to determine the cause.

Warning issued, with heat expected to build through the long weekend
Saturday was just the warmup act in a long weekend that’s going to get even hotter.
Environment Canada issued a warning for Ottawa on Saturday about a “two-day heat event” that is to begin Sunday. The forecast calls for a high of 32 C on each of Sunday and Monday, or a couple of degrees hotter than Saturday.
It will be sticky, too: “Humidex values reaching 40 are expected,” the weather office says. “The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, old -
Appeals court rules man who smuggled gold in rectum shouldn't have to pay for market price hike
How much does it cost to replace gold? It depends, because the price of gold fluctuates on the open market. That kind of thing matters if you’re a gold buyer, and it turns out that it also matters if you’re a gold thief.
Leston Lawrence and his lawyers used this to his advantage. In a decision by the Ontario Court of Appeals, three judges ruled that Lawrence’s fine should be reduced by nearly $60,000 because the gold he stole from the Royal Canadian Mint was not as valuable whe -
Loaded truck doing 100 in a 60 km/h zone meets enforcement blitz as long weekend begins
The fully-loaded 18-wheeler was doing a nice steady 100 km/h when Phil Kane spotted it.
Two problems: The speed limit was 60 km/h. And Kane is a traffic cop.
This was on River Road, a winding, two-lane street with houses and farmland beside it. Kane calls it a dangerous place to speed, and the driver became an early statistic in the annual rush of holiday weekend traffic offences.

Two dogs shot after attacking police in Gatineau
Gatineau police shot and killed two dogs early Saturday, saying the dogs attacked an officer who was trying to make an arrest.
Three men have been arrested.
Police were called to a complaint about a disturbance in an apartment on Joanisse Street, south of Lake Leamy Park, at about 4 a.m. A neighbour told police that a man inside the apartment was bleeding, but when police arrived the people inside the apartment closed and locked the doors and windows, and threatened to set dogs on officers if th -
Activist argues new rules on private land in Gatineau Park could lead to more development
A Chelsea resident who has spent years fighting private development inside Gatineau Park says a planned bylaw change in Pontiac could delay increased public ownership of the park’s land.
The park’s east side lies in Chelsea and the west side is in Pontiac. There are private lots inside the park boundaries, mostly cottages and homes that were privately owned before the park’s creation in the mid-1900s.
Jean-Paul Murray has spent years opposing private residential development of -

Rescuers travel by foot, canoe, plane and helicopter to save hiker
The rescue of an Algonquin Park hiker injured on a trail Friday was no walk in the park.
The 32-year-old man was walking on rough terrain of the Highland Trail when he fell, suffering a severely fractured leg.
He was five kilometres from the end of the trail, located a little west of the Lake of Two Rivers, and couldn’t walk out.The man needed surgery. He and his hiking partner also couldn’t phone for help from that location.
But a passing hiker walked out to where he could call in t -

Rose: Cycling 'is not an efficient way to travel' – time to bring back sanity to Ottawa streets
“The number of people choosing to cycle to work, to school, for errands and for recreation continues to grow every year in Ottawa, across the city.” This is the first line on a city of Ottawa webpage about cycling. The city likes to boast about spending millions of dollars to build segregated bicycle lanes while at the same time eliminating car lanes and parking spaces. That appears to encourage cycling. Of course it would.
On the other hand, the city should also pursue other re -

Hot, humid and a risk of thunderstorms
Do you have big plans for this long weekend?
Will a high humidex and a chance of thunderstorms put a wrench in your backyard shenanigans?
Today’s temperature should easily hit 30 C which the humidex will bump up to a feels like 35.
There’s a 60 per cent chance of showers this afternoon and a risk that will develop into a thunderstorm.
That risk of rain and t-storms will last through the night when the temperature drops to 19 C.
Sunday is forecast to be hot hot hot.

Simmons: Yes, we can stop some of the harm of opioid addiction
“I’d rather die than go into withdrawal,” he said, staring into my eyes. I didn’t know how extreme addiction could get until I heard those words. I had never thought the body could become so dependent on a drug it would be more important to a person than avoiding death.
That was my first time face-to-face with the opioid crisis on my own as a doctor. It was last summer at The Ottawa Hospital on an overnight shift as the senior medical resident.

Portman: How 'cultural appropriation' challenges artistic creativity
Last year, the Stratford Festival unveiled a production for the memory books. The Breathing Hole, by Canadian playwright Colleen Murphy, traced the mythic adventures of a polar bear through centuries of Canadian history, beginning with the first contact between white explorers and the Inuit of the North. It was a spellbinding experience, enriched by the presence of several Inuit cast members and an Indigenous director.
Less than a year later, Quebec’s internationally renowned Robert Lepage -
Today's letters: The cycling debate heats up
Cyclists deserve a safe space
Re: End the war between cyclists and motorists, July 28.
It is surprising, given recent coverage by David Reevely of the unsafe design for cyclists on Holland Avenue, that the Citizen would run a column proposing road safety education instead of safe cycling infrastructure. As one of the organizers of the campaign for cycling infrastructure on Holland Avenue, I am confident that the hundreds of people who signed a petition asking for bike lanes, as well as the 100 pe -

Flemming: Ottawa needs tougher rules to preserve heritage buildings
The recent partial collapse of the late 19th-century Magee House – a heritage designated building on Wellington Street West – raises the question of how effective the city’s effort to combat “demolition by neglect” has been.
Demolition by neglect can be defined as the inadvertent or premeditated neglect of properties, leading to their being so degraded that unless repaired to at least meet minimum property standards, they become subject to a demolition order by the -
Editorial: Lisa MacLeod's rocky start
At first, it must have seemed like a dream come true. Having toiled in opposition ranks as a Progressive Conservative for 12 years, Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod is now a senior player at Queen’s Park and the Ontario government’s point-person for our region.
But the new minister of children, community and social services is off to a choppy start. Already, she’s struggling with challenges that will define her political legacy.
MacLeod is a good soldier, and we’ve no doubt she&rs -

Legacies live on at Glengarry Highland Games
Kevin Fast leans on the fence at the Maxville fairgrounds grandstand on Friday morning and watches as his son, Matthew, warms up. Bagpipes and drummers can be heard in the near distance as a 20-pound rock thrown by Matthew thuds into the ground.
Matthew is a bit taller than his dad and weighs a little less than the 300 pounds the old man packs on his 5-9 frame. Matthew also started throwing the cabers, rocks, sheafs and whatnot — the instruments of the seven kilt-wearing, grunt-induci -
