Momentum in Ottawa's house sales shifts to the west and south
Ottawa’s home buyers showed some resistance in July to prices in popular neighbourhoods from Westboro to New Edinburgh. Instead, they travelled further west and south in search of less expensive houses still within commuting distance.
That, at least, is the picture that emerges from sales data published Friday by the Ottawa Real Estate Board, which drew on reports from 3,000 realtors who use the multiple listing service.
The board reported the benchmark price for single family homes across -

Two-day John sweep in Vanier yields 13 arrests
Police say community concerns led to 13 arrests in a two-day “John sweep” of Vanier this week.
The officers were looking for John or prostitutes’ clients in the Montreal Road and Lafontaine Avenue area on Wednesday and Thursday. The investigation stemmed from community and business concerns about ongoing prostitution and men soliciting for that purpose in residential neighbourhoods.
The round-up resulted in 13 arrests with seven criminal charges laid. Several of the accuse -

Reevely: Ontario is actually literally on fire, but Toronto politics dominate at Queen's Park
To judge by the Ontario New Democrats’ performance in question period this week, the thing that matters most in the province is the composition of Toronto’s city council.
Forest fires are burning barely checked in the north. The Progressive Conservatives have torn up Ontario’s climate-change plan. Nobody knows what’s going on with social assistance and government disability supports. Everything’s waiting for a “line-by-line audit” of government spending -
Armed and dangerous: Warrant issued for man after police find loaded gun
Police have obtained an arrest warrant for a 23-year-old Ottawa man who is believed to be armed and dangerous.
The warrant was obtained for Ken-Weekenden Tshilombo in relation to a loaded handgun located by police in the Caldwell Avenue area this past week.
Police said Tshilombo is known to identify himself with various aliases. He is described as a black male, 6-1, 189 pounds, with a heavy build, short hair, and brown eyes.
He faces a variety of charges, including possession of a fire -

The exercise ran from June 27 to August 2.
RIMPAC is the world’s largest maritime exercise. Canada, along with Australia and the United States, has participated in every exerci -
OC Transpo wants to buy commemorative O-Train swag before launching LRT
It seems you can’t launch a $2.1-billion LRT line without some commemorative swag to mark the largest capital expense in the City of Ottawa’s history.
The city is in the market for hundreds of special transit jackets to be part of staff uniforms for the opening of the Confederation Line.
Billed in tender documents as the “O-Train Launch Commemorative Fleece Jacket,” the swag will be handed out to transit staff dedicated to LRT operations. The city is asking for quotes on -

Ottawa Humane Society bursting with homeless cats, needs adoptive families
The Ottawa Humane Society says its feline population has reached a critical level, and that it’s in urgent need of families to adopt homeless cats and kittens.
“We are in full on kitty crisis mode,” said Bruce Roney, OHS president and CEO, in a press release on Friday. “We need to find homes.”
The shelter is housing a combined total of nearly 500 cats and kittens.
“The cats need your help,” said Roney. “We have 122 adult cats and 35 kittens ready t -
Gatineau barbecue fire displaces four
The quintessential summer event — the barbecue — took a dark turn for four people in Gatineau Thursday night.
They were displaced following a barbecue fire that caused serious damage to a home at 244 rue Jeannine Grégoire Ross, near Highway 148 and Rue Notre Dame in east Gatineau.
According to the Gatineau fire service, firefighters brought the blaze under control just after 7 p.m. Thanks to their quick action, the damage — estimated at more than $90,000 &m -
Gormley: Toronto secessionists give politics of division new meaning
“This is not a crazy idea.” That is what a Toronto mayoral candidate said last week of an idea that is certifiably, institutionalization-level crazy. Crazy is in fact the kindest word one can use to describe the idea, a word that is kind enough to be inaccurate and inaccurate enough to be kind. Crazy at least sounds like a bit of fun.
What urban-planner-cum-secessionist-rebellion-leader Jennifer Keesmaat proposed is not fun: Toronto should separate from Ontario as a reaction to Premi -

Police carrying out long weekend campaigns to ensure drivers, boaters respecting the law
While many Ottawans are preparing to kick back and relax this Civic Holiday long weekend, the OPP and Ottawa police are gearing up for enforcement and awareness campaigns on the highways, lakes and rivers.
The OPP want you to be particularly cognizant of emergency vehicles and tow trucks that are pulled over on the side of the road when you’re making the cottage commute or driving elsewhere across the province this weekend.

‘It’s not all about cost. It’s about family, home and heart’: Deciding between a home remodel or buying new
When does a home renovation stop making sense and start wasting money?
For veteran renovator Roy Nandram, president of RND Construction, the $500,000 mark should be a red flag to homeowners that building a new home or buying a resale might be a better choice— but there’s no hard and fast rule.
While homeowners Andrew Cameron and Susan D’Antoni didn’t expect to spend over half a million dollars for their Glebe remodel, it’s not something they regret.

Watch out for cyclist inappropriately touching women in the east end, police warn
Ottawa police warned east-end residents to be on guard Friday after receiving multiple reports about a man “inappropriately touching” women as he rode past on his bicycle in the area.
Police fielded a total of four reports about a similarly-described suspect between June 7 and July 31.
The alleged inappropriate touching happened between the Aviation Parkway and Orleans, according to police.
The suspect was described as a white or Middle-Eastern man between 16 and 26 years-old, with a -

Hot and humid Friday, mercury expected to keep rising over the long weekend
With a forecast high of 28 C, Friday is slated to be the coolest it’s going to get for a little while, heading into what Environment Canada says should be a sweltering long weekend.
Expect a mix of sun and cloud Friday with a humidex of 35 and a UV index or eight or very high.

A recent poll puts NDP support at a miserly 11.8 per cent. The last time the Dippers came in at 11 per cent was the 1997 federal electi -

Keep in mind, Monday isn’t an official statutory holiday, so there are fewer closures than you might expect. When in doubt, or if your business/facility/service of choice isn’t listed here, call ahead.
And remember, Que -

Today's letters: What's the Tory plan for jobs in Ontario?
It’s not easy to hit the ‘pause’ button
Re: Tories press pause on welfare ‘mess’, Aug. 1.
Reading Minister Lisa MacLeod’s comment that the social assistance system in Ontario “needs a pause,” I am left to wonder if those who rely on the system are expected to simply “pause” their lives over the next three months while they await a new and improved plan from the government.
As a retired physical education department head and former schoo -

Squirrel rolls around with stuffed dog toy, or the cutest thing you've seen all day
Dawna Ramsay gazed out into her Alta Vista backyard on Wednesday.
There, she glimpsed animal behaviour unlike anything she’d ever seen – from a squirrel.
The playful rodent had co-opted her dog’s stuffed pony toy.
Undaunted by the fact the stuffed animal was the same size as it was – or perhaps, made more intrigued – the squirrel rolled around with the toy.
It soon ran off, but luckily, Ramsay caught the moment on video. -
