The old Westboro convent is still at the centre of a development controversy, with the owner on Thursday failing to win approval from the city’s heritage panel for a repair-and-redevelopment scheme.
Ashcroft Homes’ proposal to tear down part of the convent, fix up the rest and connect into a new nine-storey residential complex has heritage advocates decrying the loss of history and the community association skeptical that commercial tenants will be viable in a boxed-in location at 11

Scanlan: Woman with cerebral palsy struggles to find consistent home care
Janet Timpson is a woman about town. Catch her if you can.
For 39 years, she had season’s tickets to her beloved Ottawa 67’s, still gets to a lot of hockey games, and loves to tell the story of legendary coach and GM Brian Kilrea visiting her table at the Chances R Restaurant.
“He was so nice,” Timpson says.
Part of the vast Ottawa area Timpson clan (Janet’s father, Bill, is one of 18 children), Timpson was born with cerebral palsy, but was able to walk for most of -

Crumbling Hintonburg heritage building is a 'house of cards,' expert says
There was virtually no mortar holding the stones together on a wall that crumbled off a Hintonburg heritage building last week, according to the engineer hired by the city to assess the structure.
“It’s basically a house of cards, this building right now,” John Cooke said of the Magee House during a built-heritage subcommittee meeting at city hall on Thursday.
The western wall of the 144-year-old building at 1119 Wellington St. W. collapsed on July 24, forcing a temporary road -

Off-duty Ottawa police officers will attend the Capital Pride parade wearing ordinary clothes rather than their uniforms.
For the second year in a row, the week’s organizers requested that off-duty officers leave their uniforms at home so that “everyone feels safe at Pride, particularly LGBTQ2 youth, and racialized and Indigenous community members.”
Last year, Chief Charles Bordeleau initially said he wanted to wear his uniform, but in the end wore a golf shirt with a small pol -
In Maxville, the pipes — and cabers, sheafs, mushy peas and a ceilidh — are calling
In 1948, a group of Maxville businessmen, fearing Scottish traditions were being lost to younger generations, organized the first Glengarry Highland Games. It was an instant success, as Maxville, according to the Ottawa Citizen, “assumed city-like proportions as thousands overflowed the town to witness the … games.
“The visitors began arriving as early as Friday morning and within a matter of hours every available bit of lodging space was occupied within the town and farmers w -

Reevely: Ontario's new carbon-tax challenge opens new front in Tory fight against federal Liberals
Ontario is launching its own legal fight against the federal government’s plan to impose carbon taxes on provinces that don’t already have them, following a case Saskatchewan filed earlier this year.
“Our government will be launching our own challenge of the Trudeau Liberal carbon tax at the Ontario Court of Appeal,” Attorney General Caroline Mulroney said in a Thursday news conference with Environment Minister Rod Phillips. In fact, she later clarified, it had already fi -
Renovation Transformation: Foodie designer creates dream kitchen for trained chef
You’ve probably heard the phrase you eat to live or live to eat. Self-proclaimed foodie Deirdre Jorssen identifies with the latter.
Jorssen is a designer at OakWood Design Centre, an award-winning custom home builder and renovation firm in Ottawa. Her passion for food influences her work and was the driving force behind a recent full-scale kitchen renovation in a family home near Elgin Street.
“To be a kitchen designer and to love food goes hand in hand,” says Jorssen. “I -
Civic holiday on Monday: What's open and closed in Ottawa
Before heading out on the town or running errands this civic holiday Monday — celebrated in Ottawa as Colonel By Day — here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed.
Keep in mind, Monday isn’t an official statutory holiday, so there are fewer closures than you might expect. When in doubt, or if your business/facility/service of choice isn’t listed here, call ahead.
And remember: Quebec doesn’t observe the civic holiday so it’s business -
Jim Watson disavows earlier wish for smaller city council
Mayor Jim Watson says he no longer wishes for a smaller city council in Ottawa — a position he previously campaigned on.
Watson’s change of tune, which he attributes to lessons gleaned from eight years on the job, comes in the wake of a proposed shake-up at Toronto City Hall. There, Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s new government wants to drastically cut the size of city council from 47 to 25 seats ahead of the Oct. 22 municipal election.
“What’s happening with the elect -
Adam: Mayoral candidate Clive Doucet wants a city council unafraid 'to express itself'
Clive Doucet is not a man for grand gestures, however noble, and he wants you to know that he is in the mayor’s race to win – not just to elevate the debate or shake things up. But over coffee at a Glebe café, Doucet said he’ll quit the race if he doesn’t find broad support across the city, especially in the suburbs. He’s not running just for the sake of it.
“I am running to win and if I sense after two or three weeks that I’m not going to win, I -

Canadian troops headed for Iraq to provide training to deal with IEDs
A small contingent of soldiers from the Canadian Army’s 4 Engineer Support Regiment in New Brunswick left for Iraq Wednesday to provide training for Iraqi forces.

Vance’s plan to buy U.S.-made uniforms for Canadian military raises issues
My Postmedia colleague Christie Blatchford reports the Canadian military is looking for a new camouflage uniform for its 95,000 regular and reserve force members – potentially at a cost of as much as $500 million to taxpayers.
Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance favours one originally developed for the U.S. military, according to documents obtained by Blatchford.
