And they’re off.
Nominations for mayor, city councillor and school board trustee closed Friday afternoon.
Seeking his third term as mayor post-amalgamation, Jim Watson’s name will appear alongside the names of 11 other men when Ottawa voters head to the polls in October (Watson previously served one term as mayor in pre-amalgamation Ottawa).
Among the challengers is Clive Doucet, the former Capital ward councillor who faced off against Watson in the 2010 mayoral election and placed t

Unions council predicts province could cut more than 700 Ottawa hospital jobs
Between 748 and 1,643 hospital jobs could be cut if Ontario’s new Progressive Conservative government fulfills its campaign promises, according to projections by the hospital division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
According to calculations by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, which represents 35,000 provincial health care workers ranging from nurses to maintenance staff, Ottawa also faces losing between 84 and 184 permanent hospital beds, as well as 55 flu seasonal -
Magee House, currently short one wall, to be partially demolished
The city is moving quickly to deal with the Magee House, which is currently missing the better part of its west-facing wall, by knocking part of the building down.
Since the wall collapsed Tuesday, engineers have been puzzling about what, exactly, to do with the parts of the building that remain standing. The building has been standing on its own for the time being, but since the precise cause of the collapse hadn’t been determined, the integrity of the building was understandably viewed w -

Police charge former Scout leader with gross indecency following historical investigation
Following a historical investigation, Ottawa police have charged a former Scout leader at a local church with gross indecency involving two alleged victims, and said it’s possible others may also have been victimized.
The incidents date back to 1977, police said, when the male victims were eight and nine years old, and came into contact with the suspect. He was a Scout leader at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Alta Vista Drive from 1972 to 1977.
The victims came forward to police 40 -

Police ask for help in search for robbery suspect after two Sparks Street banks hit minutes apart
Ottawa police asked for the public’s help Friday to identify a young male robbery suspect after two Sparks Street banks reported the theft of undisclosed amounts of cash from behind their counters.
Officers responded to a robbery in progress at 9 a.m. Thursday in the 1-100 block of Sparks. After entering a bank and demanding money, the suspect jumped over the counter and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
No injuries were reported.
Moments later, another bank in the 100 -
Reevely: A good fight for mayor is good for Ottawa — and even for Jim Watson
Mayor Jim Watson owes former Capital councillor Clive Doucet a thank-you for registering to run against him this fall.
The vote is Oct. 22 and when nominations closed Friday afternoon, the eight-year incumbent faced 11 challengers. Only Doucet has held office before. Perhaps the next best-known is Vanier garage operator Bruce McConville, who’s run for council twice and lost.
Doucet’s got a solid base among urban left-wingers, having served four terms for his downtown ward, but he als -

New policy to put an end to Canadian soldiers buying their own boots
Some Canadian soldiers will no longer have to buy their own boots as a new policy introduced Friday provides them with cash for combat footwear.
The Canadian military provides boots to its personnel but for at least the last decade there has been a problem with getting enough footwear and some soldiers have been using their own money to buy combat boots, Lt. Col. Robin Chenard, a staff officer working on logistics operations for the Canadian Army, told Postmedia.
But the military is hoping its n -

Devastating Cornwall fire brings out the best in many
CORNWALL — The devastating fire that claimed three buildings in Cornwall Thursday night also brought out the best in some people.
The fire was called in at about 6:30 p.m., after breaking out in a small apartment building on Montreal Road and spreading to an apartment building on Alice Street and a furniture store.
Firefighters remained at the scene Friday morning putting out hotspots.
Don Smith of Cornwall was across town when he noticed the heavy smoke coming from the city’s east e -
Don't respond to email scammers who show user's old login data and demand ransom: Police
The Ottawa Police Service is warning residents not to reply to a scam that sees fraudsters use old Internet login credentials as leverage to collect payment from victims.
Police said the scam involves a victim receiving an anonymous email from someone saying they have been spying on the victim’s computer. To make matters worse, the fraudster provides the victim with old login credentials. Police believe that the login credentials, which would include a username and password, were taken fro -
How to tell dangerous wild parsnip from other plants
Summer is a time when two common roadside plants are blooming, and people sometimes mix them up. That might not matter with most wild flowers, but one of these can be harmful.
Wild parsnip and Queen Anne’s lace are both members of the carrot family. Both have clusters of tiny flowers arranged in a circle that is mostly flat on top. And if you just look at photos of them, it can be hard to tell the difference.
Why does it matter?
The sap of wild parsnip can cause chemical burns if you are o -
Pearson: On coming out of the closet, Hannah Gadsby and me
“The closet, for me,” admits Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby in her staggering monologue, Nanette, “was no easy thing to come out of.”
Gadsby and I both turned 40 this year, so even though we grew up thousands of kilometres apart — she in northwestern Tasmania, me in southwestern Ontario — I can relate to the sentiment.

Coming out has never been a single act or declaration for me, but rather a life-long series of vignettes.

Police seek to ID of 'person of interest'
West-end detectives are asking the public to help them identify a “person of interest” in an ongoing probe but are staying tight-lipped about why.
The man, bearded and pictured in what appears to be an orange American Eagle hoodie, is described as Caucasian, 20 to 35 years old, with a medium build and tanned complexion.
Otherwise, “no information will be released at this time to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” police said.

Former councillor Clive Doucet announces run for mayor
Clive Doucet is running for mayor.
The former Capital ward councillor and 2010 mayoral candidate arrived at the election office just after noon Friday to register. The deadline to file nomination papers is 2 p.m.
“I just decided at 7:30 last night. I was ready to go if no one came forward,” Doucet said outside the elections office on Cyrville Road.
There were actually 11 others on the ballot when he registered, including incumbent Jim Watson.
Doucet said he expects a “scrap&rdq -
Queensway crash under Harmer pedestrian bridge part of busy afternoon for responders
Paramedics were assessing patients on the scene of a crash on the eastbound Highway 417 near Parkdale Avenue just before noon Friday.
They were called to a two-vehicle collision at 11:41 a.m. that left one of the vehicles perched on the wall of the median.
It happened right below the soon-to-be-demolished Harmer Avenue pedestrian bridge and traffic was backed up to almost Preston Street.
No word on injuries. The incident is now listed as cleared by the city’s traffic centre.

Ottawa's council won't be shrunk like Toronto's because Ottawa's smaller, Doug Ford says
Ottawa’s council doesn’t need shrinking because it’s either not as big a city as Toronto is or because it’s a much more complicated one, depending whom you ask in the provincial government.
Premier Doug Ford made the first argument at a Friday-morning news conference where he revealed his plans to cut the number of Toronto city councillors from a planned 47 to 25 in this fall’s election, by drawing new wards that line up with provincial and federal riding boundaries -

Kurl: The window slowly closes on carbon-pricing harmony
Those were the days: that heady spring of 2015 when a majority of Canadians didn’t need (not-yet-legal) marijuana to feel the pleasant warmth and euphoria associated with majority support for national carbon pricing. Such a good idea it seemed at the time, the federal Liberals incorporated it into their ultimately successful campaign platform.
Now, six months before Justin Trudeau’s government is set to implement a national plan to set a price on carbon emissions in provinces that do -

Two beaches reopen on good-looking Friday, but things could turn soggy
Two city beaches reopened Friday morning, as the day dawned clear and bright.
Britannia and Westboro beaches were back in operation after being closed for the usual E. coli concerns following heavy rainstorms. Unfortunately, Mooney’s Bay and the two Petrie Island beaches remain closed.
In Gatineau, Lac-Beauchamp beach was back in operation, but Aylmer’s Parc des Cèdres Beach requires a bit more time to clear up.

OC Transpo passenger makes own stop by jumping out window
An OC Transpo passenger went full-on Dukes of Hazzard in front of Parliament Hill, leaping out of a stopped bus through the window.
A fellow passenger posted a video on Reddit Thursday of the grey-haired man’s athletic feat.

There are many reasons for this trend, from affordability to availability to lifestyle choices, and it means builders are now having trouble keeping up with demand.
“Townhomes are flying off the shelf; builders can’t release them fast enough,” noted Cheryl Rice, Ottawa presid -

'I had no idea a mosquito could change my life': Ottawa woman still feeling after effects of West Nile
Mary Sharina says she was enjoying a glass of wine with a friend in her garden in 2012 when everything changed.
At first, she didn’t think much of it, just a mosquito bite that itched and left a small red welt on her ankle. But, over the days that followed, she began to experience more ominous signs that something was wrong.
Mosquitoes can carry the West Nile virus, an infection that, in severe cases, can cause encephalitis, meningitis, other long-term health problems or even death. (And s -

Adam: No, we don't need political parties in civic elections
It is too bad that columnist Randall Denley, who wrote on the topic in Wednesday’s Citizen, has changed his mind and is now supporting political parties in municipal government – all because the city can’t find a credible candidate to challenge Mayor Jim Watson.
That’s not a good enough reason to tear down a municipal election system that has served Ottawa residents well for more than 150 years. Party politics, whether based on civic engagement or national/provincial affi -

TV news programs seem to be in a race to the bottom, desperately trivializing the news in order to attract and keep our ev -
