What could the PC government’s review of supervised injection sites mean in Ottawa?
Local safe-injection organizations say they trust the science-proven merit of their services will win the day as the Ontario government moves to review its safe-injection policies.
Ontario health minister Christine Elliott announced this week that the PC government will be reviewing the policy towards supervised injection sites to determine whether or not the programs “have merit” and are worth continuing to fund.
“We need to take a look at the evidence and understand what the -

'Courage and passion': Twenty female scientists profiled in new museum exhibit
Curator Cindy Stelmackowich gestured to the photographs of trailblazing women surrounding her, each profiling a story of remarkable scientific endeavour found in a new exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Ottawa River's big, gross gulp: city's combined sewers dump in 340M litres of diluted sewage
Heavy rain has caused more than 340 million litres of diluted sewage to run into the Ottawa River this week.
The sewage is from the City of Ottawa’s older combined sewers, which carry both raw sewage and stormwater. When the sewers fill with rain, the overflow goes to the river.
The city recorded about 320 million litres of overflow during the rainfalls on Wednesday. There was about 22 million litres of overflow on Monday.
On top of that, the city recorded 274,000 litres of raw sewage spil -

Dead Carleton prof's pension case goes to Supreme Court
Can Carleton University reclaim $500,000 in pension money paid to a dead political science professor whose body went undiscovered in the woods for five years?
That’s the question that now faces the Supreme Court of Canada after it agreed Thursday to hear the unusual case, which centres on the untimely death of professor George Roseme.

Developer pulls application to turn part of Stonebridge Golf Course into subdivision
A developer has dropped its plan to dig up part of a Barrhaven golf course for a new subdivision.
Mattamy Homes had filed an application at city hall to build its Phase 16 subdivision. It proposed using 9.4 hectares of the 73-hectare golf course for 158 homes. The developer would have redesigned some of the course, which would become a Par 68 instead of the current Par 71. Mattamy owns the golf course.
The application has been controversial in the Stonebridge community, whose residents have paid -

Chamberfest Preview: Friendship (and even the occasional fight) gird Ariel Quartet's passionate playing
When violist Jan Grüning auditioned to join the Ariel Quartet in 2011, socializing came before setting bows on strings.
“I came the night before and we started by having dinner and hanging out and playing board games and starting to get to know each other,” Grüning says. “The next morning we started reading music.
“So it started from a social component. It kind of took the pressure off,” he says. “You see that there’s stuff to talk about, -

Sobiesiak: Perils of step-parenting don't come with much protection
In the last year, I’ve had profanities screamed at me in public, and also behind closed doors. I’ve been ostracized, dismissed, and belittled simply because of who I am. I am hated simply for existing. Last time I checked, that sort of behaviour was in violation of any zero tolerance policy I’ve ever come across, most importantly, the Canadian Human Rights Act.
So why is this happening to me? There are many unique characteristics that define an individual. One, which seems to b -
Antiques: Value of field geology laboratory kit is rock solid
Q: Today whilst sorting through my late father’s monumental accumulation, I came across this Letcher blowpipe set that has me flummoxed as to what to do with it. It came from my great-uncle’s, housed in the original wooden box 27 x 12 x 8 cm (10.75 x 4.75 x 3.25 inches). Inside there appears to be all the wee tools and some damage to the label. I’d like to pass it on to someone who would appreciate it. Such a fascinating example of the ingenuity and solid basic science training -

After the deluge, burn ban lifted in Ottawa
Ottawa Fire Services has lifted the open-air fire ban after days of rain on what were tinder-dry conditions.
But they’re reminding people that they need a burn permit for any such fire in Ottawa.
Burn bans may also still be in effect in other areas so “always check with local fire department before lighting a fire.”

Today's letters: Great writing and level-headed journalism
Bravo to Janice Kennedy for mature writing
Re: Early Edition – Greer and Grey and an open mind, July 23.
What a pleasant surprise as I turned to page A9 of Monday’s Citizen. Janice Kennedy is back!
I can’t begin to say how much I enjoyed her article on two of my favourite persons, namely, Germaine Greer and Deborah Grey. Well, let me rephrase that – ONE of my favourite persons, Deb Grey. Forget Germaine Greer as of today and, although I never shared Conservative Deb Grey& -

Trump says – once again – that the F-35 is invisible
U.S. President Donald Trump has spent part of the week touting Lockheed Martin’s F-35.
On Monday the aircraft was drafted into Trump’s trade war with America’s key allies. The F-35 was parked on the White House driveway as Trump touted “Made in America” products.
The campaign is part of the Trump administration’s pushing back aggressively against critics who say his punishing tariffs on imported goods threaten to harm the U.S. economy.
Trump has vowed to force -

Gatineau man arrested on child-porn charges
A Gatineau man was arrested on multiple child porn-related charges on Wednesday.
Ottawa police said that Patrick Clement, 36, was arrested after an investigation, started and conducted primarily by an American Homeland Security undercover officer based in Tampa, Fla., in which he allegedly communicated with officers posing as a 12-year-old girl.
When it was determined that the man was in the Ottawa area, the investigation was turned over to Ottawa police, who continued their undercover communica
