A pair of women claiming to need cash to feed their hungry kids are being moved along the Highway 401 corridor to solicit cash, Prescott OPP warns.
The women, holding a cardboard sign, appeared near businesses just off the highway on July 15 and 25, and have also turned up in Tillsonburg, Trenton and Gananoque, police said.
“The females are being transported to numerous locations off the 401 corridor to solicit money,” the Prescott detachment warned.

Orléans man arrested on a terrorism peace bond
A young Orléans man with a history of schizophrenia was nabbed by the RCMP last month over fears he would engage in terrorism.
Abdulmuti Elmi’s episodes have landed him in trouble with the law in the past but now he’s landed on the radar of the RCMP’s counter-terrorism unit and in June he was arrested on a terrorism peace bond.
The Mounties say they feared Elmi was about to commit terrorism. He was planning to leave the country to wage jihad abroad, according to swo -

Reevely: Killing Ontario's cap-and-trade system will cost only $5M, environment minister says
Ontario will compensate only a handful of companies that bought carbon-emissions permits in the cap-and-trade system the new Progressive Conservative government is killing, Environment Minister Rod Phillips announced Wednesday.
The provincial government will keep several billion dollars that it made selling those permits under the previous Liberal government, that means, and not spend it on the environmental programs and projects for which it was intended. They’ll have something like $2 bi -

Virtual reality therapy treats anxiety with a dose of virtual demons
Patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or other anxiety conditions are finding real solutions in a virtual world.
Stéphane Bouchard, Canada Research Chair in clinical cyberpsychology, demonstrated for a few media visitors Wednesday in Gatineau how a virtual tour of an animated space can help people battle their personal demons.
Bouchard, a researcher at the University of Quebec in the Outaouais, is also president of private clinic In Virtuo in Gatineau.

Where Ottawa's tech industry stacks up in North America: Not quite as robust as advertised
At first glance, a survey published Wednesday of 50 North American cities appears to have astonishingly good news for the capital region’s tech sector.
CBRE, a commercial real estate firm, concluded that Ottawa ranked first in high-tech employment growth during the past four years. In 2017, we also lived in the most tech-intensive city on the continent — defined as tech employment as a percentage of total workers — ahead of California’s Silicon Valley and miles ahead of B -

Wet Wednesday smashes local rainfall record
Environment Canada ended its rainfall warning Wednesday afternoon, but not before a deluge soaked the city and smashed a local record in the process.
Amounts of 50 to 85 mm had already been reported across parts of Eastern Ontario including the Ottawa area Wednsday morning.
The downpour shattered Environment Canada’s local rainfall record for July 25 of 41.1 mm, set in 1969.
By 2 p.m., a total of 69.4 mm had fallen at the Ottawa airport and a whopping 91.5 mm at the Central Experimental Fa -
Navan woman who inspired a region succumbs to cancer
Heaven could not wait.
Sarah Taylor-Haddad, who warmed and inspired hearts with her enduring grace in a determined battle against cancer, died on Monday, the same day she was scheduled to fly to Germany for further regional chemotherapy treatments.
Taylor, 30, the subject of a highly successful GoFundMe campaign this summer, was set back last week when a seizure led to cancer being discovered in the fluid of her skull. She received radiation treatments at The Ottawa Hospital but then suffered mo -
Adam: Doug Ford needs to wind down cap-and-trade in an orderly way
Wherever you stand on Rob Ford’s decision to kill Ontario’s cap-and-trade program, the cancellation of the green renovation rebates is causing such consternation among small businesses and homeowners that the premier must rethink the implementation.
At the very least, Ford has to extend the Oct. 31 deadline the government has set for all work associated with the rebates to completed. Window manufacturers and installers in Ottawa and across the province fear that the cancellation of t -

McCandless: Canada should share the wealth for research more widely
As Canadians, we rightly pride ourselves on being a nation of innovation and scientific inquiry, and have benefited from the national prosperity and well-being that these attributes have traditionally afforded us.
At a time when scientific efforts are being underfunded, maligned and even discredited across the globe, investment in the sciences is always welcome. As Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s budget revealed a few months ago, -
OC Transpo reduces planned layoffs to 345 when LRT starts
OC Transpo has managed to cut down the number of planned layoffs, but the top boss says the transit agency is still hitting its worker reduction targets ahead of launching the $2.1-billion LRT system.
“We haven’t upsized the organization,” said John Manconi, general manager of transportation, on Wednesday.
Transpo is cutting 345 staff starting Dec. 1. Layoff notices went out this week. The transit service has roughly 2,400 unionized workers.

Glavin: Spare some compassion for Toronto shooter's parents
To try to look on the bright side, maybe the reason Sunday’s Danforth shooting rampage has pushed some people into an abyss of hysteria is that Toronto truly is one of the world’s great peaceable cities, and the horror of what happened has been just too much of a shock. Maybe it’s got something to do with the ubiquity of rancid disinformation and malicious pseudo-news these days that a meanness and heartlessness so quickly intruded into what was, in the early goings, a moment o -

Former foreign correspondent Frank Koller returns to his first love, music
Before Frank Koller, a former CBC radio foreign correspondent, was reporting from the Tiananmen Square protests in the late 1980s or from Lower Manhattan in September 2001, he was a thriving musician in Ottawa.
Those with sufficiently long memories may recall Koller as a guitarist who worked four decades ago at the National Arts Centre and the Central Canada Exhibition, who put out the pop-jazz record Single Malt and who was the musical director for the July 1 show on Parliament Hill.

When OPP and Ministry of Transportation officers pulled an “unsafe” tractor-trailer off the road July 19 they found an unexpected payload.
They seized more than 33,000 pounds of contraband tobacco which represents tax evasion worth $5 million.
Police and MTO had teamed up to enforce commercial motor vehicle laws on Highway 401 in the Brockville area. They pulled over the eastbound truck at about 4 p.m.
“Further investigation” turned up the tobacco.

Algonquin College back on grid as source of outage ID'ed
Algonquin College’s city campus has been hooked back up to the city’s power grid after workers discovered that the cause of outages that started Friday wasn’t aging infrastructure but a quick-to-replace part at the power plant.
That meant that the fix wasn’t “major and prolonged work” as feared but instead immediate work to replace a failed component in the main high-voltage switch gear in the central plant, college president Cheryl Jensen said in a stat -
Ontario parolee arrested after hours-long standoff in Gatineau
Three people were arrested Tuesday after an hours-long standoff as Gatineau police helped the OPP arrest a man accused of breaching parole.
Gatineau police were called in to help at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
They put up a security perimeter around a Mondoux Street address that completely closed a portion of the street.

Industry concerns about Cormorant modernization pushed aside – project to proceed
In May, the federal government announced that it had decided on modernizing the RCAF’s search and rescue helicopters rather than take another route, such as purchasing new aircraft. Leonardo was selected to upgrade its Cormorant search-and-rescue helicopters and provide seven additional aircraft.
The government doesn’t have full details on what this will cost taxpayers as various options have to be sorted out. But it gave an estimate of the project as between $1 billion and $5 billio -
House Works: Make friends with your cottage's water system
Dealing with a seasonal water system is the least enjoyable part of owning a lakeside home or rural getaway, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
The frustration and uncertainty endured draining water pipes in the fall and filling them again each spring is something that Canadian plumber Brian Feeney set out to change. He lives and works in Ontario’s cottage country, and six years ago he got fed up watching property owners struggle (and sometimes fail) with seasonal water systems.

Weekend drowning of Jamaican boy, 7, at Sandbanks 'preventable,' critic says

A former lifeguard, Watts worked at Sandbacks, about 290 kilometres south of Ottawa, and other regional beaches before their lifeguarding programs were cancelled. He’s been advocating for their return e -

Today's letters: Toronto shooting, healthy lifestyles
Two urgent lessons from Toronto’s shooting
Re: He was trying to kill people, July 24.
Stripping away all of the political posturing that follows such incidents, this case identifies two related issues that require immediate attention: the mental health system and the registration of weapons by mentally disabled persons.
The mental health system failed Faisal Hussain and the gun registration system (assuming the gun was registered) just plain failed. These are issues that governments have k -
