Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Ottawa region
Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Ottawa area on Tuesday, as the city braces for another heavy storm.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing torrential rain,” said Environment Canada in a statement, adding that “conditions will be favourable for severe thunderstorms into this evening as a warm and humid tropical air mass remains over Eastern Ontario.”

Reevely: Ontario's refugee-claimant bill hits $200M, MacLeod testifies on the Hill
Ontario’s bill for refugee claimants is up to $200 million, the province’s social-services minister, Lisa MacLeod, said Tuesday, in a testy Parliament Hill committee hearing that spent much of its time in an argument over whether it’s OK to describe some crossings of the Canadian border as “illegal.”
The Ontario government is continuing to crunch numbers, finding new expenses to attribute to asylum claimants who come into Canada between official “points of ent -
Chamberfest preview: Violin virtuoso Roby Lakatos brings 'unorthodox Gypsy fusion music' to Ottawa
It’s a good thing that Roby Lakatos persevered.
Growing up in the late 1960s in Budapest, Lakatos was the latest addition to a musical family thick with Romani violinists. Generations back, one of his ancestors was János Bihari, a composer who influenced Brahms and Liszt. There was no question that young Roby would pick up a child-sized violin as soon as he was able, imitate the sounds he heard in the house, and eventually go to music school.
“It was a pain, you know? I d -
Man in Hill incident sought for alleged assault the day before
Ottawa police say no charges will be laid against a 24-year-old man in relation to an incident involving a Ceremonial Guard on Parliament Hill on Monday — but he does face charges relating to an attack on another man in the south end on Sunday.
Police had originally stated that Jesse Mooney was arrested and charged with assault and breach of probation following an incident that took place Monday morning on the lawn of Parliament Hill during the Changing of the Guard parade, a popular touri -
Pre-Confederation lighthouse near Brockville destroyed by fire after lightning strike
A longstanding piece of Canadiana was forever lost on Monday evening when the Cole Shoal lighthouse, just west of Brockville in the Thousand Islands, burned to the ground after presumably being struck by lightning. It was the last remaining of nine Canadian lighthouses built in the Thousand Islands in 1856.
“It was no longer a navigation aid, but it’s certainly a piece of history,” says conservation biologist and historian Mary Alice Snetsinger, who has extensively researched a -

Chamberfest preview: Z.E.N. and the art of forming a supergroup trio
The talent scouts at BBC Radio 3 were onto something a few years ago when they came up with the bright idea that pianist Zhang Zuo, violinist Esther Yoo and cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan should join forces.
Chosen as “New Generation Artists” by the classical radio station, the prodigious young musicians were enrolled in a two-year program that gave them opportunities to perform and record. Most pivotal among them was the suggestion that the three team up to record Brahms’ Pia -
Suspect arrested in Hill incident was already sought for alleged assault the day before
A 24-year-old Ottawa man has been accused of taking an unprovoked swing at a man he knew on Bridle Path Drive the day before he was charged in an incident involving the Ceremonial Guard, city police said Tuesday.
Police had already been looking for Jesse Mooney, 24, when he was arrested and later charged with assault and breach of probation in what Ottawa police say was an “isolated incident” on Parliament Hill Monday morning.
On Tuesday, police said that Mooney was charged with -

Cohen: Celebrating the rhythms of a Canadian summer
LAKE TEMAGAMI, Ontario – For days, the fires of Temagami flared. On the evening we arrived, under a slanting, molten sun, the place was otherworldly.
It had not rained hard for weeks. The forest was a tinderbox. There was a smell of smoke in the air and a curtain of haze but no flames, which were far away.
That was Tuesday. On Sunday, just two days before, our neighbours on Outlet Bay reported that the smoke and ash was too hard on the eyes and lungs; at 8 p.m., they fled.

Congratulations to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson on his re-election to another four-year term. Nominations don’t close until Friday, but no significant challenger is going to come forward, so Watson is as good as in.
What will the re-elected mayor offer in his third term? We don’t know yet, but it really doesn’t matter, because we have already chosen him by default.
It’s a pretty sad situation when the province’s second-largest city has no serious race for mayor. That&rsq -

Labaky: If police are to succeed, community must play an active role
Sir Robert Peel served twice as prime minister of the United Kingdom and in 1829 he established the first Metropolitan Police Force for London at Scotland Yard. However, we remember him today as the father of modern policing through “Peel’s Principles of Policing.”
The Seventh Principle remains the one most frequently quoted: “Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public an -

Rain raises no-swim advisory at all beaches, severe T-storm watch for region
Make that two reasons not to take a dip.
Public health officials have issued no-swim advisories at all city beaches because E. coli levels are likely to exceed provincially established standards due to heavy rain.
Water tests take at least 18 hours to process in the lab so no-swim advisories are issued based on water sample results from the previous day and the likely impact of rainfall and bird activity.

Feared funnel cloud just a rain shaft, experts conclude
During Monday night’s deluge, Ottawa weather-watchers spotted what looked like a funnel cloud, which can become a tornado.
Thankfully it was likely just what’s known as a “rain shaft” – a common phenomenon but one that we rarely get to see from just the right perspective.

Priced at $700,000, dedicated fans can now purchase the location for the band’s “Poets” music video, which memorably features the late Gord Downie weaving between dozens of cats crawling over an Elm Street home’s floors and counters while the Hip perform as “The Rodents.”
The house held a Guinness World Record for keeping nearly 700 cats inside. -

Cross-town pursuit of stolen car on weekend turns up robbery suspect
An RCMP officer spotted a suspicious vehicle and pursued it across town over the weekend, netting a stolen vehicle and a robbery suspect who was finally collared after a police dog sniffed him out in the woods.
It was at 1 a.m. Saturday at Montreal Road and the Vanier Parkway that the Mountie noticed the vehicle which a computer search revealed was stolen and was linked to a number of robberies. The officer started a traffic stop but the vehicle took off.

Sticky spell follows Monday's record rain, fire ban remains in effect
After a muggy Monday with record-setting rainfall, more showers or thunderstorms loom Tuesday and the forecast high will feel like 36.
A total of 43 mm of rain fell at the Ottawa airport Monday as the mercury nudged 32 C, Environment Canada reports. The previous record for rain was 35.2 mm set in 1994. Beating the July 24 record doesn’t seem likely: 59 mm fell in 1987.
There will be no hot tubbing for a while at this home, after Monday’s high winds sent massive branches crashing -

Charity opens new Ottawa home for human-trafficking survivors
On the wall of a cozy room in the basement of a unique new transition home for women fleeing the cruel grip of human traffickers is a handmade sign that reads “Behind every successful woman is herself.”
It’s the kind of message the young women who pass through this place of refuge will need to hear as they rebuild their lives after the trauma of being forced to work in the sex trade.
“I believe we’re changing lives here,” said Wendy Gee, executive director of -
ARMCHAIR MAYOR: It's time to waive the flags
This fall, citizens of Ottawa elect a new city council. To help local candidates as they campaign, the Citizen asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place – without necessarily breaking the bank. Today, Paul Gregory Leroux flags one area for improvement.

In 1992, I argued before Mayor Jim Durrell and municipal councillors that Pride Day should officially be proclaimed, and the rainbow flag flown outside City Hall. Now fast-forward a quarter of a century. In Ma -
