Rolling Barber wheels into town, offering free haircuts to those in need
Lynn Kelly doesn’t like to look in the mirror much.
“It’s not as bad as it used to be,” she said. “I hated what I saw.”
For Kelly, her reflection was a reminder of where she was in life; she felt inadequate and it was painful to see a person whose life felt out of control.
She came downtown on a whim Sunday, and went by Centre 454 on King Edward Avenue, which offers a day program for the homeless or those without consistent housing.
She ended up, of all places -

Algonquin College to resume all classes Monday after power outage
All classes and activities at Algonquin College’s Ottawa campus in the west end will resume Monday, but heating and cooling systems won’t be running at full capacity, the college announced Sunday afternoon after a large-scale power outage Friday shuttered much of the campus for the weekend.
Some areas of the Ottawa campus continued to operate on reduced power Sunday.

Science of summer: Those unbreakable, unbeakable loons
The female loon on a Wisconsin lake was still swimming, looking for all the world like one of those Second World War photos of an aircraft shot full of holes that somehow made it home.
The upper half of the animal’s beak was bent sharply upward at a bizarre angle, raising all kind of questions: How could it catch fish? How could it eat if it did catch something?
Yet the female was surviving, teaching even veteran scientists a lesson in just how tough these birds are.
Or as Piper puts it, & -

Reevely: As bad as the Holland Avenue bike detour was on paper, it's worse in real life
The temporary bike route on Holland Avenue seemed like a bad idea when the city was thinking it up. As it’s turned out in real life, it’s worse.
This is a short stretch of north-south road that passes under Highway 417, and it matters because there’s a good chance somebody will die there.
For two years, the nearby Harmer Avenue footbridge over the highway will be out of action while it’s replaced. It’s the choice route for kids who live south of the highway who go t -

Architect John Donkin’s Old Ottawa South home is full of surprises: a traditional brick-clad beauty on the outside and an ultra modern marvel on the inside. But there is nothing jarring about the design that merges two different eras into one.
With almost 30 years in the business, Donkin has built a solid reputation for his masterful modern infills and renovations throughout the capital and has a shelf full of design awards from the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association to prove -

Egan: Judge kills door-to-door contract, saves woman $8K for unwanted water softener
In February 2017, a door-to-door company called Ontario Safety Standards sold Carol Baas a water softener she didn’t need, at $59 a month for 10 years, an agreement that looked both bad and iron-clad.
Only 41 days later, before she received her first bill, a lien was slapped on her east-end property for any future unpaid amounts, potentially in excess of $8,000.
First Baas got mad — “kicked myself in the pants” — then Baas went about getting even.
