Everyone from beginners to sculptors kept chipping away at it on Saturday during Day 2 of the Canadian Stone Carving Festival on Sparks Street.
The work was scheduled to continue on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m., leading up to the grand finale at 2 p.m. Carving is to conclude at 1 p.m., allowing for an hour of viewing before a public auction of the finished pieces begins. Money raised through the auction will be donated to Ottawa Innercity Ministries, the festival stated on its website.

Algonquin College activities knocked out by power outage
Programs and activities at Algonquin College were suspended until further notice Saturday following a power outage Friday night.
The exceptions are the college’s ACCE building and the residence, Algonquin said in a news release.
Much of the Ottawa campus remains on emergency power, using generators.
The college has called in specialists for consultations, and said there would be an update later Saturday.
“Employees in non-essential roles are advised not to come to the campus.” -

Ottawa police get $1M federal grant to expand 'radicalization' intervention program
The federal government has announced a $1-million grant to Ottawa police to expand a program that would see officers and community groups intervene when people are at risk of radicalization.
Ottawa-area member of parliament and cabinet minister Catherine McKenna announced the funding Friday on behalf of Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale.
The grant, spread over four years, comes from the federal “community resilience fund” to expand a program with a new focus on radicalizat -

OPP reopens 130-km stretch of Hwy 17, closed by smoke from brush fire
A large stretch of Highway 17 between Mattawa and Petawawa was closed Friday as authorities battled a large brush fire.
The Ontario Provincial Police said smoke from that fire had severely reduced visibility, making the road unsafe for driving. Nearing 9:30 p.m., OPP had closed around 130 kilometres of highway.
There was no information available as to the cause of the brush fire.

Egan: Why we shouldn't fawn over footbridge named Flora
Why on earth would we name a new footbridge in central Ottawa after Flora MacDonald?
Still don’t get this one.
On July 11, Ottawa City Council was unanimous in approving the naming of the $21-million bridge (by the way, $21 million for a shortcut?) between Fifth Avenue and Clegg Street.
MacDonald, certainly, had an admirable career and is probably best-known as Canada’s first female foreign affairs minister in the government of Joe Clark. She did lots of other great stuff and has won -

Keep the street patios intact
Re: Better ‘access’ bylaw could mean last call for La Roma’s patio, July 15; and Ottawa restaurant La Roma finds patio compromise, July 18.
I was shocked and dismayed to read of the plight of La Roma restaurant, which, until this week, was facing the possibility of losing 32 of its 40 patio seats because of the city’s unwillingness to exempt it from a new bylaw requiring two metres of barrier-free access along the public sidewalk. Liew: Ontario can't ignore its obligations on refugee claimants
There’s been a lot of posturing between the Ontario Provincial Conservative government and the federal Liberal government over housing, refugee claimants and border-crossers. Let’s take a closer look at the situation and see if we can look past the rhetoric.
Our Constitution divides governing powers between the provinces and the federal government. Section 92 of the Constitution gives the provinces the power over matters of local or private nature in the province. This includes housi -
Editorial: A Spark of a plan for Ottawa's pedestrian mall
This time, will they get Sparks Street right? Let’s hope, but let’s not hold our breath.
Almost a year ago, Mayor Jim Watson pledged to play a “hands on” role in revitalizing the pedestrian mall. He announced, along with the federal government, the hiring of a consultant for a “public realm” design study of Sparks.
This month, he’s back, unveiling some first – and very modest – ideas offered through that consultation and study. The “Spa -
Small cyclist army rides to protest 'harrowing' Holland Avenue detour
A small army of cyclists took to the streets — one street, actually — on Friday night to protest what they say is a dangerous stretch of Holland Avenue, where city staff scrapped a plan for a protected bike lane and replaced it with a confusing slalom of road markings after residents complained about the loss of on-street parking.
The Harmer Avenue pedestrian bridge, recognizable to drivers as the aging footbridge that crosses over top of the 417 near Island Park Drive, is being demo -

Visiting knifemaker rock stars draw a crowd to their sharpening party
There are two different kinds of sharp. There is sharp, as in things that might hurt when you touch them, and which you are careful around because they could cut you. And then there is sharp sharp — a kind of sharpness that seems to defy the laws of physics, rendering objects infinitely, effortlessly divisible.
That second kind of sharp, that’s the kind of sharp you want in your kitchen knife. That’s the kind of sharp you get with a Japanese knife.
