'They're cowards' : OSEG working with police to identify masked flare-throwers at Ottawa Fury game
The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group is working with local police to identify a group of masked Toronto FC supporters who travelled to TD Place stadium and ignited flares, causing chaos at a Wednesday night soccer game against the Ottawa Fury FC.
“They’re cowards and they pulled masks up over their face before they lit the flares off, so that might make it difficult,” said OSEG CEO Mark Goudie Thursday afternoon. “But there’s enough people, I think, in that sup -

Ottawa party of five wins big in Friday the 13th LOTTO MAX
The fact the $60-million LOTTO MAX draw fell on Friday the 13th turned out to be a blessing rather than a curse for five guys from the Ottawa and Gatineau area.
The lucky group of friends officially became Canada’s newest multimillionaires when they claimed their jackpot for the draw on Thursday at the Ontario Lottery Corporation’s prize centre in Toronto.
The event was streamed live on Facebook. The friends, all IT professionals who have been buying tickets together fo -
Ottawa man off to jail for not testifying against brother-in-law gangster
Nobody likes testifying in court, let alone as the prosecution’s star witness at your brother-in-law’s murder trial.
Ottawa’s Ali Abdul-Hussein, an accessory after-the-fact in a 2006 gangland killing, feared his brother-in-law so much that he considered going into the witness-protection program but declined because his brother refused to join him in a new life under a new identity, and far removed from Nawaf Al-Enzi.
Too afraid to testify against his brother-in-law, Hussein ski -

Injured moose on Queensway was shot
The Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed that its officers shot a young moose that wandered onto Highway 417 in the middle of the Thursday morning commute.
Jolanta Kowalski, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said officials consulted a veterinarian and, given the extent of the animal’s injuries, a decision was made to euthanize it.

Reevely: Tories stuck solving imaginary sex-ed problem and have only themselves to blame
Since there’s nothing really wrong with the health curriculum for Ontario’s elementary schools, the Progressive Conservatives are having a heck of a time explaining how they’re going to fix it.
Education Minister Lisa Thompson has ducked for days, unable to specify problems in the curriculum that need fixing.
“We have heard from tens of thousands of parents who are uncomfortable,” she said in question period the other day. “But do you know what really matters, -

Troops warned about driving habits on Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles
Defence Watch has been told about concerns being raised about the brakes on the Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle fleet.
But the Department of National Defence says the issue isn’t about the brakes but how the vehicles are being driven during training.
“Vehicles in the TAPV fleet have not been quarantined, though we have investigated a few incidents involving stopping distances,” DND spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier explained to Defence Watch.

Plowman: Why Canada should return to true Cabinet government
Before the last provincial election I was asked, “Are you going to vote for Doug Ford?”
I replied no, that I lived in Ottawa and Ford was running in a Toronto riding. I said that I planned to vote for the most qualified candidate in my riding, which I did, and was pleased when she was elected.
But this simple question raised many issues in my mind.
The Fathers of Confederation, mainly Scots and French Canadians, were wily and shared caution as a virtue. They did not like to place all -
