Off-duty North Glengarry firefighter hailed for 'great save' on Byron Avenue house fire
There’s an old adage that firefighters are never off-duty, they’re just between fires.
North Glengarry Township firefighter Chris Decoste proved that to be true Tuesday morning when he smelled smoke while working around Tweedsmuir Avenue in Ottawa.
“I knew right away what it was,” Decoste said by telephone from his civilian alter-ego job as a building contractor.
“There’s a burn ban on, when you smell smoke you’ve got to check it out.”

Fourth baby killdeer recovering, making friends
The baby killdeer that hatched at Bluesfest after its parents left with their first three chicks is recovering nicely, and it has made a friend.
Nearly two weeks old now, it is out of an incubator and housed in an area with several other young birds.
“It is now eating on its own and practising its insect hunting skills, which is great, but it is still not out of the woods yet. We’re keeping a close watch on its food intake and overall condition,” says a statement on Tuesda -

After the posting was retweeted almost 300 times, the LCBO issued a state -

House Works: Your questions on wood finishes, power inverters
Choosing a power inverter
Q: Can you recommend an inverter to convert DC electricity to AC in my off-grid power system? The inverter I have is too small and has a noisy fan that runs all the time.
A: Inverters are electronic devices that allow you to run ordinary, plug-in appliances from the power of a battery. They’re a necessary part of most off-grid power systems and there’s a huge difference in the quality and cost of different inverters.
There’s also a difference in the pu -

Cohen: Trump's appeasement of Putin will drive his coming impeachment
When the U.S. House of Representatives considers a bill of impeachment against Donald Trump – as it likely will in the spring of 2019 – the first article will have been written in his meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin this week in Helsinki.
There, in an unprecedented display in great-power summit diplomacy, the president of the United States abdicated his responsibility to defend his country against an attack from a foreign power. The attack came from Russia, which use -
Editorial: Home care needs our help, badly
It’s quite a feat to mismanage an important health care sector in a way that leaves both workers and patients dissatisfied – with no real plan to fix it – but that’s the situation in Ontario home care.

Weather: Heat relief in the air for the next couple of days
Commuters and other earlybirds could feel relief in the air Tuesday, as overnight showers took some of the mugginess out of the atmosphere.
And a couple of days of moderation are in store as a “cold front” moves into the capital, the weather office says.
Forecasters are calling for a 60 per cent chance of welcome showers Tuesday morning, with a risk of thunderstorms, before the skies cleared around noon. Tuesday’s high is expected to be 28, with a bit of a “feels like&rdq -
A "most unfortunate" dispute: The hospital care of Leopold Siberg goes to court
As one symptom of the increasingly bitter dispute over his care, Leopold Siberg’s room at Saint-Vincent Hospital is now monitored by two separate camera systems.
Siberg, 89, suffers from dementia and other complex medical conditions: He has a catheter inserted into his bladder and needs help to bathe, dress, eat and move. Hospital staff must change his diaper and roll him over in bed regularly to prevent the development of sores and infections.

Today's letters: Where should we hold Canada Day party next year?
July 1 belongs to Ottawa, not Gatineau
Re: Hill’s Canada Day party might spill into Gatineau, July 12.
Because of the coming Centre Block construction, Parliament Hill will not be able to host the main Canada Day celebrations for a while. So where will the event be held? Ottawa is the capital of this country; therefore the main Canada Day event should definitely be held in Ottawa. Gatineau has played a part in the past with different aspects of Canada Day, but never for the main event.

ARMCHAIR MAYOR: Make Ottawa a 'bee' city
This fall, citizens of Ottawa elect a new city council. To help local candidates, the Citizen asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place. Today, we get the buzz from Julianne Labreche, a member of the Master Gardeners of Ottawa-Carleton.
Let’s give Ottawa official status as a Bee City, joining the growing ranks of Canadian cities already onboard.
Bees, as the saying goes, need a swarm of support these days. These important pollinators face many threats: habitat -

Hunt Club and Riverside is still the most dangerous intersection in Ottawa
For the fourth year in a row, there were more collisions at the intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive in 2017 than at any other intersection with traffic lights in the City of Ottawa.
Of 45 collisions at that intersection last year, six resulted in injuries.
Hunt Club and Riverside has actually topped the list for most collisions in seven of the past eight years and has not ranked any lower than third on the list since the city started publishing the data in 2007.
