Science of summer: Snowy owls come south … in July
Postmedia’s popular Science of Summer series is back, in its usual on-again, off-again way. Today Tom Spears looks at an oddity: Birders have found at least two dozen snowy owls summering in Southern and Eastern Ontario. It’s unprecedented and no one knows why they are here.
Snowy owls should be a long way north today, scattered from Nunavut to Alaska to northern Greenland, coming only as far south as the northern edges of Labrador and Manitoba.
Yet Bruce Di Labio recently saw one in -

The provincial capital, where many refugee claimants go, is temporarily housing some refugee claimants in college dorms, which can’t last more than a few more weeks because students will be coming back. It sent letters to other -

Shalaby: Broncos tragedy – more than 3 months later, roads no safer
With the conclusion of the RCMP investigation into the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, and the commencement of court action against truck driver Jaskirat Sidhu, many unanswered questions remain. Chief among them is if rural roads are any safer today than before the crash.

One day, the son came home from the fields to find his four -

BORN APRIL 6, 1932
Eugène Bellemare used to sit at his drawing table long after midnight to pen caricatures from the House of Commons, where he sat as Carleton-Gloucester’s MP.
“After the news at 11:30, I just sit and I draw,” he said in a 1997 interview. “I go to bed extremely late, at 1:30 or so. I can’t sleep before that. So this is my fun, late at night.”

Woman intervenes to end drunk man's harassment on bus
An Ottawa mother who confronted a young man berating and harassing a woman on an OC Transpo bus after Bluesfest says she wishes more people would stand up to such behaviour.
“A silent bystander when someone is being harmed shows people that that behaviour is appropriate,” Melissa Gervais said in a text exchange with this newspaper.
“People have this assumption that, if you speak up, you’re a rat or a snitch. When someone is being targeted and harmed in some manner, standi -

Another scorching Monday, but Tuesday will bring some relief as temperatures dip overnight
Expect more scorching weather Monday with a heat warning remaining in effect as the humidex climbs into the high 30s.
Some relief should arrive Tuesday, though when Environment Canada promises a “cold front” will blanket the region. The term is used rather loosely, though. The forecast high is 28 C during the day, which is still well above the average temperature of 26.7 C for this time of year. However, Tuesday night should dip down to 12 degrees, which is below normal. The average -

From the Archives (2005): The apprenticeship of Ray Emery
Originally published December 11, 2005
When he was in the minors, ‘Razor’ Emery was the bad boy of the Ottawa Senators organization, getting into too many on-ice fights. Now the team’s No. 2 goalie, he still has the attitude, but he’s also out to prove he has much more than that.
Ray Emery cuts a striking figure as he steps into the Ottawa Senators dressing room from the inner sanctum of the training tables in the back.

Kilgour: Trump must push Putin toward a more secure world
U.S. President Donald Trump meets Russian President Vladimir Putin today in Helsinki, Finland, a venue famed for hosting Cold War summits in 1975 (Leonid Brezhnev-Gerald Ford), 1990 (Mikhail Gorbachev-George H. W. Bush), and 1997 (Boris Yeltsin-Bill Clinton).
It is their third meeting and follows Trump’s recent meeting with leaders of 28 NATO member states in Brussels, and then a visit to the United Kingdom, whose soft Brexit plans, he cautioned, could scuttle a U.S.-U.K. free trade deal a -

In the end, exhaustion. And, one likes to believe, some shame on the part of the professionals who fed for so long off Nortel’s estate.

Since then, according to a recent E&Y update, cheques totalling $4.1 billion have gone to more than 15,000 creditors representing former Nortel employees, suppliers, lenders, pensi -
