It’s one thing for the provincial government to announce a U-turn on sex education and “discovery” math, but quite another to figure out how to make this happen in the classroom.
So don’t expect changes in curriculum when school starts in September.
Calls to school boards and one teachers’ union have produced the same response, best summarized as: “What new curriculum?”
So far, there isn’t one — only a promise in the Throne Speech to return t

City asks feds to wait on Prince of Wales Bridge appeal while repair order challenged in court
The City of Ottawa has asked the federal Liberal government to hold off on considering an appeal over the Prince of Wales Bridge, believing it has a good shot at overturning a repair order in court.
The Canadian Transportation Agency last February ordered the city to either discontinue the rail line and bridge or make them ready to use within 12 months of receiving notice.
The city thinks the order is baloney.
In documents filed in the Federal Court of Appeal on June 29, the city says the CTA do -
More than a dozen people lose their homes in devastating Barrhaven blaze
Neighbours and homeowners stood stunned on a quiet residential street in Barrhaven after a massive fire that destroyed three homes, damaged several others and left three families with nowhere to live.
Fire investigators were still unsure of the precise cause of the fire, which started around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday. Nancy Melki, who lived with her partner and four children in the first home to catch fire, said the fire started on the back deck and, fuelled by dry grass, wood and vinyl siding, quic -

Music drives noise complaints in Ottawa
Annoyed Ottawa residents — especially those in the Rideau-Vanier ward — are most peeved when it comes to others’ music.
The 2017 log of complaints for city hall’s 311 service shows that of the 10,376 noise complaints filed over the year, the most frequent beef was related to music.
More than 5,000 times, the call centre received information from people so annoyed by music, they felt compelled to make a fuss.
If it wasn’t music, it was the sound of construction that -

Reevely: Hydro One boss is out but departure deal will keep much else from changing
The deal that sent Hydro One chief executive Mayo Schmidt out the door changes almost nothing about the semi-private company other than the names on the stationery.
Schmidt, Premier Doug Ford’s scapegoat for everything that’s wrong in Ontario’s electricity system, retired this week rather than spend the summer as the premier’s punching bag. The terms of his departure are neither as good as Ford says they are, nor as bad as the opposition New Democrats say.

Ottawa family goes backstage with The Rolling Stones in Warsaw
When an Ottawa family decided to fly to Warsaw for what might be their last chance to see The Rolling Stones in concert, they never imagined they’d be plucked from the crowd for a VIP rock ’n’ roll experience.
It was all thanks to a chance encounter with “Dave,” one of the band’s managers, a still-pumped David Lapenat said Friday from his home in Wellington Village.
“It is too surreal to comprehend,” he said. “In a stadium with 70,000 people -

McDougall: Premier, it's too late to try shutting down Indigenous studies
The new Ontario government has cancelled its curriculum-writing sessions that would have updated the Ontario Ministry of Education’s “Native Studies” curriculum documents, which were first introduced in 1999.
The original documents were developed in partnership with members of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, including leaders, elders and language experts from across the province. The revised documents were to be developed in the same way. However, -
Johnstone: Here's why attacking the sex-ed curriculum is so misguided
Twenty years ago, gay marriage was illegal and Snapchat did not exist. Despite radical changes in societal views on sexuality, Ontario’s minister of education announced Wednesday that students will now be taught sex-ed using the 1998 curriculum instead of the curriculum updated by the Liberal government in 2015. This means that Ontario’s children and youth heading to school this September will be getting their sex education from a curriculum two decades out of date. Our government is -

At NeXT, celebrity chefs Lynn Crawford, Michael Blackie, Lora Kirk served waves of sumptuous food
That Wednesday night in June, all that was missing at NeXT was the TV cameras.
At the restaurant and event centre in Stittsville, the tables in the dining room had been removed so the space could be packed with 150 guests, temporarily satiated with cocktails, shrimp sandwiches, chicken liver parfait and eggs topped with XO sauce.
All eyes were fixed on the three chefs who ran the kitchen at NeXT’s most recent “3 Chefs 1 Dinner” event. They included Michael Blackie, NeXT’s -
Schools boards, teachers still in the dark on sex ed, math changes
It’s one thing for the provincial government to announce a U-turn on sex education and “discovery” math, but quite another to figure out how to make this happen in the classroom.
So don’t expect changes in curriculum when school starts in September.
Calls to school boards and one teachers’ union have produced the same response, best summarized as: “What new curriculum?”

Poll results: Doug Ford's Progressive Conservative government leaves readers divided
After Thursday’s thrown speech promised sweeping changes meant to restore public trust in the province, we posted a survey.
We wanted to know whether readers agree with the decisions made by the Progressive Conservative government since they took power — Ford has already ushered in change at Hydro One and rolled back the sex-ed curriculum. More changes, including on taxes and government waste, have been promised.

Abraham: On Doug Ford, let's stick to the facts
The U.S. president’s chief spokesperson gets kicked out of a Virginia restaurant because she is seen as aiding and abetting a serial dissembler. America finds itself divided into two polarized camps that talk past each other. Civility all but disappears.
The American media’s treatment of this recent story involving Sarah Huckabee Sanders was the latest example of a race to the bottom that began as soon as Donald Trump announced his presidential bid. From the point of view of his supp -

Editorial: Ford's focus, for now
By their nature, throne speeches are broad documents, not detailed recipe books. So it’s no surprise that the Ontario Progressive Conservative throne speech, delivered Thursday, isn’t a study in legislative minutiae.
It is, however, a clear glimpse at the worldview of Premier Doug Ford’s team: “Your new government believes that no dollar is better spent than the dollar that is left in the pockets of the taxpayer.” Contrast that with the last throne speech, delivered -
