Reevely: Amazon's new warehouse isn't a 'city-building project' but it's still a good deal for Ottawa
The deal Ottawa’s made to help Amazon open a warehouse in the east end is good, even if our politicians’ prostrations at the online retail giant’s feet are unbecoming.
Mayor Jim Watson hung an Amazon.com placard over the city crest on the podium in his office Tuesday as he and a few city councillors announced that the company will have a million-square-foot “fulfilment centre” at Boundary Road and Highway 417. The politicians goofed around with it afterward like it -

Updated: Council approves 65-storey complex near Bayview O-Train station
City council’s approval on Wednesday of a 65-storey complex near the Bayview O-Train station has cast a shadow on the city’s efforts to encourage neighbourhood visions adopted by regular folks who live in those areas.
Mayor Jim Watson said community design plans aren’t cast in stone. Any property owner can apply to city hall for a land-use change and it’s up to council to say yes or no, he said.
In the case of 900 Albert St., an overwhelming majority of council voted in f -

uOttawa says it has a 230-person gap when it comes to visible minority professors
The University of Ottawa is nowhere near to meeting its employment equity targets, acknowledging it should hire 230 visible minority professors to be on track, documents reveal.
The university, however, says budget restraints prevent it from moving quickly to do so.
The information, from October 2016, is contained in documents released by the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada through access to information and reviewed by this paper.

Council briefs: New Rideau Canal footbridge to be named after Flora MacDonald, free Elgin St. parking,
Flora Footbridge has been chosen as the name for the new crossing being built between the Glebe and Old Ottawa East.

MacDonald, the first female foreign minister, was considered a bridge-builder in her career as a politician and humanitarian.

Bruce the Moose thinks he's a horse of course
A Bourget-area farm has a new addition to its herd of Arabian horses.

Seatbelts to be mandatory on new highway buses after September 2020
Transport Canada says seatbelts will become mandatory on all large buses built after September, 2020.
The new regulations will apply to all highway coaches weighing more than 4536 kilograms.
The measures do not apply to schoolbuses, which are already meant to be designed to protect children in an accident, although operators may install them voluntarily, provided they meet Transport Canada requirements.
Smaller coaches are already required to have lap and diagonal belts.
