'I might even apply for a job': Neighbours welcome Amazon's arrival on the block
Along a rural two-lane road on the eastern edge of Ottawa, residents are preparing, with anticipation and some trepidation, to welcome a new neighbour to their quaint stretch of country – a one million-square foot distribution centre for e-commerce giant Amazon.
“I think it’s a good thing. It’s about time something happens to us here in Ottawa besides just … government,” said Ross Sabourin, a retiree who’s lived in Carlsbad Springs for 25 years.

Bagnall: What Amazon's expansion really means for the capital region
Given the sheer scale and continuing growth of Amazon, it was only a matter of time before the electronic commerce Leviathan made a serious move into the national capital region.
This is a $177.9-billion global juggernaut (2017 revenues) that last year spent $25 billion operating its fulfillment and data centres and another $22.6 billion on technology and content. (All figures U.S.) The amounts earmarked for each of these key items were up in excess of 40 per cent year over year.

Driver surrenders, charged after cyclist hit and run on Bronson Ave.
A motorist fled after striking a cyclist on Bronson Avenue late Monday night, but turned himself in at the police station hours later.
The cyclist was struck on southbound Bronson Avenue at Colonel By Drive at 11:13 p.m.
Paramedics said that the cyclist, a 24-year-old man, suffered a head injury and a fractured femur and was in serious but stable condition on arrival at the trauma centre.
Nevertheless, police said the man was conscious and able to help police with a statement while at the hospit -

Some councillors not happy city turned down revenue in deal for massive Amazon 'fulfillment centre'
Amazon’s planned distribution centre in Carlsbad Springs would see the building’s landlord get a break from paying interest on stalled development charges, prompting some councillors to slam the city for turning down revenue.
The shopping and technology behemoth made its plans for an east-Ottawa “fulfillment centre” official on Tuesday, with the massive warehouse to be built at 5371 Boundary Rd. next to Highway 417. The planning application filed at city hall calls f -

Reevely: Summer lawmaking will 'send a clear and serious message', Ontario Tories promise
In a quick summer session, the Ontario legislature will bury the cap-and-trade system for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, order an end to a long strike at York University, and kill a small wind farm in Prince Edward Country, the Progressive Conservatives’ shepherd for Queen’s Park business said Tuesday.
Todd Smith, the government house leader, said getting through the business will probably take a couple of weeks, after MPPs choose a speaker Wednesday and hear a speech from the th -

No drought yet, but be vigilant during dry spell, city and fire officials warn
No one’s saying we’re having a drought in the Ottawa region, but below average rainfall and scorching temperatures have created the perfect storm for grassfires, and the city is asking residents to be on high alert.
The National Capital Commission announced Tuesday that open fires are now banned in Gatineau Park, including the campgrounds, picnic fields and beaches, until further notice. The restriction includes charcoal BBQs, but not gas BBQs, the federal agency said.

Ottawa man acquitted in vicious beating case of drug-dealing paraplegic
Sometimes a police case can have all the markings of a solid investigation only for it to fall apart in court.
In the case against Tyler Brazeau — tried for a vicious July 1, 2015 home invasion of a paraplegic who was beaten within inches of life — Ottawa police had plenty of evidence, circumstantial and real, right down to his prints in an apartment he said he’d never been inside.
Brazeau even admitted that he lied to police twice, saying he didn’t know the victim. The j -

A repeat drunk driver pulled over in La Pêche Tuesday morning was heading to his job driving a construction truck while registering triple the legal limit for blood alcohol.

Tsai: The Mike Duffy lawsuit provides a chance to make the Senate more accountable
Justice Sally Gomery has a pivotal opportunity to reform and make the Senate an accountable institution to Canadians. Appointed in July 2017, Justice Gomery is a former insurance and medical malpractice litigator and the daughter of retired Justice John Gomery, who led the commission into the Liberal expenses scandal that shone a spotlight on political payoffs and contributed to the federal Liberal Party’s defeat in 2006.
Sally Gomery now has a chance to make her own significant mark on a -
Planning committee decides Ottawa is a 65-storey city
Ottawa is a 65-storey city, no matter what a community plan says.
That’s the view of the majority of planning committee members who voted Tuesday to recommend allowing a giant three-tower complex at 900 Albert St., near the Bayview O-Train station.
Councillors Jan Harder, Tim Tierney, Stephen Blais, Rick Chiarelli, Jean Cloutier, Allan Hubley and Shad Qadri voted in favour of planning amendments that would allow the development, while Jeff Leiper and Tobi Nussbaum opposed. Council will cas -
Editorial: Where have all the public school trustees gone?
Ottawa’s school board elections have long been known for voter indifference. Now, a potential candidate shortage takes local apathy to a whole new level.
As it stands, the public school board will have contested races in only four of its 12 zones. In Zone 1, which covers Stittsville and the rural western parts of the city, no one has offered to run. The English Catholic board isn’t doing any better, with races in only three of its 10 zones. The deadline to register is July 27.

Two new reports indicate that both the Dallas Stars and the Tampa Bay Lightning are still vying to get their hands on Karlsson.
Many had assumed that the Tampa Bay Lightning were the frontrunners – some still do – but Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that the Stars aren’t done yet.
In fact, Brooks believes Dallas is now the -
Crews set up base camp in West Nipissing to battle fires
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is setting up a base camp at the River Valley outdoor rink in West Nipissing.
Fire crews will be stationed there to help gain control of two area forest fires, according to West Nipissing Emergency Services.
In addition to a forest fire in Temagami being as close as 35 kilometres away, Fire Chief Richard Maranda said there is a fire 15 to 20 kilometres north of River Valley.
“If the winds don’t switch, these fires should keep away from R -
Watch: Ottawa MC a killah onstage with Ghostface at Bluesfest
Warning: Salty language ahead.
When local MC Newsince was pulled on stage to join Ghostface Killah, one of the original members of the ’90s rap crew the Wu-Tang Clan, at Bluesfest Saturday, he was under just a bit of pressure.
Ghostface told the packed bowl to boo him off stage if he screwed up the lyrics made famous by the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard on Wu’s classic Protect Ya Neck.
Instead, an “awestruck” Ghostface declared, “that s- was beautiful.”

Cohen: Trump's Supreme Court pick may be his last big conservative act
PORTLAND, Maine – Power – who yields it, who wants it – is the oxygen of politics everywhere. In Washington, power now rests firmly in the hands of the Republicans, who control the presidency, Congress and now, finally, the U.S. Supreme Court.
When historians write the history of Donald Trump’s presidency, July 9, 2018 may well be its zenith. It’s the day that the president nominated (with the Senate expected to confirm) a fifth conservative justice to the court, ma -

House Works: Kill mould stains with oxygen
Sooner or later every deck, shed, fence and outdoor wood surface gets mouldy or weathered in time. Even non-wood surfaces such as composite decks, plastic lumber and vinyl siding start to grow things as the forces of nature have their way.
Entire lawsuits have even been launched over the growth of mould and fungus on outdoor building materials. For years, chlorine bleach as been the go-to option for removing stains like these, but in some ways this is a case of the medicine being worse than the -

Will Pimisi LRT station be overwhelmed by the nightly Bluesfest exodus?
The nightly Bluesfest exodus to public transit — one that has seen the Booth Street bridge jammed with people heading for buses — will look different in 2019 when the LRT line is open.
In an ideal scenario, two-car trains would fill up with up to 600 passengers from Pimisi station below the bridge. As people board the trains, the long platform would fill up again with passengers and the queue on the bridge would form an orderly line at the top of the stairs or elevator. A train would -

Risk of showers but we need 'significant' rainfall, say watershed watchers
There’s a slim chance of showers Tuesday morning but with so little rain in the last month — and more highs in the 30s on the way — it will take “significant” rainfall to get back to normal.
Fingers crossed for parched fields and gardens.
Stewards of the Mississippi Valley watershed are warning that flows through streams and rivers have been dropping for the past month due to hot, dry weather. Conditions are below average and evaporation becomes a concern if high te -
Today's letters: Iran and state sponsorship of terrorism
Iran isn’t worst sponsor of terror
Re: Why Harper was right to speak out on Iran, July 7.
There is exactly one sentence that I object to in the otherwise excellent opinion piece by David Kilgour, but it is an important one: “The Iranian regime has earned the title of the world’s No. 1 state sponsor of terrorism.” This statement is wrong and diverts attention from the true forces that inspire terrorism the way Canada, but also the U.S., Europe and other countries such as I -
ARMCHAIR MAYOR: Public ride-alongs with the police would boost trust and safety
This fall, Ottawa elects a new city council. To help local candidates as they campaign, the Citizen asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place – without necessarily breaking the bank. Today, educator and writer Aisha Sherazi suggests a formal police ride-along program for the public.
