Smoky dryer fire causes concerns in downtown highrise
A fire in a Laurier Avenue apartment building turned out to be less serious than first thought after a clothes dryer caught fire, sending heavy smoke streaming out of the 14th floor unit.
The occupant of the unit called Ottawa fire shortly after 3 p.m. The smoke was visible from street level and extra units were called as a precaution.
Firefighters found the fire contained mainly to the inside of the dryer, but it did affect the area immediately around the appliance.

Concert review: Neil Young delivers epic show in Quebec City
Neil Young with Promise of the RealFestival d’été de Quebec, Quebec CityReviewed Friday
Once an artist gets to a certain age, you wouldn’t expect much to thrill them. At 72, Neil Young has done everything and seen it all.But in Quebec City on Friday, performing on an enormous stage overlooking a vast audience that stretched as far as the eye could see along the historic Plains of Abraham battlefield, the Canadian rock legend seemed every bit as stoked as the young whipp -

Ottawa police officers seized a pair of handguns in separate incidents in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
The first occurred shortly before 1 a.m. during a traffic stop near the corner of Lester and Albion roads.
Police said the anti-gang officers were in the area as part of an increased police focus following recent incidents of shots fired.
At the stop, officers spotted marijuana in the vehicle and while arresting the two occupants, discovered that the passenger was carrying a loaded .32-ca -

Weather: The kind of day we dream about all winter
Today is what Ottawa waits for all winter.
We’re talking sunny (mostly) and warm. Not the hellfire heat of last week, but a forecast high of 28 C, although there’s a UV rating of 8 or very high.
Notice we didn’t include a ‘feels like’ humidity rating? Because there is none. At least not much.
A few clouds are expected to Saturday night, with a pleasant overnight low of 14 C.
This just in! Ottawa Public Health confirms all five public beaches are ready for business. -

Wiseman: Ford and Trudeau will get along like oil and water
In accounting for his personal success as premier and that of his Ontario Progressive Conservative party, Bill Davis once observed, “Bland works.” Those days are long gone.
The Liberals and the NDP cheered for Doug Ford’s victory in the race for the Ontario Progressive Conservative leadership in the spring, because his negatives in public opinion polling far exceeded those of his opponents. Nevertheless, Ford’s Conservatives triumphed resoundingly in the general election. -
Kilgour: Harper was right to speak out on Iran
The criticism levelled at former prime minister Stephen Harper for speaking to a “Free Iran” rally near Paris last Saturday is unfair. At that rally, Harper thanked the tens of thousands of participants for their “long battle for a free and democratic Iran,” without endorsing any political party.
Harper wasn’t alone at the rally. Canada’s delegation at the event included the former prime minister, Liberal MP Judy Sgro, former Conservative foreign minister -

Today's letters: Remembering two heroic people who helped others
Sister Betty Ann’s legacy lives on
Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Kinsella passed away on June 15. After retiring from decades of teaching, and support work, Sister Betty Ann focused on making a difference for young mothers and their children. She knew the most important thing one could provide a young mother was an education. To that end, in 1985 she created the Youville Centre.
Sister Betty Ann was a woman of deep faith, clear vision, tireless energy and commitment to action. A board membe -
Editorial: In abuse cases, who do we believe?
Recently, a 101-year old woman in an Ottawa long-term care home reported being “walloped” with a towel by a personal service worker. Though she suffers some dementia, her family believes her. The care home’s own probe, though, found no evidence of the alleged abuse. Police and the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care continue to investigate.
Meanwhile, in a case that seems unrelated but actually has parallels, the prime minister is accused of sexual misconduct 18 years ago, wh -
Bluesfest Review: Jethro Tull takes a nostalgic trip through the heady, hazy '60s
RBC Ottawa BluesfestFridayIan Anderson presents Jethro Tull / The War on Drugs
It was a throwback of three different sorts on Bluesfest’s main stage Friday with Ian Anderson celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jethro Tull, former teenyboppers Hanson marking their 25th year, and The War on Drugs rocking out their vintage heartland vibe.
While the venerable prog rockers of Jethro Tull may not be the marquee headliner they were in their hey-day, there were no signs of the long lineups and cro -
Aaron Brown narrowly wins men's 100-metre final at Canadian championships
The country’s eight fastest sprinters crossed the line in one big blur, leaving the Terry Fox Athletic Facility crowd in suspense and meet announcers lost over who actually won.
Toronto’s Aaron Brown won the men’s 100-metre final at the Canadian track and field championships Friday night, while three-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse finished third, in a race so tight it took officials a couple of minutes to decide the winner. Less than a tenth of a second separated the fi -
Six surviving dogs from SPCA of Western Quebec are ready for adoption after fire
Six dogs from the SPCA of Western Quebec are ready for a second chance at adoption days after a fire destroyed the Aylmer shelter where they were being housed and took the lives of more than 70 other animals.
While the canine survivors of the Monday night blaze wait for permanent homes, they’re being fed, sheltered and cared for at a nearby pet hotel.
Aside from minor coughs she chalks up to smoke inhalation, the dogs were healthy and ready to match with new owners, said Katia Veilleux, co -
