Perhaps it was just a matter of time, but some of the steam has gone out of the housing market in Ottawa’s western districts — from Tunney’s Pasture to Britannia.
While homeowners in these areas still registered year-over-year gains of five per cent to seven per cent for single-family properties sold in June, these were among the smallest increases in the city, according to data published Thursday by the Ottawa Real Estate Board.

No deaths attributed to Ottawa's weeklong heat wave: Coroner
While Montreal’s death toll from the blistering weeklong heat wave that has gripped Quebec and Eastern Ontario reached 18 on Thursday, health officials in Ottawa say the city hasn’t had a single heat-related death.
Ottawa paramedics responded to 15 heat-related calls on Wednesday, 11 on Tuesday and 20 on the holiday Monday, but they haven’t had an unusual number of death or “vital signs absent” calls since the heat arrived last weekend, said Ottawa Paramedic Service -
Phoenix Pay backlog down four per cent in June
It’s tenuous, but it’s definitely a trend: the government’s massive backlog of pay transactions is coming down.
Public Services and Procurement Canada, the federal department in charge of the $1-billion, decade-long Phoenix Pay project, reported Thursday that it had processed 13,000 more pay transactions than entered the system between May 30 and June 27, the latest pay period.
This marks the fifth straight federal government pay period with a net decline in transactions awaiti -

Man who lost mind after 18 months in solitary at Innes Road jail settles with province
Mutuir Rehman, the young killer who lost his mind on Innes Road after a staggering 18 months in solitary confinement, has won an out-of-court settlement from the province for failing him.
Prison staff fed him through a hatch, and beyond the odd 20-minute visit from a relative, Rehman, just 22 at the time, spent his days absent human interaction.
Rehman was at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree murder for the 2013 stabbing death of André -

OPP report long weekend fatalities, lay speeding charges
It was a deadly long weekend on Ontario roads this past Canada Day, with the Ontario Provincial Police reporting seven deaths and several drivers charged with speeding and stunt driving.
The OPP reported that five drivers, one passenger, and one pedestrian are among the victims who died on OPP-patrolled roads. All victims were killed in separate collisions.
Dangerous incidents also occurred off the road, with three drowning victims and two people who died in marine incidents in OPP jurisdictions -
Crash leads police to nearly 15,000 kg of illicit tobacco
A single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 sparked an investigation that led to the seizure of 14,662 kg of fine-cut tobacco in two rented cube vans and the arrest of three people who appear in court next month.
The OPP was called to the crash in Morrisburg on May 24 and alerted the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF), which also includes the RCMP, Canada Border Service Agency and province’s Ministry of Finance.

Ottawa 39th on list of world's wildest party cities. Really.
The capital ranks in the Top 50 of the world’s wildest cities according to a relocation site ranking which crunched the numbers on nightlife, booze and drugs for 112 world cities.
MoveHub claims that Ottawa (No. 39) is behind Vancouver (27) but ahead of Montreal (42) and Toronto (45).
The less-than-scientific ranking tallied what it calls the “not-so-holy-trinity.” Rankers used Yelp and TripAdvisor to work out the number of nightlife venues per 100,000 people. They took cannabi -

Ticks, Lyme disease and pets: Prevention, removal and symptoms
Just like you, your pet can make a tempting target for a hungry tick — potentially one of the black-legged variety, which can carry and transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease when it bites.
Armed with advice from its chief veterinarian, the Ottawa Humane Society reminded pet owners that Lyme disease can cause potentially life-threatening illness in dogs.
About one in 10 canines infected with Lyme will demonstrate “this kind of shifting, limping, lameness that usually will res -
Ticks and Lyme disease: What is it and how can I protect myself?
As the warm weather lures Ottawans into the great outdoors, protecting against Lyme disease and the tiny creatures that carry it might not be top of mind. But in 2017, there were 186 confirmed or probable cases of the disease in Ottawa, nearly double what was reported by Ottawa Public Health the year before.
Because awareness is key to preventing what can develop into serious illness, here’s what you need to know about ticks and Lyme disease before you head into the wild — or yo -
Boil-water order for part of Gatineau, just in case
Gatineau has issued a notice that some residents of the Limbour neighbour should boil their drinking water for one minute, just in case it becomes contaminated during replacement of a watermain serving the area.

The affected area is bounded by Saint-Louis, Pointe-Pêlée and de la Tire streets and Érables Road.
The notice takes affect at 10 p.m. Thursday. The city hasn’t yet fixed a time wh -

Adam: Château Laurier delay isn't Ottawa Council's finest hour
Wherever you stand on the proposed extension of Château Laurier hotel, there’s no sugar-coating what Ottawa councillors did recently. Faced with a tough decision, they chickened out.
We elect councillors to weigh issues that come before them, have a vigorous debate, then make decisions on our behalf. In the end, we may not all agree with this or that decision, but we will appreciate the effort that went into it and accept that we cannot always win the argument. Win some, lose some. T -
Spratt: On gun violence, Jim Watson and John Tory shoot from the lip
If a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, it seems that the mayors of Ontario’s largest cities have been very, very consistent — at least when it comes to gun crime.
The problems in Toronto and Ottawa are similar: an increase in shootings. And like moths to a flame, John Tory and Jim Watson took to their bully pulpits recently to spitball solutions. Unfortunately, those solutions relied on the same tired trope that has failed our communities again and again: It’ -

Scam calls targeting Mandarin speakers arrives in Ottawa, police warn

Reevely: Rebel populist Randy Hillier makes a run for Speaker of the Ontario legislature

Britannia closed for swimmers due to high E. coli counts, Westboro, Petrie Island River reopen
Heat-suffering Ottawans have been advised not to head to popular Britannia Beach Thursday.
Ottawa public health advises the beach registered elevated levels of E. coli bacteria in the latest readings and will be closed for swimming for the time being.
Residents are encouraged to stay out of the water.
The good news is that two beaches closed Wednesday — Westboro and Petrie Island River beaches — have reopened for business.

You’d think that TV super-chef and international restaurateur David Chang would have some good suggestions regarding cities that a foodie should visit.
Chang, the man behind the renowned Momofuku empire of restaurants, has haute-cuisine outposts and more wallet-friendly eateries in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Toronto and Sydney, Australia. On his trending Netflix show Ugly Delicious, he’s a globetrotter in search of great eats.

Man slicked with 'blood, sweat and washer fluid' in meth-fueled incident
A civic-minded man police believe was high on crystal meth helpfully told a gas bar clerk to call 911 before a violent outburst in Kingston early Tuesday morning.
Then, “covered in blood, sweat and washer fluid,” the 25-year-old immediately put his hands behind his back when police arrive.
The incident happened at about 3 a.m. Tuesday at a gas station store on Bath Road. The man started kicking and banging on the door of the store then flinging jugs of windshield washer fluid.

The sweltering continues, but a cold front is finally heading this way
The end is near, for the heat wave, that is.
Thursday’s high is forecast to be a sultry 35 C but watch for the mercury to top out at just 22 C Friday.
“A cool down is expected by Friday with the passage of a cold front,” Environment Canada says in its heat warning.
Up first, Thursday features sunny skies turning into a mix of sun and cloud by late afternoon with a 30 per cent chance of showers and, for Bluesfest fans, the risk of a thunderstorm. No doubt oven-hot southwest wind -

Is Ottawa hot enough to cook an egg on a car?
A hot summer day is a fine time to test out an old urban legend: That you can cook food on hot pavement.
Well, it turns out pavement doesn’t get all that hot. But cars? All that sheet metal gets much hotter, so this seemed like a possibility.
We trundled out a couple of parking-lot science trials, with our resident science guy, Tom Spears.
First, an easy one: How long does it take an ice cream cone to melt when it’s 34 C?
Equipment: A 75-cent cone from IKEA — same price with or -
Today's letters: Lessons about Canada Day
Indigenous message was exactly right
Re: The land was here before they called it ‘Canada,’ June 30.
Jay Odjick’s article was excellent. It’s always been a mystery to me that someone landed on a shore, perhaps met by different-looking and speaking individuals and, because they couldn’t be understood, proclaimed them inferior so the land could be claimed for a king or queen across the ocean. What arrogance!
It’s taken centuries of segregation and abuse, so let&r -

Rowdy teens won't prevent Barrhaven from staging annual Canada Day party, organizer vows
There may be a fence around the park and security guards checking backpacks at the entrance next year, but Barrhaven’s Canada Day celebration will continue, vows volunteer organizer Darrell Bartraw.
The community can’t allow a bunch of teenage hooligans who threw firecrackers into the crowd this year to scare people away, says the president of Canada Day Barrhaven Inc.
“They are not going to beat me.”
Organizers will meet next week to discuss what security measures will b -
Egan: 'I could have died,' mom says after bullet grazes her head
Oni Joseph dodged a bullet Tuesday evening, and not in the poetic sense.
Better known as Oni The Haitian Sensation, the “slam poetry” champ was in her bedroom in the south end of Ottawa when a .45-calibre bullet flew by her head — so close, she said it left a powdered, “iridescent” residue on her forehead and grazed her son’s lower leg.
The bullet then deflected off a door frame, dented a piece of drywall and came to rest at the top of the carpeted stairs, bel -
Cooling off at Lansdowne Park
Wednesday was hot and Thursday will be hotter but hang in there for some sweet relief before a beautiful — and finally seasonal — July weekend.
Environment Canada’s heat warning is still in effect but promises that “a cool down is expected by Friday with the passage of a cold front.”
In the meantime, the agency reiterated that pets and people should never be left in parked vehicles and that young children, pregnant women, seniors, the sick, athletes and outdoor -
