The SPCA of Western Quebec confirmed Wednesday that more than 70 animals died in the fire that burned the Aylmer shelter to the ground late Monday night.
“To say that the last 30 hours have been difficult and devastating is an understatement. There are simply no words to describe our incredible loss and sadness,” the organization said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon.
Six dogs were rescued by firefighters and taken into the care of the SPCA de l’Outaouais. The ass

Denley: A 65-storey tower in Ottawa? Council should think twice
Ottawa Council spent months dickering over the look of an extension to the Château Laurier without reaching a clear conclusion. Now, it wants to approve the tallest building in the city’s history in back-to-back meetings next week.
A conglomerate of development companies proposes to build towers of 65, 56 and 27 storeys on property adjacent to the new Bayview LRT station. The development will include office and retail space, as well as 1,241 residential units.

Bollard test on Sparks Street aims to restore the 'pedestrian' mall
The City of Ottawa and Sparks Street Mall Authority are making their first big play to make Sparks Street a true pedestrian mall by installing vehicle-blocking bollards at the entrances.
Court Curry, the city’s manager of right-of-way, heritage and urban design services, said the steel bollards installed at each intersection will become a two-year pilot project. Workers are currently installing the footings and the actual bollards will be popped in around mid-July.
The 40-50 bollards have -

Yakko Takko towed: Popular Mexican food truck looking for a new home
A popular Bank Street food truck is looking for a new home after a slew of complaints from neighbouring businesses prompted Ottawa bylaw officers to tow the business on Wednesday.
Yakko Takko’s owner, Roberto Reyes, said he has been battling with the city all year as neighbouring businesses have complained about his truck, his music and even his two pet dogs, who like to hang out in the shade under the truck while he works.
“My dogs were just chilling in the shade and bylaw came and -
Reevely: Ontario Tories halt changes to policing, ticket-scalping and vaping rules, don't tell public for days
The Ontario government has stopped changes to how police are overseen, stopped new restrictions on smoking and vaping, and held off capping the price of re-sold event tickets, in a flurry of decisions the new Progressive Conservative cabinet made last week but didn’t publicize.
These calls were made in the meeting of ministers Premier Doug Ford scheduled for June 29, just after the new Progressive Conservative cabinet was sworn in at Queen’s Park. There might have been other such dec -
Special dinner at Signatures matched French-Japanese dishes with sake
I probably had as much sake last Thursday night as I’d cumulatively drunk over the last few years.
What’s more, instead of drinking the cheap stuff in thimble-sized sake cups, I and others at a special event at Signatures, the restaurant attached to Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa on Laurier Avenue, were enjoying superior samples of the Japanese rice-based fermented alcohol, paired as if they were wines with Signatures chef Yannick Anton’s made-for-the-occasion dishes.

City confirms it has documents at storm-damaged Iron Mountain building
The city confirmed Wednesday that it has documents stored at the Iron Mountain records management centre that was heavily damaged in Monday’s thunderstorm, but says it’s still waiting to find out whether any documents have been damaged.
Strong winds ripped a huge section of metal siding off Iron Mountain’s Kenaston Street building during the late afternoon storm, exposing hundreds of file boxes to the elements.

Girl throws destructive tantrum at grandma's house – Kingston Police
A 14-year-old local girl was arrested after a violent outburst over a phone not working, report Kingston Police.
On Tuesday at about 5 p.m. a girl went to her grandmother’s home to use the phone. The phone was not working and the girl threw a tantrum, slamming doors, hitting walls, and smashing dishes, police said. When the grandmother took younger children out of the home to escape the tirade, the girl grabbed a baseball bat and followed them. The girl then smashed a rear window of the ho -
LIVE: Is Ottawa hot enough to cook an egg on a car?
A hot summer day is a fine time to test out an old urban legend: That you can cook food on hot pavement.
Well, it turns out pavement doesn’t get all that hot. But cars? All that sheet metal gets much hotter, so this seemed like a possibility.
We trundled out a couple of parking-lot science trials, with our resident science guy, Tom Spears.
First, an easy one: How long does it take an ice cream cone to melt when it’s 34 C?
Equipment: A 75-cent cone from IKEA — same price with or -
Ottawa Bluesfest creates smoking zone for medical marijuana and cigarettes
Bluesfest organizers are getting a jump on the coming legalization of cannabis by providing a smoking area where patrons can smoke medical marijuana with proof of a prescription. Cigarette smoking is also permitted in the new area.
“It is a very hot and confusing topic right now, and these things will take time to sort out,” says Mark Monahan, Bluesfest’s executive director, of the coming legalization.“We’re making an effort to be proactive on this, and trying to ma -

Bluesfest supplier includes Killdeer on festival shirt sleeve
One of the T-shirt suppliers for the 2018 RBC Ottawa Bluesfest has included a killdeer on the left arm of this year’s souvenir shirt.
The tie-dye T-shirt, designed by Fabgear 64, sports the endangered species and the words “Thank You” in bolded text as a way of acknowledging the bird and its nest, which needed to be moved in order to kick off the 2018 year of the event.
The official Bluesfest T-shirt now has a killdeer on the left sleeve.

Glavin: America, the broken? Strangely, it's not the case
It is a question worth asking, this being an historic year for American dyspepsia, and this also being that particular week that comes ’round every year when Americans assert their mettle in fireworks displays and patriotic barbecues with degrees of fervour Canadians would never be so coarse as to exhibit, or so we might flatter ourselves by claiming.
The simplest way of putting the question: Is America irreparably broken?
Quite a few Americans appear to believe so. In a Rasmussen Reports -

Copper-hunting cable crook strikes Trillium Line, shutting down O-Train service for second day
A crook, likely hunting for valuable copper, cut a signal cable on the Trillium Line while the trains were in service during the morning commute Tuesday.
The rail line was still down Wednesday morning and OC Transpo wasn’t sure when it would be running again.
Troy Charter, director of transit operations at Transpo, said trains had been running up until around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when the signals suddenly stopped functioning.
“This is critical infrastructure for our system,” -

Police lay charges against truck driver after crash
Ontario Provincial Police officers have charged a truck driver after the vehicle he was driving crashed through a barrier and fell to the bottom of an embankment early Wednesday morning.
Police said the tractor-trailer was eastbound on Forest Lea Road, half way between Pembroke and Petawawa, when it left the roadway. The vehicle, which was transporting paint, sustained heavy damages. It also lost much of its load, leaking paint all over the area where it came to a rest.

No swimming at Westboro and Petrie Island River beaches due to E. coli
Ottawa Public Health is asking residents to avoid swimming in at least two area beaches on Wednesday, as a heat wave continues to grip the city.
Public Health officials found that E. coli levels exceed provincially acceptable safety standards at Westboro and Petrie Island River beaches.
Residents are encouraged to stay out of the water at those locations.
Mooney’s Bay, Britannia and Petrie Island East Bay were all open for swimming Wednesday.
A heat warning remained in effect throughout th -
Fourth killdeer "doing well," after siblings fly the coop
It’s not such a hard-knock life for the orphaned killdeer who hatched after its parents and three siblings had already flown the coop over the long weekend.
The baby bird was taken to the Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care, where workers are trying to surround it with things that will help it feel confident enough to soon live on its own in the wild.
“The mirror and feather duster are there to make him feel safe and comfortable,” said Mae Goguen, executive director at the centre.

Guitarist Stéphane Wrembel, a Django Reinhardt devotee, strives to make transcendental music
As far as Wikipedia is concerned, guitarist Stéphane Wrembel is best known as a composer and peformer of Gypsy Jazz. A New York Times writer went so far as to call Wrembel “perhaps the most creative improviser in Gypsy jazz today.”
But if you put the label “Gypsy Jazz” to Wrembel, his response suggests that he’s been at least a little misunderstood.
“I don’t like this name Gypsy Jazz. I never use it. And especially not to describe my music!&r -
Richardson: We fooled the killdeers. What else can we move slowly and gradually?
Avian moving experts successfully shifted a pair of killdeer birds and their four eggs 25 metres away from the Ottawa Bluesfest main stage. The experts transferred the eggs from their real nest into an artificial one. Once it was established that mama bird and papa bird had failed to notice the switcheroo, the experts then moved the new home at the rate of one metre every 15 to 20 minutes. The birds were none the wiser, and the eggs hatched soon after.
I had no idea that experts are standing by -

The son of a tango violinist in Buenos Aires, Pablo Ziegler found his early musical thrills as a teenager playing jazz and Dixieland at the piano, almost 60 years ago.
Now 73, Ziegler says that back then he dismissed tango as music “for old people.”
But after his musical knowledge and abilities grew, he received the call in the late 1970s to play with the revolutionary tango composer and virtuoso bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. After a decade with the legend, Ziegler became adept a -

House Works: Your questions on cottage foundations and finishing a deck
Building Cottage Foundation Piers
Q: What kind of foundation piers can I build for a raised cottage? I’ve seen people use concrete poured in round forms and others use concrete blocks.
A: Both poured piers and blocks are options, but there are a couple of things to consider. If you’re building on bedrock that’s sloped even a little (common in many areas of cottage country), you’ll need to drill into the rock and use corrosion-proof rods to anchor the foundation. If -
Vandalism to O-Train forces commuters to take buses, adds to traffic issues on Wednesday
Officials with OC Transpo warned Wednesday morning commuters that O-Train service would be paused while crews work to clean up vandalism that occurred overnight.
OC Transpo wouldn’t specify the amount of damage that occurred or what the vandals damaged specifically. All service along the Trillium Line 2 was being replaced by Route 107 buses between Bayview and South Keys stations, with limited stops along the way, until crews could clean up the mess.
The news came at the same time tha -

Armchair Mayor: Ottawa, we need more public washrooms
This fall, Ottawa elects a new city council. To help guide the campaign this summer, we’ve asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place – without necessarily breaking the bank. Today, Alan Etherington of the GottaGo Campaign, Ottawa urges politicians (and private business) to improve access to that one facility we all need.
Our last city council made some limited progress in improving access to public toilets in Ottawa:
• It agreed to add two toilets to -

Today will be brutally hot but relief is coming
Wednesday is hot and Thursday hotter but hang in there for some sweet relief before a beautiful – and finally seasonal – July weekend.
Environment Canada’s heat warning is still in effect but promises that “a cool down is expected by Friday with the passage of a cold front.”
In the meantime, the agency reiterated that pets and people should never be left in parked vehicles and that young children, pregnant women, seniors, the sick, athletes and outdoor workers -

Coun. Jan Harder tweeted a message calling the teenagers who threw firecrackers into the crowd “a bunch of irresponsible losers.”
The Canada Day celebration in Barrhaven ended with police pepper spraying a large group of rowdy teenagers who were attacking them and subduing a 15-year-old with
