'Unknown number' of animals perish in SPCA fire in Aylmer
Volunteers carried the bodies of dogs shrouded in tarps Tuesday from the pile of rubble that is all that remains of the SPCA shelter in Aylmer. The building was destroyed by fire Monday night, killing an unknown number of animals.
Gatineau firefighters braved intense flames to rescue a dozen dogs before the building collapsed.
“To see it like this is just heartbreaking,” said Vanessa Weaver, a shelter employee who was among those who arrived to look at the wreckage and mourn the -

Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe page for a 26-year-old woman who was in serious condition Tuesday after she was hit by a personal watercraft while floating along the Gatineau River on Canada Day.
The Sûreté du Québec said the woman, Casey Delaney, was floating on a large party raft on the river near l’Île Patry, about 25 kilometres south of Maniwaki, with six other people, when they were struck by a personal watercraft. Police, who are treating the -

Editorial: Garbage in, Garbage out
One of the core functions of a city government is ensuring competent garbage pick-up. But it’s a file Ottawa fumbles more often than it finesses, with city-run collection services chronically over-budget. The worst part is that city councillors seem not to care. During municipal election season, they might want to revisit their attitude.
City employees pick up garbage in two of Ottawa’s five collection zones. One city contract was awarded without competition, the other was a bid -
Three people taken to hospital after crash on Highway 17 near Renfrew Tuesday morning
Three people were taken to hospital after a four-car crash Tuesday morning on Hwy. 17 near Renfrew.

The highway west of Bruce Street and east of Storyland Road was closed around 6 a.m. a -
Cohen: Stephen Harper will never change – even in Washington
PORTLAND, Maine – The only man named Harper who counts in Washington these days plays right field for the Nationals, hit 29 home runs last year and is soon to become a ridiculously rich free agent. On this Fourth of July – Donald Trump’s travelling carnival of atrocities notwithstanding – the big existential questions in the capital of this feverish country revolve around Bryce Harper.
Will he move to first base? Will he hit more home runs than last year? (He has 21 so fa -

Barrhaven's Canada Day party disrupted by teenage 'losers,' says ward councillor
Barrhaven’s 35-year tradition of celebrating Canada Day with an outdoor community party was threatened by teenagers who disrupted the event this year, says the city councillor for the area.
Coun. Jan Harder tweeted a message calling the teenagers who threw firecrackers into the crowd “a bunch of irresponsible losers.”
The Canada Day celebration in Barrhaven ended with police pepper spraying a large group of rowdy teenagers who were attacking them and subduing a 15-year-old with -

Underpass ethics: To walk your bike or not at popular UOttawa cycling, pedestrian connection
Temporary signs erected on either end of a popular underpass connecting Sandy Hill and the University of Ottawa with Centretown and other points west of the Rideau Canal have created confusion and frustration among some cyclists and pedestrians.
The signs suggest cyclists dismount and walk their bicycles through the area, which they share with pedestrians and construction workers busily trying to complete the new uOttawa light-rail station.
But is it against the law to disregard the signs, as hu -

Rideau station becomes critical measuring stick in predicting November LRT readiness
The City of Ottawa and OC Transpo are entering a critical period in the run-up to the launch of the Confederation Line, with the head of transportation still not making any promises about whether the $2.1-billion LRT line will make the November handover deadline.
It’s likely that under the schedule first contemplated by the city, the LRT line would have opened by now, or at some point shortly after Canada Day, if the May 24 handover happened as initially planned.

Passengers spend four hours on Ottawa airport tarmac during heat wave
Dual calamities — one meteorological and one mechanical — grounded an Air Canada flight from Ottawa to Toronto on Monday afternoon, leaving passengers waiting on the Ottawa airport tarmac for more than four hours as a heat wave outside kept temperatures feeling close to 40 degrees.
According to Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick, the flight — which was initially scheduled to leave at 3 p.m. — was first delayed an hour by the thunderstorm that rolled through Monday aft -

How to get 10 million video views on YouTube
Spoiler alert, it’s not quick and easy.
The first Ottawa Citizen YouTube video was uploaded Oct. 25, 2007, only two years behind the first YouTube upload ever.
11 years and 13,452 video uploads later, it happened: 10 million views. While that might sound somewhat less impressive, it’s still a milestone to be proud of. In the past decade, the digital media landscape has changed rapidly, with the rise and fall of mega-platforms (hello IGTV, RIP Vine) and the continued shifting of -
Sam Giannetti (1950-2018): 'A strong thread has been broken' with death of Preston Hardware co-founder
Sandro “Sam” Giannetti was known as the quiet brother, the one who presided over Little Italy’s Preston Hardware with a smile and a ready contribution for any good cause.
“He could never say ‘no’ to anyone, if a teen came for a sponsorship or a charity came calling,” said Lori Mellor, executive director of the Preston Street BIA. “He was always the big, soft heart of Preston Hardware.”
Giannetti, along with his brother Mario and best fri -

Fast motorcycle, short chase, lots of charges in Gatineau for Ottawa man
He raced the law and the law won.
A 30-year-old Ottawa man on a motorcycle was cruising along Highway 50 in Gatineau on Sunday afternoon when a couple of Sûreté du Québec officers tried to pull him over.
The biker had other ideas.
He took off west, and tried to lose the police by doing a U-turn into the highway’s eastbound lanes.
Then he lost control of the bike in the interchange with Highway 5. That’s where police caught up with him.
For starters, he faces -

The story of Bluesfest: How a little Ottawa music show became a juggernaut

Some had bought the $4 advance one-day tickets, others waited until the last minute and paid the $5 premium price at the gate.
They were there for headliners Clarence Clemons, Buckwheat Zydeco and Randy Bachman.

In their own words: Ottawa security guards' tales of the weird and wild
Security guards are often witness to the crafty and scheming side of humanity. Here are some of the most memorable things that two veterans of the Ottawa security scene told this newspaper they’ve had to deal with at various events around the city, in their own words:
1) “A woman tried to sneak a non-service animal cat onto Parliament Hill twice in the same day. First time in a baby stroller, the second time under her jacket.
2) “We caught a couple of people with those bra -
Scanlan: A young married couple's mad dash for cancer treatment — and the community that rallied behind them
Young marrieds shouldn’t have such grave concerns.
In a perfect world they would be debating house paint colours, not a desperate, last-minute flight overseas to save a bride’s life.
Sarah and Matt Haddad grew up together in Orléans, proverbial childhood sweethearts, and had only been married for eight months when Sarah, then 26, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a rising fashion designer with a new job in Montreal; he, a builder. They had just bought a house in Montre -

As Ottawa sweats, it's not the heat, it's the humidity (seriously)
Here’s something that you might not believe, at first: summer days aren’t getting any hotter in Ottawa.
“Summer highs are actually less extreme than they were 70 years ago” said Rolf Campbell, a local weather expert, who has for years been tracking and analyzing Ottawa weather statistics and runs the @YOW_Weather account on Twitter.
“Speaking from a purely statistical point of view, there’s no obvious gain (in temperatures), and if you want to be technical abo
