Concert Review: Herbie Hancock at the 2018 TD Ottawa Jazz Festival
Herbie Hancock2018 TD Ottawa Jazz FestivalTop Shelf Main StageReviewed Saturday
The 2018 TD Ottawa Jazz Festival’s main stage series finished Saturday night with a déjà vu experience for music fans who had seen keyboard great Herbie Hancock play in Confederation Park in 2008 and 2010.
It was expected and maybe even iconic when, for an encore to his super-sized set this year, Hancock strapped on his keytar and pumped out a hardy rendition of his classic funk hit Chameleon -

Fourth killdeer egg hatches Canada Day, but parents fly the coop
Hours late but perfectly timed for Canada Day, the fourth killdeer egg hatched at Bluesfest on Sunday morning at the city’s most-watched bird’s nest.
Festival technical director Scott Pollard said the last egg hatched at about 10:30, a few hours after the other three had fled and the parents had scattered.
He said National Capital Commission staff were immediately notified and, within an hour, a representative from the local wildlife centre was on hand to take the wee “orphan&r -

Killdeer couple, new chicks not sticking around for Bluesfest
On a broiling Saturday afternoon, five days before the launch of Bluesfest, the stork finally arrived at the city’s most talked about bird’s nest.
By 5 p.m., three killdeer chicks had broken through their shells and were meekly moving about as a pair of National Capital Commission biologists were keeping a close eye on the fourth and last speckled egg.
“I think it turned out extremely well, for everybody,” said Bluesfest technical director Scott Pollard. He said he n -
Canada Day weather in two words: Heat warning
Happy Canada 151 everyone!
If you’ve never experienced a humidex of 47, today’s your chance.
Our friends at Environment Canada have put out a heat warning for Canada day. With high daytime temperatures and overnight lows in the low to mid twenties, there will be little or no relief from the heat.
Saturday should see a mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of showers this afternoon with risk of a thunderstorm. (We’ll keep you posted on any thunderstorm watches or wa -

Egan: Bad heart, no pulse, man on machine awaits transplant
Jimmy Sullivan, 61, has an enlarged heart and no pulse — and hasn’t felt this good in years.
A commercial fisherman from a hamlet in Newfoundland and Labrador, Sullivan is a patient at the Ottawa Heart Institute and a kind of willing prisoner on the grounds of the Civic campus, unable to stray more than two hours away.
In February, in preparation for an eventual heart transplant, Sullivan was equipped with a $150,000 device called a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, a mechanic -
