Blood ties: Two strangers linked through a stem cell donation meet for the first time
For a leukemia patient hoping to find a stem cell match from a stranger, finding that match can be like winning the lottery.
But the same is also true of the donor who gets a phone call that they have something desperately needed by another person somewhere in a wide, wide world.
In 2016, a woman with leukemia was infused with stem cells from a man at The Ottawa Hospital. The pair had been matched through a network of donor registries that spans the globe. The recipient and donor knew nothing ab -
Douglas Coupland unveils new National Portrait at the Ottawa Art Gallery
Hidden among the multi-coloured faces comprising Douglas Coupland’s latest work The National Portrait is a practical joke.
Three years in the making, the piece is made up of 1,000 3D-printed portraits, which the artist and author has arranged in a creative formation inside the Ottawa Art Gallery’s Alma Duncan Salon. Some of the head-and-shoulders busts are placed on small risers; others are stacked in towers six or more high. Still others are so stretched and distorted they look -

OCTC principal attends her final graduation ceremony after 28 years in education
Leslie Walker, the retiring principal of the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre School at CHEO, has some advice for all those educators who will teach children with disabilities.
“Meet the child where they’re at — and acknowledge that the child has a voice,” Walker said in a recent interview to mark the end of her 28 years as a teacher and principal.
“You have to truly believe that every child has an incredible opportunity to succeed. I know that’s -

AG releases annual greatest hits of fraud and waste at city hall
A city employee who profited from selling City of Ottawa-branded swag and another who ditched work early and fudged data reports made the auditor general’s list of featured cases in his latest fraud and waste report.
There was a worker who was receiving long-term disability benefits that didn’t line up with the medical condition, a worker who hung out at home during a shift (with the city vehicle parked in the driveway), and a family member who didn’t tell the city about a pens -

What is open and closed on Canada Day
If you are in Ottawa on Canada Day, you will want to know what’s open and closed on the country’s 151st birthday. This year is tricky because the big day falls on Sunday, which means Monday will be a Statutory holiday.
• This paper will not publish a print edition Monday.
• OC Transpo and Para Transpo are operating free-of-charge on July 1 until the end of the service day at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 2, with extra service on many routes to get people downtown for Ca -

Holiday, heatwave a threat to dogs' lives, Humane Society warns
The combination of scorching heat forecast for the busiest day of the Ottawa Humane Society’s year and a human quarrel could mean devastation and even death to dogs, the Ottawa Humane Society warns.
“Runaway canines, extreme heat, dogs left in cars with no effective community response: the perfect storm,” Brune Roney argued in a post to the agency’s website Thursday.
First, the society is always swamped on July 1 because “most dogs are terrified of firewor -

'Bluesnester' immortalized in art to benefit other birds
An Ottawa artist is auctioning off his sketch of the killdeer who famously slowed the Bluesfest beat to raise money for Safe Wings Ottawa.
Andrew King dashed off the sketch Wednesday, captioning it “good luck ‘lil gal” and noting “the city is rooting for you!”
But interest from fans soon had him hatch a plan to benefit the program of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club aimed at saving birds from dangers including window collisions through research, pr -
Shaver: Canada's health benefits should be for everyone
Many Quebecers will come to Ottawa for Canada Day celebrations. This summer, many also will vacation in other provinces. But if they need access to health care outside Quebec, they won’t be treated equitably.
Why not? In 1984, the Canada Health Act was passed unanimously; all Quebec MPs voted for it. However, Quebec has refused to comply with Section 11b of the act, which holds that if a person has to receive health benefits in a different province from the one they live in, their home pro -

Adam: Time to challenge Jim Watson's two-per-cent cap on tax increases
The result of the October municipal election may be a foregone conclusion, with Mayor Jim Watson and those councillors who are seeking re-election expected to sail through comfortably. But that does not mean a lack of important issues to debate in the coming months.
There are several to consider, but what should be a big ballot issue is whether the city’s two per cent cap on property taxes is not only good fiscal policy but good public policy.
No question, property taxes are the heartbeat -

The defence tandem of Dominic Lamb and Fady Mansour will argue its motion under Section 11b of the Charter, commonly known as a Jordan applicat -

Sale of Rockcliffe Boathouse stuck on shoals of legal dispute with NCC, province
A longtime owner of the historic Rockcliffe Boathouse says she feels as though she’s locked in a “David and Goliath” legal battle that’s forced her to postpone her retirement and clean houses to make ends meet.

Oh the times the birds flipped us
Through the ages, let’s face it, birds have a lot to answer for. We recall their flights of fancy, mostly winging it:In 2013, work on a $24-million bridge over the Jockvale Road was halted, then reconfigured, after evidence was found for nesting barn swallows, an endangered species. Though two nests were located in a section of the bridge to be demolished and replaced, a couple of Citizen writers and a bird expert couldn’t see a single swallow in flight. However, the Ministry of Natu -

Not-so-fabulous Fourth: Trade war prompts Watson to decline U.S. ambassador's party invitation
With previous themes like Summer Picnic in the American Tradition, Road Trip USA, and Motor City Rising, the U.S. ambassador’s annual Fourth of July garden party encourages Canadian VIPs to celebrate all things red, white and blue.
This year, though, Mayor Jim Watson’s not really in the mood.
Given the recent tension between Canucks and their neighbours to the south, it’s not entirely surprising that at least one big Ottawa name has declined his invitation to the 2018 Independe -
