Reevely: Safe detour for Queensway footbridge rebuild still stands a chance
The city’s plan to replace the Harmer Avenue footbridge over Highway 417 with thoughts and prayers for two years could yet be fixed, depending on how a meeting Coun. Jeff Leiper has on Thursday turns out.
While the rundown footbridge west of downtown is rebuilt over the next two years, the city planned a temporary segregated bike lane on Holland Avenue just to the east. Then 118 people signed a petition objecting to the lost parking. Then 650 people signed a petition asking for the track. -
Canada Day on Parliament Hill could be a scorcher: Here's what you need to know
This Canada Day will rival the hottest July 1 in Ottawa on record, with the temperature forecast to hit a scorching 36 C.

“This looks like it will be a multi-day heat event, not just for Ottawa but right across southern Ontario,” said Geoff Coulson, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Ottawa’s current record high for July 1 is 36.7 C, reached -

Bluesfest killdeer's 'bluesnest' is on the move
The Bluesfest killdeer and the four eggs in its inconvenient “bluesnest” are on the move.
Whether that means a relocation to a new site on LeBreton Flats out of harm’s way, or a three-hour drive to the Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary in Minden, On., won’t be known until bird experts arrive in Ottawa later Tuesday.
Woodlands executive director, Monika Melichar, left for Ottawa Tuesday afternoon after Bluesfest organizers got the OK from Environment Canada to move the nest, wh -

Glebe development latest to leave councillor's head hurting over planning
Coun. David Chernushenko has a headache from developers getting more than what the city’s planning rules allow.
“I feel like I’ve run up a wall enough times that my head hurts,” Chernushenko said Tuesday during a planning committee meeting, which approved a seven-storey building in the Glebe.
“I don’t think the problem is my head. I think it’s the wall.”

Editorial: Gatineau's LRT should get full support
The City of Gatineau is pushing aggressively for its own light-rail transit system. Good: Until that goal is achieved, Gatineau’s bus-only transit will be out of synch with Ottawa’s new LRT.
Gatineau wants to build a 26-kilometre rail line at an estimated cost of $2.1 billion. It hopes to use the Alexandra and Prince of Wales bridges to cross the Ottawa River and connect with our LRT. This would be a huge step forward for the thousands of Ontarians and Quebecers who commute inte -

Privy Council Clerk Michael Wernick has recently rejected the conclusion of Canada’s auditor general that the Public Service has a “broken culture.” Wernick feels that this view is not supported by much evidence. Where could one find such evidence?

Cohen: Even today, America still ignores the black experience
MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The most unlikely expression of the unsettled past in the “Cradle of the Confederacy” is not the duelling monuments to civil war and civil rights that line the capital’s gracious Dexter Avenue. It is a few miles from downtown, more subtly, on Ann Street.
The school is one of those standard mid-century, low-slung red-brick institutions. From behind, it looks like an abandoned warehouse of smeared windows and cracked walls.

Antiques: $35,000 Group of Seven painting makes big impression
Q: My family has had this Group of Seven painting ever since it was received from my grand uncle as a wedding gift to my parents upon their marriage in 1935. We have often wondered what public or private history may be behind “The Red Barn” from its painted signature and date of ‘L.L. FITZGERALD 1921.’ It measures 20 x 28 cm tall (8 x 11 inches).
Any information you might be able to add, including its potential value, would be very much appreciated.

A Kingston developer has plans to renovate the former Prison for Women site.
The Doornekamp family’s ABNA Investment Ltd. has an approved offer to buy the 3.27-hectare property from Queen’s University, which purchased it in 2007 but didn’t follow through on plans to renovate the building on Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard to house its archives.
The P4W, which held maximum security inmates such as Karla Homolka, took its first inmates in 1934 and was closed in 2000. In 1994, the -

Enjoy this relatively cool day – it’s getting hot, hot, hot with the mercury hitting 36 C by Canada Day.
Add in the humidity factor and some forecasts indicate it will “feel like” 45.
Ottawa awoke to a morning low of just 7 C Tuesday with a forecast high of 25 C under sunny skies and just a smidge of humidity that will make it feel like 26. The UV index is 8 or very high. The low is a comfortable 12 C.
Wednesday should start out with mixed skies then turn cloudy by late m -
Egan: When a neighbour opens a 'ghost hotel' in your backyard
They are sometimes called “ghost hotels,” these Airbnb-style rentals in neighbourhoods all over the city — “ghost” because there’s no front desk, no staff, often just a digital handshake with a nameless, absent owner.
And, as Tracy Penniston discovered, no one to turn to when trouble breaks out, or things go boo in the night.
“I hate being antagonistic about it, but it’s a big accident waiting to happen. It really is,” she said on a sun-dappl -

Today's letters: The Senators, the Château, the festival
Feeling his neck?
Re: Senators make Brady Tkachuk the No. 4 pick in the NHL draft, June 22.
The photo in Saturday’s Citizen shows a very proud and happy Brady Tkachuk, the Ottawa Senators’ first-round draft pick, after putting on his Senators’ sweater for the first time. Ottawa’s scouting staff are all decked out in shiny suits and ties. But like a tear in a Picasso painting, standing beside Tkachuk is Senators’ owner Eugene Melnyk, tieless, with his collar ope -
