Project to turn former Grant school into francophone centre delayed
A decade-long plan to turn an old school on Richmond Road into a francophone community service centre has been delayed again, say organizers.
The target for opening the centre is now the fall of 2019, a year later than estimated, said Linda Savard, the president of the French-language public school board, which is overseeing the project.
Savard said it took longer than expected to get all of the city approvals for the old Grant Alternative School at 2720 Richmond Rd.
The province promised $8.95 -
New atlas of Indigenous Peoples reveals country 'before the lines were drawn'
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society unveiled its four-volume Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada on Thursday, a two-year labour that offers an unprecedented amount of information about Canada’s first peoples, their languages and culture, and a history that is both inspiring and tragic.
It is a view of Canada “before the lines were drawn,” in the words of RCGS president John Geiger.
The atlas was created in partnership with the Assembly of First Nations, the Inuit Tapiriit Ka -
Chagall's The Eiffel Tower, rescued from auction, goes on display Saturday at the National Gallery
The Eiffel Tower by Marc Chagall, which the National Gallery of Canada had intended to sell at auction this spring until an 11th-hour reversal of plans, will go on display on Saturday at the gallery.
The painting by the late and revered French-Russian painter will be on view in the European galleries on the gallery’s second floor, alongside Chagall’s earlier painting Memories of Childhood, a short statement from the gallery said Thursday.
Both paintings are to remain on vie -
Violent crime, costs of policing up in Ottawa
Violent crime and the cost of policing are up in Ottawa, according to the police service’s annual report for last year.
The overall crime rate in Ottawa has increased by three per cent — to 3,524 criminal offences per 100,000 residents — and all reported crime is up four per cent to 34,505 offences reported in 2017.
Police report that the violent crime rate jumped from 541 offences per 100,000 residents in 2016 to 649 offences per 100,000 people in 2017 — an increase -
Pillay: Canada has a duty to act on America's egregious border policies
The separation from their parents and detention of children in “cages” in Texas by U.S. officials was indefensible. It was also something else: torture.
Torture is described in Article 1 of the UN Convention Against Torture as including psychological torture, “intentionally inflicted” to “punish” an individual for the acts of another (in this case, the parent seeking asylum or crossing the border from Mexico and South America). It is most certainly &ldquo -
Reevely: Ford reaffirms pledge to keep Pickering nuclear station open … for the wrong reasons
Ontario will keep the elderly nuclear plant in Pickering running until 2024, Premier-designate Doug Ford repeated Thursday, for weird and un-conservative reasons.
“I believe in made-in-Ontario electricity and made-in-Ontario jobs,” Ford said at the plant.
There is nothing special about made-in-Ontario electricity. The Pickering plant’s energy doesn’t make your lights shine plaid or give off a faint mapley-piney aroma. There’s no difference between a j -
'I'm going to change my life,' Ethier says in apology to grieving Briere family
No matter what sentence Brandon Ethier receives for the murder of Joshua Briere, no prison term will fill the void Briere’s death has left on his grieving family.
“The jury gave the right verdict, guilty of murder in the second-degree, yet it still doesn’t bring back our Josh,” said his mother Holly Briere, who attended hearings with her family throughout the four-week trial.
Superior Court Justice Kevin Phillips will deliver the terms of Ethier’s life sentence Frid -

Gatineau police seek suspect in home invasion, stabbing
Gatineau police are seeking public assistance in locating a 22-year-old suspect in a “targeted” home invasion and stabbing June 17 that left the victim with serious injuries.
Police say the incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. at an apartment on Charny Street in Gatineau.
When the victim answered the door, the suspect attacked with a blade of some kind, continuing the attack inside the apartment.
The victim’s wounds are not considered life-threatening.

Whitcomb: Climate change politics are undermining federalism
Canada’s largest province is about to reject the federal climate change policy. Saskatchewan never accepted it and Alberta could reject it in 2019. Maybe it’s time for reflection.
The current policy calls for the provinces to implement a federal government plan. That, however, is a contradiction of federalism, a system which reflects the fact that the feds and the provinces have different interests. Policies to deal with pollution in Ontario may be inappropriate for Newfoundlan -
Cirque du Soleil's 'absolutely amazing' Corteo show returns to Ottawa
In late 2015, Marie-Christine Ménard-Bergeron thought her run as a globetrotting acrobat was over.
After more than four years as a Cirque du Soleil performer in Los Angeles, Germany and then throughout South America, Ménard-Bergeron bid the famed theatrical production company goodbye. Averse to Canadian winters, Ménard-Bergeron, who grew up in Brossard just outside of Montreal, moved to Sydney, Australia.
“I had a normal life again,” she recalls. “I ha -

In a report to the police board that is set to be received Monday, the police force acknowledges that the civilian watchdog cleared the officer of any criminal wrongdoing and decided not to lay any charges in January of this year.
This newspaper first reported on the Special Investigations Unit’s probe of the allegations in March 2017. The actual allegati -

Adam: Municipal race – so far, we're in for more of the same
Now that the provincial election is behind us, we can turn our attention to the Oct. 22 municipal election, but what a forgettable one it is shaping up to be. The candidates will make a big deal of it, but there’s little to tickle the imagination. To think we’ll have to endure this campaign for four months.
Start at the top of the ticket and you’ll catch my drift. Mayor Jim Watson, to no one’s surprise, is running again, but consider his challengers so far: Bernard Couchm -

Passes and info: ottawajazzfestival.com
Trumpeter Chris Botti is billed as the most popular American instrumentalist in the world, with a reputation for crowd-pleasing shows, as Ottawa music fans have witnessed during past appearances at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival. But the same showmanship that endears him to audiences of all ages tends to foster disdain among jazz purists. In an interview -

Renovation Transformation: Cottage-like redo at The Cameron restaurant nods to the past
The opening of Ottawa’s new restaurant The Cameron was less of a grand unveiling and more like a welcome home.
As doors opened for the season at The Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club (OTLBC) so did those of the restaurant nestled in its upstairs dining hall. The space has changed hands over many years but never has it seen as dramatic a transformation as it did this summer.
The Cameron updated the almost century-old space into a modern, yet cozy mess hall reflecting the rich history atta -

Meet the father of 911 in Ottawa
The 911 emergency call service has been around so long that it’s difficult to remember a time when it wasn’t. But Dr. Justin Maloney certainly can — he was one of its first proponents in Ottawa, and, with a handful of others, fought for years to get it here.
Maloney was, and still is, an emergency doctor at The Ottawa Hospital — then the General — in the early 1980s. He was interested in improving Ottawa’s pre-hospital care, which he says wasn’t good the -
911 turns 30 in Ottawa: From Parliament Hill shooting to OC Transpo crash, operators have heard it all
The caller’s voice sounded muffled over the phone.
Did he have something tied over his mouth? Was he the victim of a robbery?
From her desk inside the 911 emergency call centre at the Elgin Street police station, Carole Lachance could tell the call had come through the switchboard of the Governor General’s residence. Beyond that, she couldn’t identify the man’s location.
She kept him on the line for 30 minutes, though, devising a crude communication system — one &ld -
Today's letters: Château Laurier extension – no easy answers
Don’t put a box on back of the Château Laurier
Re: Heritage subcommittee wants council to send Château Laurier back to the drawing boar, June 18.
Thank you to the city councillors who rejected the recommendation of city staff to approve the latest plan for the Château Laurier addition. This is why you are elected. It would be good if you did this more often.
As to the design itself, the reason Ottawa citizens do not like the proposal is that it does not fit with the -

What exactly transpired next — and why — r -
