Roger Bednarchuk drove the most famous bus to ever stop on Parliament Hill — the one with the hostages, the one that delivered a scary new world.
It was April 7, 1989. Bednarchuk, then 55, was behind the wheel of a Greyhound bus leaving Montreal for New York City with 10 passengers. One of them, a Lebanese-born radical, Charles Yacoub, 32, approached the driver and pointed a .45 calibre revolver at his head.
Not yet out of the city, the drama had begun.

Province axes green energy rebate program
A green energy rebate program launched in 2017 by former premier Kathleen Wynne has been cancelled by her successor Doug Ford.
The newly-elected conservative premier-designate closed the rebate program under the Green Ontario Fund as of Tuesday.
The provincial website indicates if you’re already enrolled for a rebate, it will be honoured as long as a work agreement had been signed with a participating contractor for work that will be completed by Aug. 31, 2018.

Have you gotten an urgent-sounding message in Mandarin?
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has issued a bulletin warning that people in Canada are being targeted with calls claiming to come from the Beijing police, Interpol, the Chinese embassy or a delivery firm with a suspicious package.
The Chinese embassy in Ottawa issued a similar warning in April that fraudsters were targeting its citizens in Canada, Australia and the United States with claims including that a family member had been kille -

The Uber of sport: Local students developing play app to bring kids together
Josh Lindsay and his friends would like outdoor play to be just a click away.
Lindsay, a Grade 8 student at Henry Munro Middle School in Beacon Hill, attended a recent enrichment program at Carleton University, where his group was asked to work on a cause that was meaningful to them.
The four — Nate Contant, Matthew Robertson and Jasper Li are the other Grade 8 students in the group — wanted to do something to make young people in Ottawa more active.
They settled on the idea of an ap -
One of the largest cargo planes in the world makes a return visit to YOW
An Antonov An-124 Ruslan, one of the largest cargo planes in the world, has been frequenting Ottawa’s airport this week.
Krista Kealey, director of communications for the Ottawa International Airport Authority, said the plane was here all weekend. It leaves Wednesday but returns on Thursday.
“It’s contracted to do some cargo shipments,” Kealey said. “It happens. It’s very cool looking, and has been generating a lot of interest.”

Deficits: Should city trash pickup be put out to tender?
Another deficit in city-run garbage pickup has some councillors questioning if the city should stop automatically giving municipal public servants the work without having a contract competition.
“I don’t think the city should automatically do much of anything, especially when the results haven’t achieved what was hoped for, so no, we shouldn’t automatically do that. We should be giving careful scrutiny to it,” Coun. David Chernushenko said Tuesday after an environme -

Rockfest event relatively trouble-free, police say in final report
Although a 25-year-old man from Ontario died at last weekend’s Rockfest event in Montebello, police said the festival was largely free of serious problems.
Quebec police are still investigating the death of the young man found unconscious in his tent, but they don’t believe for the moment that there was any crime involved.
The rest of the event went pretty smoothly, the Sûreté du Québec reported Tuesday.
Their involvement was limited to:

Canadian submarine ends five-month mission
HMCS Windsor returns to Halifax after completing a 5-month deployment in the Euro-Atlantic region. The submarine will dock in Halifax Wednesday.
HMCS Windsor, a Victoria-class submarine, was on patrol on Operation PROJECTION, a Canadian Forces deployment that “demonstrates the strategic significance of the Euro-Atlantic region to Canada” while reinforcing Canada’s commitment to NATO, according to the Royal Canadian Navy.

Editorial: Do some homework before hiring these teachers
Ottawa school boards are hiring 500 new teachers for the next school year. Most of that number is due to expanding student numbers locally, or replacements for retiring teachers. But the hires are also troubling reminders of the disconnect that sometimes occurs between spending and results in Ontario public education.
The outgoing Liberal government decided that Ontario schools required a near-doubling of the number of guidance councillors helping students in grades 7 and 8. Locally, that means -
Cohen: Trump personifies how to lose both friends and influence
WASHINGTON – When the Communists won control of China in 1949, critics said that U.S. President Harry Truman had “lost” China. Their argument was this: Had the United States more strongly supported the Nationalists, China would have remained aligned to the West.
And so was born the loss of China, which has come to mean any ally who has slipped from the U.S. sphere of influence into another, such as Vietnam’s subsequent fall to the Communists.
There is a lot of loss and lo -
Chu and Simons: We need prison needle programs but they must be done right
Prison health is public health.
For 25 years, prisoners, prison and public health doctors, nurses and advocates have been shouting this refrain, trying to convince successive federal governments of the critical need for prison needle and syringe programs (PNSPs) in Canada. Until recently, the government and Correctional Service Canada (CSC) failed to act, despite clear and mounting evidence supporting such needle programs and their ability to prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis C infections -
Kingston student tried to ransom himself to parents: Police
A college student is facing a public mischief charge for trying to convince his worried parents that he had been taken hostage, police in Kingston allege.
Officers were called to St. Lawrence College June 14 to check on the 24-year-old student whose parents had reported him missing after receiving a text demanding a large sum of cash if they wanted to see him again.
When police didn’t find the student at the school, they tracked him down – “alone and well” – at -
Hwy 401 safety a key goal for new Napanee OPP boss
The Ontario Provincial Police’s new commander in Napanee, Insp. Scott Semple, is a local guy and he says he knows well one issue close to his clients’ heart.
With Highway 401 in Napanee’s backyard, and the Napanee OPP holding policing jurisdiction on a long, local stretch of that road, Semple would like to see traffic safety become an increasing priority.
“I know from talking to people that people feel the everyday person doesn’t feel much affected by crime, but the -

Talbot and Ashford: Sanctions against North Korea work against peace
It was a historic moment and new day for world peace and for peace on the Korean peninsula when U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in Singapore last week. Unfortunately, Canada’s reaction to the summit is lining us up to be on the wrong side of history.

Today's letters: Author Stephen Reid, playing the anthem, green energy
Outlaw-author will be missed
Re: Obituary, Stephen Reid rose to notoriety in Stopwatch Gang, won acclaim as author, June 13.
I was really saddened to learn of the death of Stephen Reid. He would not want mythologizing as an outlaw, nor sentimentality for the choices he made. He was a complex man, full of life and compassion for others. His writing was brilliant, and anyone who wants to understand him or simply enjoy terrific writing could do no better than to read his collection of essays entitl -
