Scottish band Belle and Sebastian have dropped out of September’s CityFolk festival in Ottawa, saying that they are taking time off from touring to focus on recording.
This will no doubt be disappointing to fans of the band, whose jangly, British indie-rock sound (think Oasis mixed with The Band) had earned them something of a cult following; the band had always garnered more critical praise than commercial appeal. Belle and Sebastian were one of the major draws of the festival, and were s

Heritage subcommittee wants council to send Château Laurier back to the drawing board
The city’s built-heritage subcommittee is recommending the architects of the Château Laurier addition go back to the drawing board.
The panel of councillors and heritage experts on Monday voted to recommend approval of the proposed design of a seven-storey addition, only if the hotel owner and city staff make the concept “more visually compatible” with the original building.
That means adding more Indiana limestone, making the north facade less imposing and altering the d -
Reevely: Hydro Ottawa dividend even bigger than expected, so councillors get free money to play with
The city has hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra-super-free bonus money to spend on green projects, which city council’s environment committee will dole out on Tuesday.
Well, OK, the money’s not free because there’s no such thing. It comes from Hydro Ottawa customers, from the “dividend” the company gives the city government every year even as it borrows hundreds of millions of dollars for expansions and upgrades. The dividend was $20.6 million last year -
'I will forever mourn,' mother testifies as son's killer awaits sentencing
Adrian Johnson’s mother can only begin to forgive her son’s killer once he completes his sentence, telling court Damien Dubien will get the “second chance at life” her own son was denied.
Dubien, 34, was charged with second-degree murder in November 2017 after Johnson, 45, was stabbed to death during a heated argument in a Lowertown crack den.
He pleaded guilty on May 28 to manslaughter after one day of witness testimony.
Dubien faced Johnson’s mother in court -
College of physicians investigating former fertility doctor Norman Barwin — again
Nearly four years after he resigned, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has launched an investigation into former Ottawa fertility doctor Norman Barwin — the third time it has investigated him.
Some former patients, who have been critical of the college’s failure to take significant action while Barwin was still practising, say the latest investigation is too little, too late.
Barwin, who was awarded an Order of Canada (now revoked) among other honours for his work in -
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect, while humidex could hit 37
Summer doesn’t even officially begin until Thursday’s solstice but Environment Canada predicts that the humidex could reach a sweltering 37 Monday before a cold front brings showers and the risk of a thunderstorm along with cooler air.
In the meantime, Ottawa Public Health is warning the public, especially the very young, very old and people who are homeless or have chronic illnesses, to take care to beat the heat.

Respect beleaguered parking officers, Gatineau police urge
In his 16 years as a parking officer, Daniel Monfils has weathered insults, dodged thrown eggs and even been the victim of physical assault from aggravated ticket recipients.
It’s not easy enforcing parking bylaws, and Gatineau police want you to know it — and to show some respect to the men and women who are just doing their jobs.
In a new video, Gatineau police ask you to imagine throwing mail back into a letter carrier’s face. “You would never do that!” the video -

Councillors call for better communication from ministry after Highway 417 off-ramp closure
Two city councillors say the province didn’t give them enough notice about a Highway 417 ramp closure, and are calling for better communication amidst the multi-year widening of the thoroughfare.
According to Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation provided barely a week’s notice that the widening of Highway 417 would require the eastbound Carling Avenue off-ramp to be closed starting Monday for a four-week period.

Hikers and bikers know the feeling of needing hot baths after muddy treks in the woods.
What if nature provided the bath, without a drop of water?
My partner and I recently dabbled in Shinrin-yoku and lived to tell of it. Shinrin-yoku is Japanese for bathing in the forest atmosphere. Of course, this is not bathing as we think of it, but taking in the forest through the senses of sight, smell, sound, taste and touch.

Charlebois: Buy Canadian? Good idea, but the trend won't last
In a nutshell, here is what happened following the G7 Summit: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau played nice with U.S. President Donald Trump, Trump tore Trudeau apart on social media, Trudeau played nice again. While Trudeau showed very Canadian diplomacy, poise and resilience, the Canadian public seemed to be taking another approach.
Everywhere on social media, Canadians are encouraging one another to go “Trump-free” – that is, to shop for groceries without buying a single America -

U.S. spent more than $8.6 billion on failed counter-drug strategy in Afghanistan
The U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan, John Sopko, talked last week about the lessons learned from the U.S. drug war in Afghanistan. The lessons learned outlined details of the drug trade in Afghanistan as well as the failure of the U.S. to deter that.
Years ago some Afghan analysts suggested that western nations purchase the opium crop from Afghan farmers and use it for medical production. That way the opium is used for medicinal purposes for pain relief and the Afghan farmers earn -
Perry: Parking politics is killing a safe route to school
It’s a sad story that says a lot about what we value as a city.
The Harmer Avenue pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Queensway needs to be rebuilt. This will take two years (no rapid bridge replacement here!). The Harmer bridge is a safe route for kids walking and cycling to Fisher Park/Summit Alternative middle school, the Fisher Park Community Centre and a popular park.
The City of Ottawa consulted and came up with a sensible plan. During the two years of construction, there would be -

Howard: Heron Gate's disadvantaged community needs bolder vision
Recent news that Timbercreek Asset Management will be bulldozing the homes of 105 Heron Gate households to build modern townhouses and apartments raises serious concerns that the City of Ottawa’s planning process lacks meaningful stakeholder consultation where disadvantaged communities are involved. Both Timbercreek and the city councillor should be doing more to bring forward a thoughtful and inclusive vision for community revitalization at Heron Gate.

Kaplan: Canada's productivity still lags in advanced industry
It’s been a while now since we’ve heard from the Liberals on the issue of innovation. Acute threats to the Canadian economy – from a budding trade war with the United States to ongoing doubts about the future of NAFTA – have forced the Liberals to step away from their original promise to create an “innovation economy,” and it’s entirely possible that the superclusters initiative announced last February will be the last we ever hear on the topic, at least -

Police and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are investigating after a 101-year-old woman reported being “walloped” with a towel by a caregiver at her Ottawa long-term care home.

Long road: A dad, his son, a bicycle and the search for a cure
On Father’s Day, Andrew Sedmihradsky pedalled a Dutch-made cargo bike onto Parliament Hill, the end of his bike trek to raise money for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research.
In the box at the front of the bike: his seven-year-old son, Max, who has the incurable muscle-wasting disease known as MDM.
Sedmihradsky, a University of Ottawa graduate who now lives in Hamilton, has been making the 600-kilometre ride for four years. His goal is to help find a cure for a disease that robs patients of -
Judge acquits former Library and Archives manager in alleged bid-rigging scheme
After nine years of investigation and litigation, the bureau couldn’t make its case that Barney Shum had indirectly enabled bid-rigging at Library and Archives Canada. It’s the Competition Bureau’s second major trial loss in three years. Still to come: two more proceedings on the same set of facts.

Obituary: Donald Whitton was a Second World War veteran, founding member of Lighthouse and NAC Orchestra

Lauded by musical giants such as Glenn Gould, who once called him “the perfect continuo player,” Whitton served as the NAC Orchestra’s principal
