A sneak peek at the relocation of the House of Commons to West Block
While Centre Block undergoes extensive renovations, MPs will move to the West Block in January 2019 to meet in a new interim House of Commons constructed within the rectangular interior courtyard of the edifice. It’s a 19th-century structure that pre-dates Confederation and was built long before modern building codes.

Major city contractor should get a timeout over Springhill dump scandal, councillor says
Tomlinson Group shouldn’t get more business from the city until the company owns up to the financial and environmental shame created by the Springhill landfill scandal, a city councillor says.
“Councillors need to do something about this, and yes, I agree, we should be closing the doors on Tomlinson until they fix this problem or at least sign an agreement with the city that they will take full responsibility for the contamination they create and to open their books to the city,&rdqu -

'A horrendous situation': Broken elevator at Ottawa retirement home leaves residents, families frustrated
Some residents at a Bells Corners retirement home have spent hundreds hiring a private company to carry them up and down the stairs over the past two months, while the building’s only elevator has been under repair.
The lack of an elevator means many residents of Thorncliffe Place, a three-storey residence, have been unable to leave their floors since April 9, when the elevator repair began, unless either they or the company that operates the building pays a patient transfer service to tra -
Mary O'Flaherty (1926-2018): Unsung heroine handled communications during 1980 'Canadian Caper' in Tehran
Mary O’Flaherty knew every secret of the “Canadian Caper,” the daring, cloak-and-dagger plan to smuggle six U.S. citizens to safety after the 1979 Iranian revolution.
As the communications officer for Canada’s embassy in Tehran, O’Flaherty was privy to the top secret messages between Ambassador Ken Taylor and the highest levels in Ottawa. She would have known the details of the bold CIA plan to sneak out the Canadians’ “house guests,” which was tol -
Victim's family says no one wins after Ethier found guilty in stabbing death of roommate
There were tears on both sides of the courtroom Friday as a jury found Brandon Ethier guilty of second-degree murder in the October 2016 slaying of his friend and roommate Joshua Briere.
Friends and families of both men wept quietly in court as the jury returned with the verdict Friday morning after three days of deliberations. Justice Kevin Phillips said Ethier will receive a life sentence after considering the jury recommendation for parole ineligibility, to be set between 10 and 25 years.

Reevely: Ford promises to kill Ontario's carbon market in the most damaging way
As soon as the new Progressive Conservative government is sworn in at the end of the month, it’ll tell Quebec and California that Ontario is bailing out of the carbon-emissions market it joined this year to help fight climate change, Premier-designate Doug Ford said Friday.
“I made a promise to the people that we would take immediate action to scrap the cap-and-trade carbon tax and bring their gas prices down,” Ford said in a Toronto news conference, where the only purpose was -

Take a peek inside West Block's House of Commons, MPs' new home for the next decade
The smell of fresh varnish hung in the air Friday as the government showcased the renovated West Block that will serve as “the heart of Canada’s democratic parliamentary system” for at least the next decade.
While Centre Block undergoes extensive renovations, MPs will move to the West Block in January 2019 to meet in a new interim House of Commons constructed within the rectangular interior courtyard of the edifice. It’s a 19th-century structure that pre-dates Confederati -

Police arrest two, seize loaded handgun after robbery, crash
A gunpoint mugging for cash and shoes wound up with the getaway car crashing into other vehicles in a pursuit through Sandy Hill, then two suspects in cuffs after a foot chase.
It began at about 4:15 p.m. at Rideau Street and King Edward Avenue when a 22-year-old man was approached by a man who produced a gun, police said. He demanded the victim’s money and a pair of newly-purchased shoes before fleeing in a Dodge Charger.
The victim flagged down a passing patrol officer who spotted the Ch -

Ethier found guilty in stabbing death of roommate
An Ottawa jury has found Brandon Ethier guilty of second-degree murder in the Oct. 22, 2016 stabbing death of his roommate Joshua Briere.
For the jury to reach the verdict on Friday, Justice Kevin Phillips said, the Crown must have proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Ethier, 29, caused Briere’s death, that he did so unlawfully, and, crucially, that he had “the state of mind required for murder.”
Phillips said it was “plain to see” that Ethier, whether it was -

Tiny Ottawa business school takes down much of its website
The online business college that operates from a Dymon Storage mailbox in Ottawa has taken down much of its website following publication of a story in this newspaper on Friday.
The Ottawa School of Business and Economics, run by founder and president Massoud Khazabi, removed large sections of its website identifying staff and faculty.
There is now no reference to Khazabi, whose full-time job is as an economic advisor at Transport Canada. He has also taught part-time at the University of Ottawa, -

Gormley: Canada, stop locking up migrant kids
It is nice at least that we can still be shocked by things in the United States. This is the sole positive observation that can be made about the grotesqueness of little migrant kids being put in cages.
What is odd, and not so positive, is that the imprisonment of migrant children in Canada does not spark much widespread indignation here. I don’t mean to suggest that because we lock some kids up too we are as bad as the United States. I only mean to say that because we think of ourselves a -

It's make or break time for Canadian Surface Combatant bidders
The companies bidding on the Canadian Surface Combatant program will provide Irving Shipbuilding with their “cured” bids by July 21.
Earlier this year, Postmedia reported that all three bidders in the competition failed to meet some of the federal government’s requirements.
The problems centre around technical issues. Some are minor but in other cases there is a view among defence industry officials that Canada is asking for too much in some areas such as radar, which may be ca -

Hyder: Why Doug Ford should go to Washington
Given their close personal relationship with Kathleen Wynne and her provincial Liberal Party, I suspect Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his senior staff aren’t thrilled that Doug Ford is now the premier-designate of Ontario – but they should be. He’s going to help save NAFTA.
Over the course of the past year, the Trudeau government has done an admirable job defending Canadian interests in what has become an increasingly acrimonious trade dispute with the United States. Foreig -

Spotlight is a weekly look at some of the people who are part of the Ottawa area’s arts community. This week, Bruce Deachman talks with choreographer and Tara Luz Danse artistic director and founder, Anik Bouvrette. Visit taraluzdanse.ca for more information.
“When I create now, the pieces are about imagination and creativity, and the audience has to make associations with what they see — their own personal associations. So when you come and see a show, you’re not going t -

Compact quarters: An architect's family of four embraces small-scale living in Vanier
When Erin Duncan purchased a small bungalow in Vanier she moved in with her dog and was enjoying the single life. She never imagined at the time that within a few years it would grow into a home for a family of four.
“We’ve learned to adapt and to embrace the tiny house movement,” laughs Duncan, an Ottawa architect. “Having a smaller footprint is better for the environment. As our children get older, we’ll have to be more creative with space and storage.”

Messages of support flood in after adult shaming of autistic child
BELLEVILLE — What began with public shaming has turned into a tide of support for a Belleville woman and her autistic son.
Ashley Wright and children Logan, 13, and Brinlee,11, were at Peterborough’s Riverview Park and Zoo June 10. During their time there, a stranger reacted rudely to Logan’s agitation.
That evening, Wright said, she wrote an open Facebook letter to the man, explaining Logan’s behaviour and the hurt the man’s reaction had caused.

Ottawa opens ALS centre amid 'massive' advance in basic research
The treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis has not advanced much since baseball great Lou Gehrig died of the disease in 1941, a story that transcended the Yankees and sport in general.
But hope is building, with more progress in the past 10 years than in the previous 60. Ottawa is onboard, with the opening in May of a neuromuscular research centre, based at the Civic campus at The Ottawa Hospital, where muscular dystrophy and ALS will get special attention.
Experts say the exact cause o -
'My dad’s been my biggest hero my whole life'
The first time we met Carol Skinner in 2015, she was so relentlessly positive, so often smiling in the face of approaching death, the pair of us (writer, photographer) left the apartment holding back tears.
(Strange. Was she not the ailing one?) Three years later, she’s very much alive — surprise, surprise — and still fighting the good fight against ALS.
“I was living as though I was dying,” she said of the early months with the terminal illness. “I got my aff -
Egan: As ALS steals his daughter, a father helplessly watches on
ALS kills 80 per cent of sufferers within two to five years, a terrifying statistic for Carol Skinner, on the eve of her fifth anniversary.
Today she uses a walker inside her small apartment — a wheelchair everywhere else — and doesn’t drive or work anymore, or even cut her own food, or wash her own hair. On a good day, she can write her name. On a bad day, there are things she can hardly speak of: “I’m scared to death.”

Akwesasne Mohawk council agrees to $45M settlement for seaway flooding
AKWESASNE — Just in time for the 60th anniversary of the flooding of their land to help create the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has approved a $45-million settlement offer from the federal government in compensation for the damages caused by the project.
The agreement now goes to a community-wide referendum later this year.
Besides the money, the federal government is also giving back ownership of expropriated lands back to Mohawk Council control. The properties are -
Spencer: Don't boycott the Americans, engage them
It’s a sign of Canadians’ evolving good global sense that many who vehemently opposed free trade with the United States 30 years ago are today insulted by Donald Trump’s crude protectionism. We recognize that we’re a trading nation – in fact, if Trump and company are to be believed, we’re downright diabolical about it. Our prime minister is “dishonest” and a negotiating backstabber, we’re told. It gets our normally cool Canadian blood boiling -

'It's definitely spiking now': More people in Ottawa getting targeted by gold scam
When it comes to things you probably shouldn’t purchase on the street, precious gold jewelry places pretty high on the list.
And yet, some gold buyers say there’s been an uptick in the number of Ottawans targeted by scammers selling fake gold for a quick buck.
“It’s definitely spiking now,” said Erik Ramsey, owner of the Swap N’ Shop pawnshop on Merivale Road. “I’ve been seeing it come through the store for the past year or two — but nothing -
'We will always be grateful': American saved by 1980 'Canadian Caper' says thank you to Canada
Kathleen Stafford has watched with a heavy heart the chill in Canada-U.S. relations after President Donald Trump’s acerbic, post-G7 tweet storm. Nearly 40 years ago, a small team of Canadians risked everything to save Stafford and five other Americans fleeing for their lives during the Iranian revolution.
“No other country or people would have ‘unreservedly’ stepped up to protect us like your people, embassy and government did,” Stafford said in telephone and email -

Orléans grandfather awaits sentencing for killing sleeping son
John Mcrae spent his last weekend as a free man with his grandchildren at a barbecue in the backyard of his Orléans home.
He wanted to spend as much time with them because a jury was days away from deliberating the killer’s fate.
John Mcrae, 73, slit his son’s throat as he slept off a day of drinking on the living room couch on July 7, 2015. He was fed up with his angry, always-drunk son and figured he’d be better off dead. Even told the neighbour his son deserved it.
