Synthetic heart tissue researched in Ottawa has potential to change lives of heart attack patients
Inside a lab at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, researchers are creating biosynthetic heart tissue that might some day change the lives of patients with damaged hearts.
Federal officials watched Wednesday as a member of the team working on the project demonstrated how the liquid bio-material becomes gel-like when warmed to body temperature. When it is injected into the heart, it acts as a kind of “scaffolding” that reinforces weakened heart tissue, said Dr. Erik Suuronen, l -

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Wednesday night
In a sure sign of summer, city splash pads open Wednesday but it looks like Mother Nature has her own way of cooling off with showers and a thunderstorm warning in the forecast.
Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm warning for the Ottawa-Gatineau region at about 5 p.m.
“Conditions will become favourable for severe thunderstorms to develop this afternoon as a cold front moves through,” the agency had warned earlier in the day. “The main threat is damaging wind gusts of 90 to -

Reevely: Police, potholes and trains — pre-election goodies sprinkle out of city hall
In barely a week, Mayor Jim Watson has found more than $2 million to fill more potholes, hire more police officers and study a light-rail extension to Barrhaven. An election is in the air.
The pothole money is skimmed from cash that turned out not to be needed for a bunch of under-budget capital projects. Rather than putting the money into reserves, the city’s going to spend $1 million more on superficial road repairs — on top of the $10 million city councillors decided to spend out -

Public prompted to clear out cars after 'rash' of thefts
Ottawa police are warning the public not to leave valuables in their cars after “a rash of theft from vehicles” this year.
According to police, there have been around 1,600 thefts from vehicles reported since the start of the year — an average of more than 10 every day. Half of those, police said, took place downtown.
“Thieves are literally going door to door looking for an unlocked vehicle, and once they gain entry, they go through the entire car, including the trunk,&rd -
Memories of Montebello: Sum 41's Deryck Whibley recalls his return to mass crowds
It was a hot and sticky summer music festival in front of tens, nay, hundreds of thousands — a rockin’ good time for the fist-pumpers, the head-nodders and the shirtless moshers alike.
And it should have felt like home to Deryck Whibley. But the frontman of Canadian punk band Sum 41 says it’s more likely he was, well, at least briefly, quite terrified.
Two years ago, Whibley and the boys were about to play what was then known as the Amnesia Rockfest in Montebello, Que -
Ceremony to be held Friday for cutting of steel on the first Joint Support Ship
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Procurement Minister Carla Qualtrough will take part in a steel cutting ceremony for the first of two Joint Support Ships. That is happening on Friday at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards.
Taxpayers will have to spend $1.1 billion extra on new navy supply ships, the Liberal government recently acknowledged.
Previously the cost of building the two Joint Support Ships at Seaspan shipyards had been pegged at $2.3 billion.

Council grants Coun. Jody Mitic a leave of absence
Jody Mitic, the councillor for Innes ward, is officially on a leave of absence from city hall with an unknown return date.
Council voted unanimously Wednesday to grant Mitic a leave of absence after the councillor and Canadian war veteran provided written notice to the clerk that he can’t attend committee and council “for the foreseeable future.” His notice also came with medical documentation.
On Tuesday, Mitic posted on Facebook, “I will be off these means for 90 days.& -
Glavin: Trump and Kim do all despots a favour
After leaving no sidebar unturned, not one prominent expert unquestioned and not a single outlandish remark unparsed, the efforts of thousands of journalists assigned to chase down every conceivable angle to the reality-television spectacle in Singapore choreographed by U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un this week leave only one small question unanswered.
What the hell just happened?
One reason the question is practically impossible to answer is that you’d have -

Library faces court challenge over cancellation of controversial film
The organizer of a screening of the controversial film Killing Europe at the Ottawa Public Library last November has applied for a judicial review of the library’s decision to cancel the showing.
Madeline Weld claims in her application, which was filed Monday in Toronto, that the library’s decision to cancel “violated (her) constitutional right to free expression” as well as the rights of the audience to see the film.
Weld argues the library “acted arbitrarily -

Keep Trump out: Build the wall
Re: Trump slams ‘dishonest & weak’ Trudeau, backs out of G7 consensus, June 9.

Fatal crashes involving transports up 25% in 2018, OPP launches safety blitz
Twenty-five people have been killed in Ontario crashes involving transport trucks so far this year, a 25 per cent increase over last year, the OPP reports as the force launches a blitz Wednesday aimed at bad driving and “dangerous habits.”
As Operation Corridor hits all of Ontario’s major truck routes June 13-14, the OPP reports that officers have tackled 3,047 collisions involving transport trucks this year.
The force commended the truckers who are committed to safe driving an -

Renfrew OPP is warning of a new twist on a familiar scam after fraudsters got a senior to send them $5,000 in digital currency by threatening that he was facing arrest for unpaid taxes.
The man in his 70s in the Township of McNab Braeside got a call from someone pretending to represent the Canada Revenue Agency, OPP reported. The fraudster told the man that he would be arrested if he didn’t pay the agency.
He was instructed to go to an Ottawa hotel that has a Bitcoin ATM and transfer the f -

Environment Canada issued a thunderstorm watch for the region from Pembroke to Cornwall, including Ottawa-Gatineau, at about 10 a.m.

Mayor Watson wants council to spend money on studying Barrhaven LRT
It was only a matter of time before city hall addressed the elephant on the LRT blueprint: Barrhaven.
Mayor Jim Watson and Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder announced they’ll ask council on Wednesday to earmark $600,000 to go toward an environmental assessment for an LRT extension from Algonquin College to Barrhaven.
An environmental assessment is the first necessary step to building an LRT line, but the actual construction is likely many years away. Watson has said the obvious Stage 3 LRT projec -

“I miss my dad with all my heart and soul and the fact that my son never got the chance to meet his grandpa hurts deeply,” Collison, of Cornwall, said in an email exchange with t -
Ottawa's symphony orchestra steps into the future with a 3D printing contest
It is fitting that the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra will open its new season on Nov. 4 at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum. A new work written by Montreal/New York composer Harry Stafylakis, whose music has been described as “an amalgamation of the clas -

What is 3D printing?
Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing is a process by which a three-dimensional product is made via a plotter that moves along x, y and z axes, adding material — commonly any number of plastics, polymers or metals — as it builds layer upon layer.
The process dates back to the early 1980s, and ongoing developments have added greatly to the types of material that can be used and the speed of the printers, although the latter are largely still too slow for mass production. B -
