John Mcrae is either a cold-blooded killer who slit his sleeping son’s throat, or a frail 73-year-old man who, after years of elder abuse, killed his violent and drunk son in self-defence.
The jury that will decide the fate of the Orléans great-grandfather was offered two wildly different storylines about the evening he killed his son, Michael.
The defence would have the jury believe the evidence clearly establishes that the elder McCrae had endured years of abuse at the hands of hi

Pushed out of Tim's — fired for too many sick days
“Precarious” is a fancy word to describe conditions facing low-income workers these days. “Fired” was the translation for Shauntel Snowden one day last month.
“I went into the office having a job and I walked out of the office with no job. Not even five minutes.”
Shauntel Snowden, 24, is at home at her kitchen table, holding back the tears. She says she was fired from Tim Hortons on May 29, midway through her shift.
The reason? She’s taken too many sick -

Gatineau to cut down all its ash trees, sick or not
Gatineau has given up on trying to save its ash trees and has contracted with a private firm to cut them all down, sick or not, in the next three years.
This will remove another 40,000 trees from the city, in addition to close to 30,000 trees (including some elms) that are already gone.
The city has concluded there’s just no way to stop the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect with no North American enemies that has eaten its way across the U.S. Midwest, then much of Ontario, and now Gati -

Memories and metal: Montebello Rockfest founder Alex Martel reflects on the wild ride it's been
Even a rock festival that draws 200,000 people can have its quiet moments.
Montebello Rockfest founder Alex Martel recalls one such moment as possibly his favourite memory in the 13 years he’s been putting on his “punk-rock Woodstock” in a small Quebec village an hour east of Ottawa.
As he tells it, Tim Armstrong of the punk band Rancid had found a spot outside the festival grounds, away from the din and the dirt, and started to play his acoustic guitar.

Suspicious death at nursing home ruled natural: New details in the death of Violet Lucas
Staff at the nursing home where Violet Lucas was found dead, with her head wedged between her mattress and a guardrail, moved her body before the coroner arrived.
The investigating coroner could not view Lucas’s body as it was found at Extendicare Laurier Manor on Montreal Road and could not rely on photographs, either, because the staff didn’t take any before moving her body.

Stop playing the anthem at pro sports games
One of the more depressing consequences of the increasing polarization of our political and social landscape is the way this polarization is seeping out of the realms of partisan politics, and more and more into our daily lives.
There’s no better example of this than the controversy around anthem protests in the NFL.
In 2016, then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, in a protest against racial injustice, refused to stand during the pre-game national anthem. Other players joi -

Today's letters: Defence spending, influencing Trump, rules for Highway 401 truckers
Defence spending incompetent
Re: CF-18 radar support in state of disrepair, June 6.
The incompetence displayed by the federal government on defence spending and procurement boggles the mind. Just last week, the defence minister admitted that in 2017 his department had spent only 60 per cent of its budget for the year, i.e. no less than $2.3 billion remained unspent.
Now we learn that the ground radars needed in support of the CF-18 fighter fleet are in a parlous state but replacements are y -
Adam: Château Laurier extension – Can we please just get on with it?
Enough already. Let’s just get on with building the new wing at the Château Laurier Hotel.
With hyperbolic flourish, Heritage Ottawa has called the latest proposal for am addition “the most disgraceful act of vandalism of our generation.” It adds: “The revised design fails to resolve – or even address – the underlying flaw that impaired all of the previous attempts.”
But the group cannot hold the redevelopment of the venerable hotel hostage. If aft -
