Flying with Parachute: 42 national sport bodies adopt new concussion protocols
National sport organizations are starting to get their act together on a common set of concussion protocols.
Kirsty Duncan, minister of science, sport and persons with disabilities, announced Friday in conjunction with Parachute Canada that 42 of the 56 Canadian sport organizations funded by Sport Canada have adopted the new concussion guidelines and policies.
The announcement was made at the outset of a sport concussion workshop at the Canadian Museum of Nature.

With election defeat, veteran Bob Chiarelli exits political stage
“If you’re not prepared to lose, don’t run,” Bob Chiarelli told his supporters Thursday night, announcing he was done with politics after a nearly unbroken 31-year run in public office.
Looking tanned and fit, the silver-haired 76-year-old political veteran gave a thank you to his family and supporters, a gracious congratulations to his opponents — the Ottawa West-Nepean contest wouldn’t be decided until, literally, the final polls came in — and exited t -

Ottawa Fringe Festival
June 14-24, various downtown locations
ottawafringe.com
With 57 shows over 11 days, there’s no better time to binge on theatre than the Ottawa Fringe Festival.“This is the time when everybody sees the most theatre they can,” says Brie McFarlane, an Ottawa writer who founded the website, New Ottawa Critics, as a go-to spot for theatre reviews in the nation’s capital. Ottawa's Liberal get-along gang broken up after provincial election
The most important politician in Mayor Jim Watson’s professional life is now the veteran Progressive Conservative MPP in suburban Ottawa.
“I have a good relationship with Lisa MacLeod,” Watson said at city hall Friday, a day after the Tories won a majority government in the provincial election and MacLeod won 45 per cent of the votes in her Nepean riding.
“I’ve known her for probably 15 or 20 years, and I suspect she will play a senior role in a cabinet and she will -

Editorial: Make suicide prevention a priority
Two well-loved celebrities died by suicide this week, according to news reports. Kate Spade, the fashion designer, was found dead in New York City on Tuesday. Then, Friday morning, chef Anthony Bourdain was found dead in a French hotel room.
It’s a reminder of the toll mental illness can take on people – even those with lives many admire, and who have the resources to access good care. In 90 per cent of suicide cases, mental-health issues are present, says the Mental Health Commissio -
Inquest date set in 2016 death of highway worker
The coroner’s office has scheduled a three-day inquest into the death of a highway construction worker more than two years ago.
Danniel William Milton, 42, was working on a highway project in Renfrew County in April 2016 when he was hit by a vehicle. Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory.
Beginning Sept. 17, a jury will hear the circumstances of his death in Renfrew, and will be able to make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. It is expected to hear from a -
Order's Up on ending restaurant sexual harassment in Ottawa
Ottawa restaurants, women’s advocates and unions are cooking up an end to sexual intimidation, harassment and assault in the industry.
The campaign, dubbed “Order’s Up,” launched this week with public service announcements and a website offering an anonymous reporting tool to gather stories from local survivors.
“One of the things that we heard in our engagement session with industry workers in March was that they just didn’t know who they can talk to,&rd -
Newcomer Harden says he's ready to work hard for Ottawa Centre
Minutes after he was declared the winner in a race that saw him oust Liberal incumbent Yasir Naqvi, Joel Harden picked up an acoustic guitar emblazoned with stickers and led supporters in a rousing rendition of the tune “Lean On Me.”

Bidding wars and madness: Inside Ottawa's sellers' real-estate market
If you want to understand some of the forces now gripping Ottawa’s real-estate market, take a stroll down Fentiman Avenue in the heart of the leafy district known as Rideau Gardens.
It’s a quiet stretch of carefully maintained, two-storey homes across the canal from Lansdowne Park. Fentiman Avenue hosts an older neighbourhood, with sidewalks on both sides of the street and garages tucked behind the homes. It is very nearly quaint — and outsiders have been willing to pay a fair -
Naqvi credits Ottawa Centre residents for helping make him 'a better human being'
When Yasir Naqvi learned he would be defeated in Thursday’s provincial election, he kissed and hugged his wife, Christine McMillan, and headed for his campaign party at the Carleton Tavern, where he joked with supporters that his family, which includes their two children, finally have their husband and father back.
The past four years must have been particularly hectic for the departing Ottawa Centre MPP, heading up ministries with hot files, like the condition of jails and the laws that g -

Reevely: Doug Ford's first things
Premier-designate Doug Ford’s transition team has some heavy lifting to do before he and his Progressive Conservative cabinet take office on June 29.
Led by Ottawa lobbyist and former provincial and federal conservative aide Chris Froggatt, the group Ford announced will ease him into power includes former minister John Baird, who has experience in everything from energy to environment policy to shepherding laws through the legislature. That knowledge will be useful as Ford and the Tories w -

Kurl: It really is Ford Nation now. But how did it happen?
Despite Doug Ford’s highly unfavourable ratings, despite a lawsuit from his sister-in-law, despite an uncosted, vague platform, nothing shook Ontario voters from the change they sought.
But why Ford? Why not Andrea Horwarth, who, like the Las Vegas Golden Knights, outperformed expectations only to fall short in the final round?
Indeed, Ford, who emerged the winner of a hasty, messy Progressive Conservative leadership race following Patrick Brown’s even messier ouster in January, -

Dawson: Why the Senate was right to push back on pot legalization
It’s hard to gauge just how much marijuana legalization is going to change Canada. Some cities have already acquired a uniquely pungent perfume, and pot is remarkably easy to get, though edibles – rather appealing for those less keen on sucking flaming leaves into their lungs – will remain illegal at first.
What’s clear is that this whole kerfuffle has been the sort of overcomplicated big-government hullaballoo that would’ve made fine satire.
But progress: On T -

Gen. Vance to grieving families – boards of inquiries aren’t about you
Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jon Vance has a message for the grieving families, who hope to get closure from military boards of inquiry established to look into the deaths of their loved ones.
It’s not about you, the general says.
“Boards of inquiry are designed to inform the chief of defence staff and the Armed Forces about what changes need to be made, what went wrong, does anybody need to be held accountable, and so on,” Vance told journalists on Thursday. “And so, -
Arboretum exec apologizes for 'emotional harm' to women, resigns after 'bad date' poster controversy
Rolf Klausener, the creative director of Arboretum Festival, has apologized for “emotional hurt” to women and is resigning, a week after anonymous posters labelling him a “bad date” appeared around downtown Ottawa.
In a post on his Facebook page Friday morning, Klausener addressed the accusations directly, acknowledging that he’s been “the worst version of myself for a long time.”

Capital unemployment remains at lowest level in more than three decades
The Capital Region’s jobless rate remained at a historically low 4.4 per cent in May, the same as in April, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
It’s the lowest unemployment rate in at least 31 years. Data compiled prior to 1987 reflects different metropolitan boundaries and isn’t comparable, the federal agency says. Data for metropolitan areas is adjusted for seasonal influences but based on the average of the three most recent monthly samples.

The tributes to Brian Browne keep rolling in
I’ve culled the four tributes below to the late Ottawa pianist Brian Browne, who died this week, from Facebook. I’m sure there are many, many others.
Catherine O’Grady, executive producer of the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival
Brian Browne was a wonderful human. He was, as everyone knows, a fabulous pianist. He was also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. He was quick with a joke, quick with a smile, and always ALWAYS great to be around. The many times he played at the jazz -

Reevely: Ottawa moves from big player to bit player at Ontario's cabinet table
The Progressive Conservatives romped to a big win across Ontario on Thursday, no thanks to Ottawa.
The national capital’s Liberals and New Democrats showed stronger than most people expected. Half the rump Liberal caucus is from this city now, along with the first New Democrat elected here since 1990.
The vaunted “Team Ottawa” for the Liberals is still mostly intact in Marie-France Lalonde, John Fraser and Nathalie Des Rosiers, but its influence on government is gone.

Gormley: When Trump jokes about war, he whets the appetite for other battles
Donald Trump doesn’t tell jokes. He does talk quite a lot about war. But when Trump invoked a war from long ago as justification for a trade war now, some of us laughed at what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the “quip.”
Hahaha. A famous paranoiac controls the White House and alludes to his closest neighbour and ally being a target and a threat immediately prior to its hosting of a critical international summit, get it?
Well, maybe it is something like hilarious to suggest -
Antiques: A decade later, we revisit standout pieces that were worth the investment
This is another occasional feature on This Old Thing where we revisit items submitted for appraisal some years ago, and see how their values have changed. This week we look at a paperweight, a vase and a stove, comparing their current values with those of nine and a half years ago.
Q: My late grandmother used this glass paperweight as a bathroom doorstop for over 50 years. We know it’s a Baccarat carpet ground millefiori paperweight made in France in 1848. It has a diameter of about -

Cornwall, striking CUPE unions announce tentative deals
The Canadian Union of Public Employees announced Friday morning that it has reached tentative agreements with the City of Cornwall for each of the four striking groups of city workers.
“Bargaining committees representing library workers, paramedics, outside and inside workers will be recommending the settlements to their memberships for ratification,” said Andrea Addario, union spokesperson in a statement.
What is in these agreements will not be shared publicly until after union memb -
Bright sunshine greets new Ontario government
Election weary Capital residents were greeted with bright sunny skies Friday.
And the clear weather is expected to last through the weekend, albeit slight on the cool side.
Friday’s high is expected to be a cool 22 C, with a very high UV index of 8.
The low should drop to a bracing 10 C.
Saturday looks sunny, with a few clouds, and a high of 23 C, dropping to a low of 9 C overnight.
The appropriately named Sunday is expected to be just-so, bright and clear with a high of 22 C,

High-profile Liberal incumbent Naqvi gets rolled by NDP's Harden in Ottawa Centre
Ontario Attorney General Yasir Naqvi got served in his home riding of Ottawa Centre in Thursday’s provincial election as voters ousted the Liberal incumbent and gave the NDP a shot at representing the national capital’s core at Queen’s Park.
The NDP’s Joel Harden cruised to victory, taking 46 per cent of the vote with late polls still to report on Thursday.
A jubilant Harden arrived to a City Centre warehouse space soon after polls closed and was immediately enveloped in -

MacDougall: Dear Conservatives, it’s time to hug some reporters
A sparse public schedule. Terse media availabilities. A dearth of interviews. Rallies limited to supporters. For a man purporting to do it “for the people,” Doug Ford didn’t bother doing it for too many people during his campaign.
Were Ford’s tactics that of the classic front-runner, or signs of a tour trying to manage its biggest liability? It doesn’t much matter now that the result is secured.
Irrespective of intent or outcome, there are lessons to be drawn for Co -

Bill to legalize recreational marijuana passes Senate with controversial amendments
The bill that would make Canada the first major country in the world to legalize recreational marijuana has sailed through the Senate.
Still, some political gamesmanship remains before Canadians can shop at legal pot stores.
The Senate approved the Cannabis Act, Bill C-45, on Thursday night with more than 45 amendments. Many are technical in nature, but several others would make substantial and controversial changes.
If the House of Commons accepts the amendments, the bill could become law quick -
