A man in his 50s was taken to hospital with head and hand injuries on Wednesday afternoon after a motorcycle crash on Industrial Road near the Ottawa train yards.
Ottawa paramedics tweeted that, at about 3:40 p.m., the man suffered a “medical incident prior to collision.”
The man was taken to the trauma centre, where he was listed as in serious, but stable condition.
No other motorists were involved in the crash, and the scene has been cleared.

On the ropes, Liberal John Fraser turns to black and yellow anti-Ford signs
John Fraser was out of the red and into the black Wednesday.
The Liberal incumbent in Ottawa South rolled out simple black and yellow campaign signs bearing no resemblance to Liberal election material. The new signs say, “Stop Doug Ford Vote John Fraser.” There’s no Liberal logo and not a splash of Liberal red.
Fraser scoffed at the notion that he’s turning his back on his party.
“I have thousands of red signs out there with Liberal, and my name and my face all over -

Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has joined the campaign on behalf of a Russian scientist living in Gatineau who says she will be persecuted or killed if sent back home.

Canadian Forces withholding information from grieving parents prompts cover-up concerns
Grieving parents trying to get answers from the Canadian Forces, only to be stonewalled or treated poorly, is a story that has continued to emerge over the years.
My colleague Lee Berthiaume of the Canadian Press reports on yet another such case with his recent article chronicling how the mothers of three Royal Military College students who died two years were trying – unsuccessfully – to get answers from the Canadian Forces. The mothers say they are angry and frustrated that t -

Glavin: Why the West must remember the Tiananmen massacre
The anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen massacre came and went this week, barely noticed, unmentioned in official circles in Canada, legally unmentionable in China and expunged by algorithm, in advance, from Sina Weibo’s millions of overseas social media accounts. It is as though the event never even happened. And in a way, it never did.
When it is remembered at all, the event is commonly understood to have been a riot in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square that was brutally put down. A journal -

Pianist Brian Browne — the dean of Ottawa's jazz scene — has died
Pianist Brian Browne, the dean of Ottawa’s jazz scene, died Tuesday in hospice care at the age of 81.
A fabulous natural musician with a lovable rascal’s personality and the gift of gab, Browne for decades inspired peers and fans with his personal and artistic honesty and deep blues feeling. He scaled the jazz heights in Toronto in the 1960s, lived a more obscure life marred by drugs and alcohol for years after that, but remade himself as a clean, sober person and profound artist in -

'It was just like an earthquake. It just suddenly happened': Survivors recount Highway 401 bus crash
It happened in a matter of seconds: All was normal, and then it was “like an earthquake.”
Survivors of Monday’s bus crash near Prescott could not explain what went wrong as they struggled to piece together what happened, in a mere moment, that afternoon.
Ontario Provincial Police said a Union Tour Express bus crashed into a rocky embankment on the side of the westbound Highway 401 at 2:30 p.m. Monday, just west of Prescott. The bus was carrying 37 tourists, all from China.

Cooking, travel in Vietnam led chef to write sumptuous vegetarian cookbook
For chef and Canadian expat Cameron Stauch, the best part of writing his first cookbook was the research.
While he and his wife Ayesha Rekhi, a Canadian diplomat, were based a few years ago in Hanoi in northern Vietnam, Stauch, always a curious traveler, made several trips to central and southern Vietnam, toting a camera and notepad to delve into the unheralded vegetarian cuisine that flourished in those regions.

Here is Browne, the consummate ballad player, playing some months ago at Lauzon Music, one of his haunts in Ottawa. An obituary is in the works, but until then, here is my lengthy 2003 profile of Browne.

Boyd: Why the G7 must take bold action on plastic pollution
Canada, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, deserves credit for prioritizing plastic pollution in the lead-up to the G7 summit.
It is likely that the leaders’ declaration will embrace a long-term vision for zero plastic waste.
However, a leaders’ statement is only a first step. The G7 meeting offers Canada a platform to demonstrate genuine leadership by boldly advocating for a new global plastics treaty. Without a comprehensive and enforce -

Wynne is likely to continue as premierRe: Ontario prepares to vote for least worst option, June 2
Recently, I bet a colleague of mine (we share space at a senior’s residence) 50 cents that this time next week Kathleen Wynne would still be premier of this province.
She may have given up running to be the new premier, but she will still be a member of the provincial Liberal party, she probably will be re-elected, will still be the leader of these Liberals, and hence their leader, or premier. -
