'I didn’t mean to kill him,' Brandon Ethier testifies in second-degree murder trial
Brandon Ethier claimed he only meant to threaten Joshua Briere, to “scare him off” during an argument, telling the jury in his second-degree murder trial he then fatally stabbed his roommate by accident.
“I wanted to threaten him. I didn’t mean to kill him,” Ethier said on the witness stand Monday, when he gave his account of the booze- and cocaine-fuelled October 2016 birthday party at the Clyde Avenue apartment he shared with Briere.
Three party guests testified l -

Firefighters douse flames at five-unit building in Sarsfield
Quick action by firefighters prevented flames from spreading through a five-unit building in Sarsfield, the Ottawa fire department reported Monday.
A 911 call reporting smoke from an electrical outlet summoned fire crews to 2870 Colonial Rd. at 10:53 a.m.
In a “rapid intervention,” firefighters tracked the fire to an electrical panel in one unit and extinguished it while colleagues evacuated the other residents of the building.
The fire was under control at 11:21 a.m., but crews cont -

Major bus crash near Prescott leaves dozens injured
The westbound lanes of Highway 401 have been closed near Prescott after a bus crashed into a ditch, leaving dozens injured.
The Ontario Provincial Police said emergency services are on scene at the crash site Monday, just west of Prescott, near Edward Street.
An air ambulance has also been dispatched to the scene and Ornge officials have warned that as many as 30 people have been hurt, some seriously. Ornge officials were not immediately available Monday to confirm what they’ve found -
Subtone at the National Arts Centre (concert review)
Given that its five members are scattered not just in two Germany cities but also as distantly as New York City and St. John’s, Nfld., when the quintet called Subtone is able to reunite and play a few times each year, it’s a special occasion from the get-go.
But the band’s music was all the more impressive and lucid in Ottawa last month at the National Arts Centre’s Fourth Stage because of the big run-up that had preceded the performance. By then, the group had the bulk o -
Today's letters: Campaigning, alcohol in corner stores and Zibi
The campaigns, they are a-changin’
Like everything else in today’s society, it seems the way politicians campaign has also changed.
I remember when the candidate would come to your front door, ring the doorbell, hand you some literature and have a chat. Or at least one of their campaign representatives.
As a resident of Barrhaven, I have come after work in the past week to three annoying campaign messages left on my phone. Two from Green party candidate James O’Grady and one fr -
Elfeitori: Why Merrilee Fullerton should apologize for tweets
To err is human, to forgive divine.
But you can’t forgive without first being offered an apology.
Merrilee Fullerton, the Progressive Conservative candidate in Kanata-Carleton, has so far avoided apologizing for a series of stigmatizing tweets against Muslims that were discovered earlier on in the election.
Other than an accusatory and defensive statement issued a few weeks ago rejecting concerns raised by the Liberal party, Fullerton has yet to publicly distance herself from views that bo -
Morneau says U.S. tariffs not conducive to helping G7 economies

Kassam: The NHL is on the wrong side of history on concussions
With the Stanley Cup finals well underway, the NHL is celebrating one of the most intriguing storylines in its history.
The Las Vegas Golden Knights have a chance to become the only expansion team in major professional sports, excluding MLS, to win a championship in its inaugural season. This collection of misfits and throwaways has taken the sports world by storm, despite many hockey fans’ desire to see Alexander Ovechkin finally win a Cup.
Most believe that this series will be the kind o -
I will stand for Ontario Liberal leader: David Henderson
BROCKVILLE — If elected MPP in three days, Liberal candidate David Henderson will put his name forward to succeed Kathleen Wynne as leader of the embattled Ontario Liberal Party, Henderson said Monday morning.
He made the comments in a brief media event convened in the wake of Wynne’s surprise statement on the weekend in which she acknowledged she will not win Thursday’s provincial election.
Wynne urged voters nonetheless to support local Liberals in order to pre -
Heritage Ottawa pans latest attempt at Chateau Laurier addition
Heritage Ottawa has come out swinging against the latest plans for an addition to the venerated Château Laurier, calling the proposal “the most disgraceful act of heritage vandalism of our generation.”
“The revised design fails to resolve — or even address — the underlying flaw that impaired all of the previous attempts. The angular, blocky massing and style of the proposed addition remains intrinsically incompatible with the romantic sensibility of the histor -
Health Canada recalls thousands of Sens onesies for choking risk
Parents who bought a bright red Ottawa Senators onesie for their babies last fall are being urged to return the garment as it has been deemed a choking risk.
The metal snaps that close the onesie could be a choking hazard if they fall off, said a Health Canada release on Monday, and the manufacturer has issued a recall.
So far, there has been one report of a snap that fell off, and no reported injuries. About 5,100 of the onesies were sold. They are red, with a Sens logo on the front and the Can -

Early June brings the rain that May didn't
Yes, we’re getting plenty of rain. No, it won’t bring back the flood watches.
Besides, the second half of the week has a forecast of sunshine again, and we’ve been spoiled in recent weeks by unusually warm, dry weather.
In this flip-flop spring, we had a frigid April but have just finished the 18th-warmest May since records began, back in the 1870s.
May was dry as well as warm, though there was nothing record-setting about it. We ended the month with 52.2 millimetres of rain, c -

Police release new pic, appeal for help finding homicide suspect
Ottawa police issued a new appeal Monday in the week-long hunt for a suspect in a shooting that left a Greenboro father of two dead and a woman hurt.
“We are asking for your help,” the force tweeted Monday, including a new picture of Tristan Campbell, 34.
A Canada-wide warrant was obtained for Campbell’s arrest after Abdifatah Osman, 31, was gunned down on Patola Private May 27. A 23 year old also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

First 2 Australian fighter jets to be in Canada next year but no word yet on final cost
Procurement minister Carla Qualtrough said at the CANSEC military equipment trade show last week that she expects the first two used Australian F-18s to be delivered in 2019.
But she told journalists that she still doesn’t have a final cost for taxpayers for the deal of the 18 used aircraft, spares, weapons and other related equipment. The Liberal government has set aside up to $500 million for the purchase.
Qualtrough said negotiations are still ongoing so she won’t have a final tal -

Chem Norma finally freed from seaway
The tanker Chem Norma was finally pulled free Sunday afternoon from the edge of the St. Lawrence Seaway and was being inspected to make sure it could safely make its way to Sarnia with a cargo of refined petroleum.
The 145-metre vessel ran aground early Tuesday after having trouble with its rudder.
The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. said Sunday that the Chem Norma came to rest against the edge of a designated anchorage area so other traffic wasn’t affected and no pollution was s -

Philippine President hopes to replace Canadian helicopters with South Korean aircraft
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is in South Korea where he is looking to cut a deal on the purchase of new helicopters to replace those Canadian-built aircraft he rejected earlier this year.
The Liberal government ordered a review of the original contract involving Bell Helicopter Canada after human rights concerns were raised in February about aircraft it was selling to the Philippine military being used on the front lines of the country’s various conflicts.
But that review angered D -
