Kanata-Carleton PC candidate an Islamophobe the Tories should ditch, Liberals allege
Kanata-Carleton Progressive Conservative candidate Merrilee Fullerton is an Islamophobe who ought to be dumped from the Tory roster, the Ontario Liberals alleged Wednesday, citing online statements from 2015 criticizing face-coverings some Muslim women wear.
“Fullerton does not meet the standard to be a candidate for a mainstream political party,” the Liberals said in a news release. “Her Islamophobic comments are unacceptable.”

Ottawa police moving its autism registry to MedicAlert
A decade after establishing a registry for people with autism, Ottawa police are planning to hand off the job to MedicAlert.
The voluntary registry is available to officers who might be called to respond to someone with autism, whose behaviour, be it violent or just unusual, can frequently result in a police encounter. The registry gives officers information on the person’s background, likes and dislikes, unusual behaviour as well as suggestions for the best way to calm him or her.

Cornwall looks to corral a burgeoning catastrophe
CORNWALL — Herding cats might be easier than getting a proposed cat control bylaw accepted by at least one city councillor.
But with this city alone accounting for 30 per cent of all strays in the province taken in by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, something has to be done, says Coun. Bernadette Clement.
“This issue keeps coming back, so clearly the community and the OSPCA wants us to deal with this,” he says.
And so city staff have com -

Looking for a royal wedding-watching party in Ottawa? Time is running out
“Never wear your fascinator in public before breakfast,” my grandmother often warned. “It makes you look tawdry, like some early-morning walk of shame after a late night of drinking.”
This Saturday, however, may prove the exception to granny’s rule, as Ottawa’s royal family-watchers, monarchists and curiosity-seekers will arise — many well before the same sun that once upon a time never set on the British Empire — and tune in to the happy union of -

Reevely: Doug Ford's pledge to cut gas taxes the latest in Ontario's climate-change omnishambles
If Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives are elected in June, they’ll cut Ontario’s gas taxes 10 cents a litre, he promised Wednesday, because prices don’t matter, the whole discipline of economics is bull and climate change isn’t real.
They appear to have most people on their side. An Ipsos poll for Global News released this week found that 72 per cent of Ontarians think carbon taxes are just a cash grab and 68 per cent think the effects are just symbolic.

New roommate charged in 23-year-old Gatineau man's April killing
A 28-year-old man now accused of second-degree murder was the new roommate of victim Joey Morin, whose body likely lay undiscovered for days after he died.
Gatineau police revealed Wednesday that Kamy Lafrenière is charged with committing the crime “on or about April 13” and was scheduled to appear in court in Rouyn-Noranda Wednesday afternoon.

Glavin: A moral dilemma on the Israel-Gaza border
At least 60 Palestinians were killed. Another 2,700 were reportedly injured. Among the dead: a double amputee throwing stones from a wheelchair, a 14-year-old girl – her mother said she had longed for martyrdom – and an eight-month-old infant, dead from inhaling tear gas.
Among the wounded was a Canadian doctor, Tarek Loubani, shot in the legs.
What happened on Monday is as appalling and and as horrible as Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland’s office says it was: “ -

Assault charges dropped against Carleton Place councillor
Assault charges against a Carleton Place councillor have been withdrawn after a judicial pre-trial in a Perth provincial court on Tuesday.

Stash of allegedly stolen election signs turns up in Constance Bay
“It takes a million guts to put your name on a sign but none to steal one.”
Nepean Progressive Conservative incumbent Lisa MacLeod’s quip was perhaps the pithiest response to the discovery of a stash of stolen law signs that turned up in Constance Bay ahead of the June 7 provincial election.

Transit commission approves $14-million budget increase due to LRT delay
The transit commission has approved a $14-million increase to OC Transpo’s 2018 operating expenses due to the delayed opening of the Confederation LRT Line, but the transit agency says the extra funds can be covered by savings in the LRT contract.
According to Transpo, $10.8 million in extra costs for running bus detours until the end of November — an amount plugged into the capital budget — will be offset by the “payments made by RTG under the project agreement.”

OPP reins in owner, 70, after horses run wild in township
After weeks and months of “numerous” complaints about horses running loose in Tyendinaga Township, police said they’ve charged the owner of the horses with mischief but were still warning motorists to watch for errant equines.

Callers were also concerned about the animals’ health and welfare.

Denley: No Ontario party has credible spending plans
Voter alert: All three major political parties are trying to sell us a vision of the future that is so disconnected from the province’s scary fiscal situation that it would be laughable if we weren’t the ones facing the consequences.
Detailed, authoritative analyses from Ontario’s two leading public spending experts, the auditor general and the financial accountability office, show that Ontario is on the brink of sinking into a quagmire of debt and overspending that will lead i -
House Works: Your questions on composite decks, the best roofing, drywall cracks
Composite deck materials
Q: Is composite deck lumber really better than wood? I know that keeping a wood deck looking good involves a lot of work, but I’ve heard about problems with composite materials, too. Besides, I hear composites can be much more expensive than wood.
Composite deck lumber like these Trex boards is a blend of reclaimed plastic and recycled wood fibers. There’s no need for finishing composites. Just keep them clean.
A: I’ve lived with a wooden deck and compo -

Cornwall councillors cool to early version of proposed cat control bylaw
Cornwall city councillors have voiced some early misgivings about some of the policies proposed for the new cat control bylaw the city is working on.
Ideas such as having all pet cats kept inside and only allowed outside when on a leash or tether, as well a proposed rule that would turn anyone who feeds feral cats into their legal owner were greeted with hesitance.
“My neighbour feeds some feral cats, but they are not his responsibility, and I don’t think its right that he would be r -
Stash of allegedly stolen election signs turn up in Constance Bay
“It takes a million guts to put your name on a sign but none to steal one.”
Nepean Progressive Conservative incumbent Lisa MacLeod’s quip was perhaps the pithiest response to the discovery of a stash of stolen law signs that turned up in Constance Bay ahead of the June 7 provincial election.
Jack MacLaren, the Trillium Party of Ontario candidate in Kanata-Carleton, tweeted his thanks Tuesday to a friend who MacLaren said had found the pilfered signs on Whistler Road. There were -
Ottawa police moving its autism registry to Medic Alert
A decade after establishing a registry for people with autism, Ottawa police are planning to hand off the job to Medic Alert.

'Meet Kiara': Stittsville mom 'goes public' about daughter's special needs
When police brought home her daughter, Kiara, after they found her perched barefoot on the railing of a small bridge on Hazeldean Road, Stittsville’s Shannon Whitney took an extraordinary step.
She went public, “outing” Kiara (with Kiara’s permission) to the Stittsville Neighbours Facebook page.
“I’d like to introduce you to my daughter, Kiara,” Whitney wrote in the post last month. “Kiara is a loving, caring, content teenager who strongly val -

Mah: Why you shouldn’t assume I speak Chinese
As an Asian-looking woman, Alison Mah experiences implicit racism on a frequent basis: in the grocery store, in cabs, when meeting new people. In this personal and illuminating video essay, Mah explains the uniquely bizarre and ugly experience of being congratulated on your grasp of the English language — when it’s your native tongue. -

'I just stabbed Mike. Call 911,' roommate recalls in Mcrae murder trial
Alain Chaput was lying in bed watching a game show when his friend and roommate John Mcrae knocked on the bedroom door and told him he had just stabbed his own son.
“Call 911,” Chaput recalled Mcrae saying, as he testified Tuesday in Mcrae’s second-degree murder trial. “I just stabbed Mike.”
It was around 6:30 p.m. on July 7, 2015. Chaput and Mcrae, now 73, had been drinking at a neighbourhood pub before they returned to the apartment they shared with Mcrae’s -
