Police make arrest in Gatineau's second homicide of the year
Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for the murder of Joey Morin, a Gatineau man who was found dead in his home on April 21.
The man, who police say was a close friend of Morin’s, was arrested in Rouyn-Noranda, more than 500 kilometres away from Gatineau.
Morin, 23, was found dead in the basement of a home in the Lac-Beauchamp neighbourhood of Gatineau. While police had not previously released the cause of death, they said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that Morin was kille -
Husband charged in Mother's Day stabbing of wife, remains in hospital after daughter stabbed him
Ottawa police have charged a husband with stabbing his wife in a violent Mother’s Day outburst in Navan that ended after he was stabbed by the couple’s daughter.
Jeff Lambert, 58, remains in hospital but has been charged with six counts of aggravated assault and assault for the attack on his family.
Police responded to a 911 emergency call to Kentucky Lane in the city’s southeast end on Sunday after Lambert’s son reported that his sister had stabbed their father.

A peek at some of Canada's new pot shops: They look like any other boutique at the mall
The Ottawa company that plans to convert some Second Cup coffee stores into pot shops has provided a peek at what customers in western Canada can expect when they stroll in to buy their legal weed.
An artist rendering of the shops depicts a cool, uncluttered space decorated in white with magenta accents and splashes of hot pink. Meta Cannabis Supply Co. looks like any other boutique at the mall.
The store motto — “Life Uplifted” — is typical of the language bei -
Reevely: Local Liberals warm over decade-old tax tweaks as new pro-business policies
The Ontario Liberals will boost Ottawa’s already booming economy by, er, doing a bunch of things they’ve already done, a batch of Liberal candidates announced Tuesday.
Ottawa Centre incumbent Yasir Naqvi and fellow candidates John Fraser (Ottawa South), Stephanie Maghnam (Kanata-Carleton) and Nathalie Des Rosiers (Ottawa-Vanier) stood up with a microphone outside Invest Ottawa’s Bayview Yards headquarters and talked about this stuff in very serious voices, with very serious loo -

Recycling project coming soon to an Ottawa park near you
The constant sight of garbage cans overflowing with plastic bottles and pop cans at Mooney’s Bay prompted River Coun. Riley Brockington to demand something he says is long overdue — recycling bins in city parks.
“There’s no excuse in 2018 to not have recycling,” he said after Tuesday’s environment and climate protection committee meeting.
Although Brockington questioned why garbage cans are more prevalent than blue bins at most parks, he also acknowledged a pi -
Almost half of 48 motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2017 were not at fault: OPP
The OPP says it’s raising “red flags” about last year’s death toll as motorcycles and off-road vehicles get into gear for the Victoria Day weekend.
Ahead of a series of weekend safety initiatives, they’re warning all Ontario road users about what was a “historically tragic motorcycle season” in 2017, with the 48 deaths marking a 10-year high.
Almost half of the victims were not the at-fault driver.
“Over and above marking a 10-year high, what -

Today's letters: Trudeau's apology, filthy canal and the fire chief
Trudeau right to apologize for St. LouisRe: Sorry state of affairs, May 10
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is absolutely right in apologizing for Canada’s refusal to accept the refugees aboard the St. Louis in 1939, and to often repeat such an apology into the future if he chooses.
The blame for that terrible tragedy is on the prime minister of the time, William Lyon Mackenzie King. He could have refused to take the advice of one immigration official and given those desperate people safety i -

Cohen: The consequences of the American embassy move
WASHINGTON – The split-screen images from Gaza and Jerusalem on Monday were surely painted by Salvador Dali. Only a classic surrealist could render this portrait of absurdity.
In Gaza, the first of two days of mass protests set to culminate Tuesday, 58 were killed and hundreds injured. Protesters hurled rocks, burned car tires and sent flaming kites aloft.
When they charged the fence, the Israelis soldiers fired tear gas, then bullets. It was the worst violence in Gaza since the war in 201 -

'Suspicious' blaze engulfs abandoned Saab in Arnprior: OPP
Police are seeking witnesses after a black Saab was found engulfed in flames in Arnprior early Tuesday morning.
The car was a 2006 model, the OPP said, using the past tense because it was “completely destroyed” in an incident they’re treating as suspicious.
Town firefighters and OPP officers were called to the intersection of Riverview Road and Leo Lavoie Lane at 1:25 a.m.
Const. Dallas MacLeod is investigating.

Moneo: This summer, treat wild animals with respect, please
When will we stop turning wildlife sightings into Disney moments where we treat an animal like a plaything, or pull out smartphone cameras, eager to get a YouTube-worthy video that just might go viral?
Earlier this month, on a Victoria-area beach, a moulting elephant seal was harassed by a variety of creatures. Humans, who came by busloads, threw watermelon and bread atthe fasting animal. Some dumped water on her. And others let their dogs run up to torment the seal.

Fundraiser for Vice Admiral Mark Norman collects almost $122,000 so far
Lawyers for Vice Admiral Mark Norman are back in court today.

As Mark Norman returns to court, potential trial could come in the middle of election year for Liberals
The RCMP charged Norman in March with one count of breach of trust in relation to the alleged leak of information in the fall of 2015 about the then newly-elected Liberal government’s plan to derail the supply ship project. Fraudsters 'spoof' RCMP's phone number in tax scam
The RCMP isn’t making calls claiming taxpayers owe big and will be under arrest if they don’t pay up via money transfer, the force is warning.
It’s a scam and the calls, in which fraudsters impersonate police officers, are using caller ID spoofing to make it look like they coming from the Mounties/
The callers tell their marks that there is a large amount of money owing on their personal taxes and that an arrest warrant has been issued in their name. The only way to m -

Showers are on tap for Tuesday but the sun is back for Wednesday, bringing a string of beautiful days.
Fingers crossed, but they’re only forecast to last just until the Victoria Day long weekend.
For Tuesday, Environment Canada predicts increasing cloudiness, showers beginning in the early morning and ending in the afternoon, northwest winds at 20 km/h and a high of 20 C. Skies clear overnight as the temperature drops to 5 C.
Wednesday’s outlook is for sunshine, a high of 23 C a -
Week-long traffic blitz aims to 'take the D's out of driving'
Drunk, drugged, drowsy, distracted, dangerously and detached.
They’re the dirty half-dozen that city police aim to get off the road during Canada Road Safety Week, which runs from Tuesday through Victoria Day Monday.
“This years’ theme will focus on taking the D’s out of driving,” Staff Sgt. François D’Aoust said Tuesday morning via Twitter.
And “after 6 collisions with injuries in 2 days, two of them serious enough to have @OP -

Police chief stresses need for community role in battle against gun violence
The police chief didn’t mince words on Monday night as he addressed about 100 residents who fear rising gun violence in the city’s south end.
“Too many young men are being killed by this (gang) life. They either end up in jail or dead,” Chief Charles Bordeleau told the crowd at the Jim Durrell arena on Walkley Road.
The young drug criminals behind this year’s 37 shootings so far — five of them fatal — weren’t at the meeting, but the residents -

Henry Larsen Elementary band, fresh from Comiccon appearance, gears up for nationals
By Kieran Delamont
The prospect of a long trip with 40 or so kids adept at making loud noises with wind instruments might be a little stressful.
But Rob Pretty, the conductor of the Henry Larsen Elementary School concert band, seemed fairly composed on Monday afternoon, the day before his band was set to travel to Toronto to participate in MusicFest 2018. (Or “nationals,” as it’s known.)The band earned its spot by recently winning gold at a regional festival in Ottawa, and has -
Palestinian supporters demonstrate at U.S. embassy in Ottawa as protests erupt in Gaza
As the U.S. officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Monday, tensions rose along the Gaza Strip, spurring protests in Ottawa and around the world.
Palestinian supporters gathered on the steps of the U.S. Embassy on Sussex Drive to send a message to U.S. President Donald Trump — and to other leaders around the world — that the decision to allow the Americans to move their embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem contravenes international law.
For Israelis, it marked the f -
