During her time with the board, Ablett sat in leadership roles on almost every committee including Honours and Awards, Child Care Corporation, and the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority.
She became known as a tireless worker that gave everything she had to support her community.
Ablett died on Saturday. The cause of her death was -
Reevely: Liberals' attack on NDP platform 'error' a graze, not a direct hit
The New Democrats screwed up big with their pre-election platform, top Liberals alleged Monday, by cutting billions of dollars in spending the Liberals planned.
Mostly this is about how the New Democrats would govern differently from the Liberals, not a catastrophic failure of competence.
Kathleen Wynne, Charles Sousa and Eleanor McMahon — the Liberal premier, finance minister and treasury-board president, the boss and her money ministers — assembled at a trades school Monday morning -

Man charged after warning about fake Uber driver
A man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault after police circulated a photo of a suspected fake Uber driver.
Ottawa police warned on the weekend that a man appeared to be posing as an Uber driver, and that he was trying to pick up intoxicated women in the ByWard Market.
Police said one woman reported that she was allegedly sexually assaulted as the man was driving. The suspect, still posing as an Uber driver, then told her to go to a nearby ATM to pay for the ride in cash, poli -

Art of the Brick brings ornate Lego sculptures to Ottawa
Nathan Sawaya starts with a single brick, and ends with tens of thousands of little coloured plastic pieces that combine and bring to life Roman sculpture, a flowing red dress, a man trying to escape clutching hands, or a castle popping up from a storybook.
Sawaya makes art from Lego bricks.
His exhibit, The Art of the Brick, opens Wednesday and runs until Labour Day at the Canada Science and Technology Museum.

Sadrehashemi: Four myths about Canada's border crossings
Michelle Rempel, Conservative immigration critic, tweeted recently that the media was finally writing about “illegal border crossings” after she had been raising it for a year. The problem is that several recurring myths are shaping much of the coverage. Here are four of them:
The first myth is that Canada could designate the entire border as a port of entry. This is not a viable option. The public safety minister cannot legally designate the entire border as a “port of entry.& -

Mathias: A message to the next government on jail reform
The recent passage of the new Correctional Services and Reintegration Act 2018 in the Ontario legislature was very good news. But it arrived on the heels of a resurgence of media coverage, controversy and concerns about the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, and news of an inmate’s brutal beating death.
Should we be throwing up our hands in despair or celebration?
Huge steps have been taken in the right direction, but ample evidence says there is another side to this problem, which is still -

Gorgeous week ahead but there's rain on the horizon
Do you feel like you didn’t maximize your outdoor time this weekend?
Don’t worry: It’s going to be absolutely gorgeous this week.
Today’s high should hit 23 C with copious amounts of sun.
So much sun, in fact, that the UV index is at 7 (high) so make sure to lather up with sunscreen.
Tonight’s low will drop to 13 C.
Tomorrow will still be warm with a high near 20 C but Environment Canada is calling for substantially more cloud coverage.

Ottawa airport looking at driverless shuttle service
The Ottawa International Airport could become the first location in Canada with a driverless shuttle service for public use.
The airport authority and others are looking at introducing an autonomous shuttle to ferry people from external parking lots to the terminal on a regular route, a proposal that’s still in its early stages.
“We are interested in participating in it,” said airport spokeswoman Krista Kealey. “It is premature to say if and when, but it is something that -
'Violated and horrified': patient complaint about camera sparked investigation into doctor now facing 94 charges of voyeurism and sexual assault
At first she was tearful, then she was horrified.
The young woman had just discovered a cellphone that was recording her as she took her clothes off in an Ottawa doctor’s examining room.
Confronted, the doctor insisted that the video was for “training purposes” and deleted it in front of her.
Incredulous, she refused to back down, demanding an immediate response from senior administrators with University of Ottawa Health Services, which runs the Rideau Street clinic.

Today's letters: Ignoring our heritage, punishing cyclists
We ignore our heritage at home
Recently, and although the Built Heritage Committee had denied it, Ottawa Council agreed to allow the current owners (Ugandan Embassy) of 231 Cobourg St., the former residence of prime minister Lester Pearson, to be demolished and replaced.
Once again, Canadians have displayed ignorance and disregard for buildings of value to our sense of our history. In this case, we have erected a plaque at the graceful farmhouse at the corner of Augusta and Daly Streets, w -
Mottiar: Ontarians need better access to palliative care
Last week was National Hospice Palliative Care week. In palliative care, we focus on improving a person’s quality of life by alleviating symptoms such as pain, breathlessness and anxiety. In distinction to many other areas of medicine, we know that almost all of us will eventually benefit from good palliative care at the end of our lives. We also know that our population is aging and that over time the number of people requiring palliative care has and will continue to increase.
