A 17-year-old girl was in critical condition with a head injury following a T-bone collision at the intersection of Kinburn Side Road and John Shaw Road on Saturday afternoon.
Ottawa paramedics treated three patients for traumatic injuries. A 51-year-old man was in serious condition with chest injuries while a 21-year-old man had a serious head injury.

Egan: They come home from Florida to find hills are alive in backyard
In April, Lorraine and Larry St. Denis returned from wintering in Florida to find something new in the backyard — a grey mountain range where creeks and trees once stood.
“It was a shocker,” said Lorraine, 71.
Turns out, indeed, the earth moved, tons and tons of it, into a U-shaped pile about 10 metres high and in excess of 100 metres long. When they left for the south in November, the pile was as high as a snowbank — when they returned, it was as high as a house.

Rooftop fire quickly extinguished in Nepean industrial area
Ottawa firefighters made quick work of a rooftop fire at a Nepean concrete manufacturer’s building Saturday.
Firefighters got a 911 call from Central Precast on 25 Bonguard Ave. at 10:48 a.m. It took less than 15 minutes to control the fire, which was in a rooftop compressor unit and was sending thick black smoke into the air.
There were no injuries.
Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Silver lining: Craftsman Laurent Amiot celebrated in new exhibition at National Gallery
In 1778, Laurent Amiot, the ninth of 10 children born to Quebec City caterer and innkeeper Jean Amiot and his wife Marie-Louise Chrestien, turned 14 — which meant that he was old enough to apprentice in the art form that this week, 240 years later, has earned him a new and comprehensive exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
Entering his teen years, Amiot began his training as a silversmith. He showed so much promise that, when he was 18, he became the first Canadian-born silversmit -

Dawson: Honk if you love silence
A civilized and peaceful society requires some ground rules beyond just laws – unwritten codes of conduct that make the day hum along smoothly and, as with the pirate’s code, are really more guidelines than rules, justifiably broken on occasion.
But they should be adhered to in most instances, in order to be a good citizen, neighbour and all-around nice human being.
As an example: One doesn’t put a backpack on a bus seat. One tries to hold the door for the person behind. One wa -

Cappies reivew: Merivale High School presents Disenchanted!
Show #20: Disenchanted!
Where: Merivale High School
Director: Cynthia Wood
Jagnoor Saran, Lead CriticElmwood School
It can be difficult to poke holes at an icon – especially one as revered as Walt Disney – but in order to tell the truth it is sometimes necessary. In their rendition of Disenchanted! Merivale High School proved that there are always two sides to every story.
Written by Dennis T. Giacino, this cabaret-style musical unconventionally follows our favourite Disney princess. -
Egan: 'My house stinks' — new owner tries to clear air on smelly septic system
In December 2015, Janet St-Pierre, a yoga instructor, bought a century-old brick house in the hamlet of Dunbar, about 70 kilometres south of Ottawa, and dreamed tranquil possibilities.
On a half-acre beside a converted church, the lovely old place had just been renovated: new walls and floors, updated kitchen and bath, big wraparound deck overlooking a yard and fertile farm field. Then came the spring of 2016 and a ripe awakening.
The old manse, where a minister once lived, stank to high he -

This just in: Sunny skies all weekend, tulips happy
There will be chilly mornings to start the next few days, but other than that, the news is all good.
Short and sweet, Environment Canada is predicting sunny skies through Tuesday.
Saturday’s high should be 18 C with highs of 21, 25 and 26 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The low on Saturday night is predicted to be 2 C with a chance of frost.
It’s a great weekend to get out and take in the tulip festival, or just enjoy the spring after a punishing winter.

Will protective shields for Transpo drivers improve driver safety?
Citing a spike in both verbal and physical assaults against its bus drivers over the past year, the union representing OC Transpo drivers is applauding a pilot project that will equip a number of city buses with protective barriers for its operators.
Clint Crabtree, president of ATU Local 279, said the union has been pushing for protective barriers for more than 10 years, and has since been monitoring policies in other major urban centres.
The transit authority at that time explored the idea of -
Today's letters: Volunteerism, the Ontario election, and bilingualism
Charging a fee will deter volunteers
Re: Ottawa police consider making volunteers pay for background checks, May 7.
Volunteering is at the heart of caring and thriving communities. Every day, volunteers in Ottawa improve the wellbeing of our community by supporting the successful operation of shelters, service organizations and food banks. They help children participate in sports and musical activities; seniors deal with social isolation; and, new Canadians learn a second language. For non-profi -
