The Town of Renfrew is sticking to its guns and forcing its 61-year-old fire chief to retire against his will, saying he’s too old to take command at a fire scene.
Regular firefighters have to retire by age 60 in Ontario, as the law considers that they may not have the required stamina as they get older.
But outgoing chief Guy Longtin, a 26-year veteran as Renfrew’s chief, says that rule doesn’t apply to chiefs, whose role is administrative.
Yes it does, says the town.

A good death: Artist lived under shadow of HIV/AIDS for three decades
As he prepared to die, Richard Darch walked onto his third-floor balcony for a final cigarette.
It was just after 6 p.m., and, as was his habit, Darch closed the sliding door to prevent smoke from wafting into his apartment.
Inside, a doctor, nurse and anesthesiologist were readying to end his remarkable, difficult life.
At 67, Darch had come of age in a perilous era for gay men and had lived with HIV for more than three decades. He had defeated colorectal cancer. He had survived at least three -

Stabbing victim died from massive blood loss, pathologist tells court
Michael Mcrae died from massive blood loss that resulted from two deep stab wounds to his abdomen — and not the “superficial” cut to his neck, a court heard Friday.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Alfredo Walker testified that Mcrae’s liver, small intestines and renal vein were all damaged by the path of the knife.
The weapon penetrated about 20 centimetres inside his body and left a small cut on the back of his chest wall, Dr. Walker told court.

Reevely: In northern-issues debate, Ford turns his sights on NDP's Horwath
Andrea Horwath is a two-faced environmentalist nutbar, Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford charged Friday, abruptly changing the direction of his campaign to lead Ontario.
Until now, Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne and her party’s record have been Ford’s target, with Horwath an afterthought. But with polls suggesting Horwath might be the more serious threat to Ford’s ambition, he’s taken fresh aim at her and the New Democrats.

Editorial: Ontario's election – remember, all politics is local
Ontario’s election campaign is about more than who has the best slogan or is the most skilled debater. It’s about more than change or personality. It’s about the power individual voters have. We can use our ballots better than we sometimes have.
Each of us needs to identify what we think the priorities are – in Ottawa as well as provincially – and demand specifics from local candidates. Then, we must figure out which local candidate, moreso than which party,&nb -

Tiny homes a big problem for city living
Every night, Christine McIntosh goes to sleep under the stars.
The glowing night sky is visible through the windows in her cozy upstairs loft – one that only stretches four feet in height. In fact, her entire home is only 12 feet tall.
McIntosh lives in a tiny house just outside of Ottawa. It’s only 200 square feet and, while some may find it hard to believe, includes a fully-equipped kitchen, living area, bathroom and bedroom.

An unexpected surge in new jobs in April pushed the capital region’s jobless rate down to 4.4 per cent, a level not seen in more than 30 years. This was down sharply from 4.8 per cent in March, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

Gormley: The messy world of suicide tourism
If any political issue is more morally fraught than legalizing doctor-assisted suicide, it is travelling in search of legalized doctor-assisted suicide. That a 104-year-old Australian took his life last week, some consider troubling; that he did so not in his home country but in another, many consider most troubling of all.
Going to Mexico to purchase a drug from pet shops that is normally meant to euthanize cats, or to Switzerland to carry out a suicide pact in a rented apartment with the help -

Renovation transformation: Amsted Design co-owners complete project close to home and hearts
When his son was three months old, Kirk Haw knew he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. For the first few years, carrying his son up and down the stairs of their two-storey house was an easy task, but one that grew more difficult with time.
When Haw’s son was about eight years old, it was clear something had to change. The family home had to be made accessible.
His son has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects body movement and muscle coordination.

Capital region jobless rate plummets to 4.4% in April
The national capital region’s jobless rate plummeted in April to 4.4 per cent from 4.8 per cent in March, courtesy of 8,000 net new jobs while the labour force increased just 4,500.
It was the lowest unemployment rate since before 2001.
The dramatic drop in April’s jobless rate in the capital region took place entirely on the Ottawa side where the unemployment rate fell to 4.2 per cent from 4.9 per cent in March.
In Gatineau, the jobless rate edged up to 4.8 per cent from 4.7 per cen -

Chernobyl's nuclear disaster site is generating power again. Here's how
Even more than 30 years after a devastating nuclear accident, Chernobyl is still one of the most radioactive places on Earth.
A large swath of land won’t be habitable for an astonishing 24,000 years.
That, however, isn’t stopping thousands of homes from getting power from the site.

Scientists discover hidden Mayan megacity – home to an estimated 10 million people
A massive city hidden in plain sight?
Researchers using advanced scanning techniques believe that they have discovered a secret Mayan megacity.
Some estimates put the population of the city, buried in the Guatemalan jungle for 1,200 years, near 10 million people.
That’s more populous than many modern cities including New York, London and Bangkok.

Friday's cool (not in a good way), but expect a sunny 19 C for Mom by Sunday
Ottawa awoke to a mere 1 C Friday and the high is just 13 C but we’ll fête moms everywhere with sunshine and seasonal temperatures by Sunday and hit the 20s by next week.
Friday’s forecast is for mainly sunny skies with increasing cloudiness overnight and a low of 2 C with the risk of frost.
Saturday starts out mainly cloudy but starts clearing in the afternoon with a high of 16 C and a low of 3 C.
The Mother’s Day forecast is sunshine and 19 C — which is spot on se -
Charges against Ottawa doctor reignite questions over patient protections
Charges against a local doctor accused of voyeurism and sexual assault involving more than 50 people over three decades have reignited questions about the policies and legislation that are meant to protect patients.
Meanwhile, the medical clinic where Dr. Vincent Nadon worked has put up posters in all of its examination rooms advising patients that they can have another person present during a medical exam.
Nadon, 56, a physician with the University of Ottawa Health Services (UOHS) wa -
Menard: Ottawa's public school board needs renewal
When I started as a school board trustee three-and-a-half years ago, I had much hope and optimism. My view of the potential of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board hasn’t changed, but my cynicism about how decisions are made has grown.
It may sound strange for a sitting trustee to call for renewal at the board, but it is needed, and change will only be ushered in by identifying problems truthfully and seeking solutions.
The OCDSB does some things very well, including its wide spectrum -
MacDougall: Tories missing chance to play hero — for the environment and taxpayers
Hey, have you heard the latest from the Conservatives about Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax?
I’m kidding. Of course you have. By this point, anyone could parrot the Tory talking points. (To save you a Google: They’re against it.)
Not a day goes by without a jeremiad against Trudeau’s l-o-v-e of carbon taxation. This week, to give the usual the feel of the exotic, the conservative cause loosed its most effective communicator, Jason Kenney, on the federal committee studyin -
Cruel and unusual? Perth court case to challenge validity of Ontario SPCA
Ontario’s animal protection laws are outdated, unconstitutional and violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
That’s the argument being put forward by a pair of “strange bedfellows” who are teaming up on a legal challenge that questions the oversight of, and the powers currently held by, this province’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
More specifically, Jeffrey Bogaerts of the Ontario Landowners Association is alleging the law that gives the OSPC -

Founders of G7 nations get no respect
Re: Did Global Affairs Shrug off History? May 7.
Andrew Duffy quotes Sen. Serge Joyal with respect to razing the Glasgow rowhouse where Sir John A. Macdonald may have been born: “We are probably the only country among the G7 that treats their founders this way.”
In fact, Canada is remarkably good company among the G7 countries, if we look at the fates of the birth places of those who may be considered their founders.
