Tulip festival starts this weekend: Here's what to look forward to
The 66th annual Tulip Festival will be in full bloom this weekend. Close to one million tulips of 100 varieties will brighten flower beds around Ottawa and Gatineau.
This year, expect to see plenty of light, creamy yellow. The May 11-21 festival will showcase the “World Friendship” tulip, developed by Marcel Lenard from France in 1988. As the name suggests, its colour symbolizes friendship, and 30,000 of them will be on display throughout the festival’s 30 locations. -
Bagnall: Behind Minto's hunt for cash and potential IPO
Perhaps it’s just a rumour, but it’s one that describes perfectly the journey undertaken lately by Ottawa real estate titan Minto Group.
Bloomberg News reported Thursday that Minto is contemplating selling $200 million worth of shares through a new listing on the TSX. Citing unnamed sources, the story added that documents to support this initial public offering would be filed “in the coming weeks.” The final price would depend on which of Minto’s real estate assets -

Hate crime charge hangs over Ottawa Centre candidate
Twenty-five names and you’re in. Oh, and you can’t work for the government.
Aside from that, there’s not much stopping anyone from running for a seat of Queen’s Park, even if you’ve been convicted of sexual assault, been stripped of your medical licence and have an upcoming trial for hate crimes.
All those apply to James Sears, candidate in Ottawa Centre who bills himself as “Canada’s biggest troll.”
Sears, 54, is editor of the Toronto newsletter Y -

Quebec cottage country not out of the woods with forest fires, officials say
After a forest fire in Val-Des-Monts spread to four cottages Wednesday night, Quebec officials are advising that the upcoming rainy weather doesn’t mean cottage country is in the clear.
According to the website of La Société de protection des forêts contre le feu, the threat of fires is low Thursday and Friday during the rain but will rise over the weekend.
On the website’s map, most areas of the province on Thursday were at the “blue” level, meaning i -

Explainer: How a bill becomes law in Ontario
It’s time for a pop quiz straight out of civics class.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford dodged a question from a reporter.
“I don’t mean to be impertinent,” said the reporter from the online news site QP Briefing, “but I was hoping you could explain to the people of Ontario how a bill becomes law, just step-by-step.”
“Well my friend,” replied Ford, “we can run through that, and I know this -

Plant paintings bloom at Museum of Nature in new exhibit
There was Jan Salmon, an experienced artist, worrying for the first time in her life how scientists would judge the accuracy of her watercolour maple leaf.
“It was really scary,” she said Thursday. “I thought: oh my goodness, have I really represented it accurately? And right to the very end I wasn’t sure.”
And there was Jennifer Doubt, curator of botany at the Canadian Museum of Nature, judging art.

Adam: Conference aims to develop city-building ideas
Modern cities have become the engines of growth that are powering economic development and improving the quality of life of millions around the world. But the same cities are facing challenges that experts say require a re-think of the growth models that defined the urban form for more than half a century.

Firefighters 'rewarded with hugs' after freeing tyke's finger
Firefighters were called in to free a six-year-old’s finger Thursday morning after the tyke slipped on a washer that no amount of parental effort (and soap, one bets) could budge.
“Kids put their fingers in the darndest places,” the fire department noted.
Fire crews and paramedics got the call at 7:40 a.m. The washer was below the child’s knuckle and firmly stuck there by swelling. Firefighters carefully used side cutters and other specialized tools to remove t -

Determined March for Life flagbearers back at City Hall
There was no flap this year but the March for Life flag did indeed return to Ottawa City Hall this morning.
Joined by a dozen others, well-known abortion opponent Francis Barrett, 89, was walking up and down Laurier Avenue on the edge of city hall for about an hour, beginning at 7:15 a.m.
He waved the grey flag on a wooden pole, drew honks from passing drivers and spoke to a pair of reporters on hand in case a confrontation developed.
A year ago, Barrett caused a sensation when — with -
